Back in the day, Montreal had upwards of 12 Junior teams they owned across Canada. The other 5 teams in the original 6 didn’t invest nearly as much and may have had one or two affiliate teams each. This gave Montreal a huge advantage especially in Quebec where they had the market cornered for French kids.

The rules changed in ‘64 and an entry draft system was installed. Players that had been affiliated with Montreal were now eligible to be drafted by the other 5 teams. To appease Montreal, who had sponsored and developed these players, an agreement was made that allowed the Habs to have the top two picks from Quebec. The last year for this was 1969 when Montreal drafted Rejean Houle and Marc Tardiff. Had this system stayed in place one more year, they would have had the services of Gilbert Perreault.

Really, I’ve never been a big fan of Montreal, but I can’t say I’m taking much pleasure in their disarray. Half the teams in each conference make the playoffs. Some years you just don’t get enough points. Eh, whatever.

Anyway, I’m relieved Horton is back on the ice. I look forward to him being back in the lineup.
