Flyers assistant coach calls Crosby and Malkin the “two dirtiest players” on the Penguins

Apr 3, 2012, 7:10 PM EDT

Craig Berube

Flyers assistant coach Craig Berube says head coach Peter Laviolette “had a right to be upset” Sunday afternoon when Pittsburgh’s Joe Vitale clobbered Danny Briere late in a game.

Laviolette, of course, exercised his right to be upset by smashing a hockey stick and screaming at the Penguins’ bench.

“The bottom line is that the game was over and they put their five toughest guys on the ice,” Berube said on CSN Philly’s Daily News Live.

And while Berube agreed that retaliation was to be expected after Philadelphia’s Brayden Schenn cross-checked Sidney Crosby, he also called Crosby and Evgeni Malkin “the two dirtiest players on their hockey team.”

“They slash, they punch guys in the face, they do all these little things,” said Berube. “I got no problem with what Schenn does, and if somebody runs [Crosby] over, that’s great, they should run him over. This guy gets away with too much in my opinion, whines to the refs all day and all night, it’s a joke.”

So anyway, these two teams kinda hate each other.

You can watch the full interview below.

    Well there’s a professional for ya…

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:03 PM

He’s just fanning the flames. The playoffs need to start ASAP, this series is going to be unreal.

    • gbiscottagecheesefatties - Apr 3, 2012 at 9:48 PM

all these two teams is cry over each other… I honestly hate both of them

      Wild fan

      • iluvwikileaks - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:26 AM

i don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say the Wild will NOT come close to winning a Stanley Cup in your lifetime:)

      • danoj14 - Apr 10, 2012 at 7:00 PM

@iluvwikileaks: Really? And you base that on what, exactly? A prospect system that is getting replenished, an owner that doesn’t mind spending money?

No chance in someone’s lifetime? You really are a moron…

    • jpelle82 - Apr 4, 2012 at 2:14 PM

kinda calling the kettle black huh? berube was a saint

      • freewillig - Apr 5, 2012 at 5:20 PM

@iluvwikileaks….I’ll take that bet, but since “close to winning a Cup” is pretty vague, I’m not exactly sure what I’m betting on. The Wild have a ton of great prospects in the pipeline. They’ll probably be mediocre next year, but they’re not that far away from being back to the playoffs. I would also bet Parise is with the Wild next year.

And since it seems to be a requirement to post your allegiances on your post, I’m a Senators fan.

  2. psufan220 - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:20 PM

And the Flyers continue to whine even when they win

    • spiffy53 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:54 PM

      easy sandusky, easy.

      • ironheadjr - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:39 PM

        second that!lol

  3. crosberries - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:22 PM

Wahhhhhhhh keep crying. Not surprised people from and associated with philthy cant act like professionals city needs to be blown off the map

    • warrenhottie - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:18 PM

Correct that-Philadelphia fans are the most passionate intelligent ones out there with the most superb consummate owner in the league that always makes sure they have the best of everything in order to be in the playoffs continuously. Where are you from by the way?

Crosby should play in his own league so he can whine, pout, throw a temper tantrum so he can take all his pucks & go home when he doesn’t get his way like a spoiled little brat who falls down if a feather touches him. I sincerely hope a concussion will end his career sooner rather than later

  4. nobandwagoners - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:22 PM

It’s good to see, finally, Malkin getting called out for some of his questionable, borderline dirty plays that he gets away with. I’m not in the East (nor am I a Philly fan) so I don’t get to watch the Pens play all the time but I’ve seen Malkin dish out some real borderline hits for which he doesn’t get called (the hit on Willie Mitchell into the end boards comes readily to mind). He is undeniably a huge talent and a big body but he does cross the line now and then, with seeming impunity. Another reason to want him on your team!

    • letangusespertplus - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:28 PM

      state your team.

      • ironheadjr - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:40 PM

        Your mom.

      • comeonnowguys - Apr 4, 2012 at 2:24 PM

        “I’m not in the East”

“he hit on Willie Mitchell into the end boards comes readily to mind”

        He’s a Canucklehead.

      • freewillig - Apr 5, 2012 at 5:05 PM

        @comeonnowguys…Mitchell plays for LA.

  5. bmscalise - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:31 PM

This whole thing has become genuinely funny. More drama coming out of Philly than a sorority house. The Pens have been minimalistic in their responses, but the Flyers… What do they hope to accomplish by this?

Regardless of which team you think is better or wins the series, the Flyers certainly aren’t going to get in the heads of the Pens with this silliness.

    • spiffy53 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:54 PM

what do they hope to accomplish? how about malkin and specifically crosby actually get calls against them in the playoffs. it’s called gaming the refs and ensuring the series is called as evenly as possible. nothing more and nothing less.

      • bmscalise - Apr 3, 2012 at 10:34 PM

No – Bylsma’s single comment after last game – that the Flyers were targeting guys after the whistle and the refs not calling it – was gaming the refs (a strategy Laviolette acknowledged by the way). That comment was it, then it was dropped.

The general hand-wringing coming out of Philly is just kind of pathetic.

      • danphipps01 - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:39 PM

Welcome to an average day in Philadelphia, man. Even when they win they have to weep about how poorly they’re treated by everyone.

Seriously, they’re the Brian Burke of franchises.

      • leelah96 - Apr 5, 2012 at 1:13 PM

because philly refs are always so… fair.

  6. GenoPringles - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Good Lord, is this entire city going to cry about the penguins? Maybe NBC should interview the zamboni drivers, see if they want to cry too. This is a clear cut case of soupcan/GenoPringles envy. Everyone wishes they had superpowers on their team. Sorry Filthy, but it’s not our fault you guys can’t put together a dynasty like franchise. Sid + Geno are coming time to hide your women, that means you too Brierre

    • ml3939 - Apr 4, 2012 at 1:12 AM

Every time you post something I am amazed you know how to access the internet. If I were to call your posts inane, stupid people every where would be highly insulted. The Pens have Crosby, Malkin and MAF because they were horrible 3 years in a row and got the first, second and first picks in consecutive drafts. How is that building a franchise when no doubt about it talent is sitting for you at the top of the draft? A blind person could have made those picks.

      • Kristenaux - Apr 5, 2012 at 5:23 PM

That may well be, but you have to know how to use that talent afterwards. Look around the league at other teams that got first choices….now show me where they are too.

    • hartsy19 - Apr 4, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Claude Giroux isnt a superpower? Take your blinders off bro, there’s a sickening consistency which actual HOCKEY fans, not just fans of one specific team can see; the NHL and the majority of broadcasters (primarily ESPN and NBC) favor the Pens and its disgusting. The commentary is so askew (to one side; out of line; in a crooked position; awry: to wear one’s hat askew; to hang a picture askew – figured you’d need the definition) in Nationally televised games that it’s painful to watch. Not that you’d be able to see it with your blindfold on.

      • ml3939 - Apr 4, 2012 at 2:34 PM

You should probably greatly reduce you posts. It has become clear that English is not the first language in Pittsburgh.

    • warrenhottie - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:25 PM

Does the Clarke-Parent Era, Lindros-Leclair ring any ding-dong bells in your head? I’d hate to be Crosby’s boyfriend I’d hear nothing but whining all the time

  7. letangusespertplus - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:32 PM

It’s Tuesday and Philly can’t keep Penguins names outta their mouths. Who is the whiner now filthadelphia? Everyone on your team?

    • drewzducks - Apr 4, 2012 at 1:49 AM

Hope Lepoontang recovers from that vicious high stick from Peverley tonight. PK Suckerban was even embarrassed by that cowardly act.

    • warrenhottie - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:27 PM

No it’s called telling the truth which Crosby & Malkin don’t know what that even is.

  8. phillyhatesyou - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:43 PM

pretty sure berube could probably still beat up half the penguins team. dude speaks the truth. pens fans just cant handle it.

    • napoleonblownapart6887 - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:56 PM

But what were his thoughts on the Rangers tonight? Clearly that’s where his attention should have been….

  9. themajorleagueblog - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:53 PM

Sure, Crosby has been known to slash after plays and get under players skin, then get defended by enforcers so they can continue doing that. YOU KNOW WHO THAT SOUNDS LIKE, that sounds a whole lot like Bobby Clarke. During the “Bullies” era of the team, Bobby Clarke was throwing slashes and telling people off all the time, but you know how many fights he has been in? 41, yes, 41, for a guy who would push around. Personally, I call Bobby Clarke a pest, like Matthew Barnaby, but with goal scoring ability. At least, Barnaby was funny also.

    • phillyhatesyou - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:14 PM

yea and crosby probably wont break a dozen fights in his whole career so what is your point? when he does fight he has to jump people like he did to brett mclean from the panthers a few years ago.

  10. phillyhoosiers - Apr 3, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Half the team… Berube could still bet up the whole team.. Probably at the same time.. While Cid hides behind the ref.

    • ironheadjr - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:34 PM

That’s awesome but this is a hockey game not a boxing match. That remark is unprofessional but completely believable considering the source. This ridiculousness didn’t work 2 and 3 years ago, it’s not going to work now. It’s the SOS with the Flygirls, just different parts plugged in.

Laviolette was nothing but class and success with the Hurricanes, winning one Cup, which incidentally is more than the Flyers in the last 37 years. Now that he’s with Philly he’s throwing 6 year old fits and calling people out. Whatadouche.

  11. bcjim - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Is there a bolt in that guys neck?

    • warrenhottie - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:30 PM

Yeah Malkin has it below each ear

  12. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:06 PM

He said it himself, the game was over so the Pens put their tough guys on the ice. That’s the right thing to do. You don’t put your top guys out at that point. I’m sure if they did then we’d be hearing complaints about how Pittsburgh was trying to run up the score. The real botom line is that these two teams just hate each other no matter what they do.

    • ironheadjr - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:35 PM

You don’t have your best players out there at the end of a game that is pretty much out of reach against these clowns. You can’t trust them.

  13. dowhatifeellike - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:13 PM

Crosby may be a sandy vag but I don’t think he’s dirty.

    • hockeyhead137 - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Not dirty? He landed a two hand slash that broke his stick across the leg of Voracek….not dirty? The only thing worse than that was the non-call. Cindy doesn’t need enforcers he’s got the refs on his side.

  14. tharealest0431 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:18 PM

This guy is a joke just like jagr is a joke an the whole flyers organization are an even bigger joke

    • warrenhottie - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Agree so much Crosby is a bellyacher joke

  15. bleed4philly - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:39 PM

  17. fcs34 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:44 PM

Crosby has had bowel movements with more talent and class than Berube.

    • hockeyhead137 - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Cindy has about as much class as you do.

  18. bagjr387 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:55 PM

clearly Craig Berube hasn’t seen matt cooke in action. nice to see the sh*t slinging contest begin, its just like politcs

  19. kgun80 - Apr 3, 2012 at 8:59 PM

I don’t Crosby is dirty.. Just a punk.. Always a tough guy when the refs are in-between him and his opponent.. Mallon does take liberties .. This is because they know thanks to Bettman, they can do what they want. I have never seen a team get away with more BS.. I get protecting the product.. I know Crosby and Malkin are a draw but seriously I have never seen a team get away with more and get obvious preferential treatment. It’s like they are a team of NFL quarterbacks .. Can’t touch em .. Cant call a penalty on them, even obvious ones like Crosbys slash on Giroux after the face off the ref just dropped the puck.. He didn’t see that? I AM NOT A FLYERS FAN

    • bagjr387 - Apr 3, 2012 at 9:03 PM

      linesmen drop the puck too

    • Kristenaux - Apr 5, 2012 at 5:28 PM

  20. ikillchicken - Apr 3, 2012 at 9:00 PM

This whole feud is nothing but good news for the rest of the teams out there. It’s tough to deny, no matter who you pull for, that these two are two of the better teams in the east. At this point though they’re pretty much gonna destroy each other in the first round. Whoever wins will still lose half their team to injury based on the way this rivalry is going.

  21. sjsharksfan11 - Apr 3, 2012 at 9:18 PM

I am now Craig Berube’s biggest fan. Now will someone pull a Bertuzzi on Crosbaby please???

    • habsman - Apr 3, 2012 at 10:29 PM

      Typical American clown.

    • freewillig - Apr 5, 2012 at 5:25 PM

This is one of the worst comments I’ve ever seen. You’re really going to wish a broken neck on someone? So much for a civil society.

  22. id4joey - Apr 3, 2012 at 9:41 PM

Boo whoo! Berube, one of the cleanest players ever to play in the NHL (not). Give me a break! What’s with all the whining. Since when is it distasteful to hit a player with his head between his legs. Oh! And of course Shelley and Rinaldo are the poster boys for clean hockey. Hahaha!

  23. matthewmacisaac - Apr 3, 2012 at 9:51 PM

There is a guy (Berube) who knows more about the game than any of us posting, just telling the truth. I’m a Flyer fan, but I have no respect for Crosby because he’s a scumbag, which with his talent , he doesn’t need to be. Why can’t he be more like super Mario? I didn’t like Mario, but I sure did respect him because he always played with class and dignity. He never got all the leeway that Crosby gets, but he didn’t need it because he was a real star, not a manufactured (thanks Bettman) star. If Crosby had to play under the conditions Mario did, he’d be a fourth liner (not really, since those guys are tough). Crosby just acts like a spoiled 4 year old. I just hope that the refs call the games fairly in the playoffs, no favorites, that’s all I ask.

  24. flyersgoalscoredby88 - Apr 3, 2012 at 10:18 PM

Well, of I want an expert on being dirty, I could do worse than berube.

Crosby is filthy, Malkin is dirty. Huge difference. You don’t see Sid punching guys with their gloves on, slew-footing, or trying to cheap shot with elbows. That’s par for Malkin.

    • bipolar123 - Apr 6, 2012 at 7:54 PM

i dont know where all of this comes from….malkin dirty??? everyone plays hard.. everyone has gloves to their faces..every game..just jealousy

  25. malkinrulez - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:07 PM

Malkin and Crosby are dirty and the flyers are filled with saints. Perhaps booby should help find a way to beat the rangers and not worry about the pens.

  26. ironheadjr - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:38 PM

Prediction: You’re not going to see much action this Saturday, nobody wants to be out for the playoffs. Come playoff time, it’s a different story though. Pens smoke BobLOLvsky and BryzgLOLov.

  27. sweezz - Apr 3, 2012 at 11:45 PM

    • somethingcleverandoriginal - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:31 AM

Oh, so I guess now hockey is a sport where everyone walks on eggshells and is sure not to hit anyone. Good Lord, people. It’s HOCKEY! I suppose that by posting this video from YouTube you think that every other player in the NHL had never pulled a cheap hit like this before? And yeah. It got past the refs. I guess the refs pick up on every little potential hit in every hockey game, too. Everyone who watches hockey and loves the game has been disappointed by a missed call or two. And if you think Malkin (or Crosby, like the rest of this discussion thinks) is dirty, then maybe you should check out some other players in the NHL. Don’t act like you know when you have no idea.

      • sweezz - Apr 4, 2012 at 12:21 PM

This story isn’t about every dirty player in the NHL. This story is about Malkin and Crysby being the dirtiest players on the Penguins. So I showed video evidence to help prove the accusations. You cannot spin this to make them look any less dirty. There is no need for a discussion here. Good day sir.

      • somethingcleverandoriginal - Apr 4, 2012 at 1:10 PM

The flyers would take Crosby and Malkin any day. There’s no denying it. So why say they’re dirty at all? Like I said, it’s called hockey. Not hopscotch. They’re good players. With real talent. Just because they Flyers’ most talented player is 40 years old (and made his career with the Pens) doesn’t mean they have to whine about something totally irrelevant to Sunday’s game. The whole brawl started after a cheap hit by Schenn, a clean hit by Vitale, and this article is about Malkin and Crosby being dirty? Either way, he flyers won, the series is going to be a good one, that’s that.

Everyone knows NBC hates everything Penguins anyway. If you want proof of that, check out the Milbury articles.

  28. danphipps01 - Apr 4, 2012 at 12:16 AM

Meanwhile, deep in the dungeons of Matt Cooke’s house, cold laughter echoes forth.

    “Soon,” he smiles, “Soon…”

  29. ballsohardu - Apr 4, 2012 at 1:07 AM

Woah woah dont talk about Malkin like that. Crosby on the other hand is a different story. Rip him to shreds. Hes dirty not malkin.

    Go sabres

    What a bunch of p**sies…

  32. benzoids - Apr 4, 2012 at 6:14 AM

  34. broadstbully - Apr 4, 2012 at 7:00 AM

As a Flyers fan, it disturbs me that my team’s players and coaches have resorted to sounding like their fans. Just shut up and play hockey.

    • mannixxx - Apr 4, 2012 at 3:43 PM

Now that’s the comment of a true hockey fan…Props to you.

  35. pmac26 - Apr 4, 2012 at 7:03 AM

It takes alot of balls to call Crosby and Malkin dirty with his track record and Paul Holmgren running the team. 2 of the dirtiest players to ever play the game!!!!

  36. benzoids - Apr 4, 2012 at 8:09 AM

Me thinks Craig Berube and Bill Romanowski may have been separated at birth. Same goes for Phil Mickelson and Pete Laviolette.

And yes, Crosby and Malkin do play w/ a bit of an edge. New York, Jr. (Philly) would take either one of them on their team any day.

  37. gsr1191 - Apr 4, 2012 at 8:56 AM

Wow this is starting to get ridiculous. I dont think i have ever seen a team complain so much after a WIN…yes they won the game. The way they are reacting to a CLEAN hit after a WIN, you would think they just lost game 7 of the stanley cup. I guess the Pens were still in their head last night when they got their butts kicked by the Rangers.

Also, this jackarse of a coach would take Crosby in a split second if he was offered in a trade. The captains job is to talk with refs. Sure he whined when he was an 18yr old kid, but he doesnt whine anymore. he more or less goes over and talks to the refs for clarification, like EVERY CAPTAIN IN THE NHL DOES.

  38. rg3isvictory - Apr 4, 2012 at 9:03 AM

As a Caps fan I was excited to see such a great player make a comeback. Quality hockey play is always amazing to watch nomatter what team you happen to be a fan of and something we in DC only get to see every third game this season. With that said, Crosby has earned the nick-name “crybaby” and he doesn’t seem to mind it or he’d stop running over to the refs. between play. Crosby is in a position to get hit like all other players. The idea that anytime Crosby gets hit is, unfair or a penalty doesn’t help the perceptions that he is a whiner!!! For me personally, I love his talent and enjoy his play but dont have respect for the NBA/MLS like politicking he does throughout most games. I’m wishing on a star the OVI gets his sh*t together and those two return to pushing each others play to even higher levels than before.

  44. bbk1000 - Apr 4, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Strange hearing anybody remotely connected to the Flyers talking about dirty players, their players and fans are alike, cheap shot artists.

I have to agree though, Crosby is not only a dirty player, but a wimp to boot.

Crosby gets the calls and protection because he is a “star” of the league, but when he gets hit I love it….

  45. hazlydose - Apr 4, 2012 at 9:49 PM

He would know a lot about being dirty. He is seventh ALL TIME in NHL penalty minutes.

  46. failuresinthisworld - Apr 4, 2012 at 11:30 PM

I honestly can not believe that the Flyers of all teams are complaining about ‘gutless’ the Penguin coaches and calling Malkin and Crosby ‘dirty’. Scott Hartnell bites people and is quickly becoming the new Sean Avery, but he is just ‘gritty’. The Flyers have their reputation for a reason. If Schenn was pissed off and had something to say to Crosby he could’ve got in front of him and beat him senseless. Not a crosscheck to the back of Crosby. That seemed ‘gutless’ and ‘dirty’ to me to hit a player in the back who has no idea it’s coming. And the whole idea of getting upset about the clean hit makes absolutely no sense. There’s a reason you have your tough line in when a game gets like that. The Flyers found that out.

That said, I can’t wait for this Playoff series and the Playoffs in general. Most likely will just mute the tv though, don’t want to hear the bs.

As an old-time hockey fan, I have to chuckle at a Flyer coach saying this about Crosby and Malkin, even though it’s true. The perfect example of the kind of player Berube was talking about was the Flyers’ own Bobby Clark. Clark would slash and cross check with impunity. Then, when an opponent took offense, Bobby would run and hide behind Schultz or Saleski or another big guy. I sat on the glass behind the goal for 10 years, so I saw it many times with my own eyes.
