I think that makes a lot of sense. If that helmet beats the standard by 50% like it claims, then they should be asking players to make the change.

Of course, when players were being forced to wear helmets for the first time, there were hockey people criticizing the change, because it was taking away a player’s right to choose to wear a helmet or not. And when they’re talking about making visors mandatory, or making players wear helmets in warm-up, you’re seeing resistance from players. Probably another thing they won’t make changes on, just wait for things to slowly change.

There is the Messier helmet that is far more advanced that the buckets alot of the players wear. It’s a bit bigger and looks slightly different and has not seen the popularity that it should. Alot of the high school teams in Minnesota are using the Messier helmet and I think for good reason. The technology in hockey helmets has never really changed much, with that being the exception. Look it up on line and see the benefits, it really makes sense. It should be mandatory if they really want to curb the head injuries.

I’ve been following the issue of concussions for some time, both in the NHL and the NFL. I’ve seen multiple stories about how helmet companies are designing football helmets specifically to prevent concussions, and that independent comparative studies are being done to compare which helmets work best to prevent concussions.

Are there any similar studies done on hockey helmets? You’d think with all this talk of player safety and concussion awareness, that someone has done a study showing that company X has the safest helmets. All I’ve seen is using CSA and HECC approved helmets, but nothing saying which helmets are the best to reduce concussions. You’d think with all of the kids who play amateur hockey that someone might think this was important. Anyone know?
