With this morning’s news that Pierre Gauthier has been fired as general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, here’s a list of 10 possible candidates to replace him:

Patrick Roy

The former Habs goalie great is a legend in Montreal and he recently had to deny he’d been offered the job. But given he’s spent his post-retirement career in junior hockey, does he have the requisite experience to be a GM in the NHL? Plus there’s the possibility he’s holding out to join the Nordiques, if they do indeed return to Quebec City via Phoenix.

Julien Brisebois

The assistant GM under Steve Yzerman in Tampa Bay. Brisebois spent a number of years in the Montreal organization and has AHL managing experience.

Pierre McGuire

The NBC analyst has been in the running for other GM jobs around the NHL. McGuire’s fully immersed in the league and, yes, he’s bilingual.

Claude Loiselle

The assistant GM under Brian Burke in Toronto, he’s responsible for managing the salary cap and negotiating contracts.

Pat Brisson

One of the NHL’s most prominent agents, it’ll be hard to find someone more familiar with the inner workings of the league. Former agent Mike Gillis won GM of the year in Vancouver last season, which the Habs might note.

Jim Nill

The assistant GM under Ken Holland in Detroit, is there a better organization in which to learn the craft?

Vincent Damphousse

The former Habs captain and NHLPA executive, he’d be a popular choice with the fans.

Marc Bergevin

The assistant GM under Stan Bowman in Chicago, it’s always helpful to flash a newish Stanley Cup ring at interviews.

Craig Button

Current TV analyst and former Flames GM, his name often comes up when there are openings around the league.

Paul Fenton

The assistant GM in Nashville under David Poile, the Predators’ success with a limited budget is a feather in his cap.

Did they not already announce that its roy and hartley coming in?

  2. themajorleagueblog - Mar 29, 2012 at 12:08 PM

Personally, I don’t think Damphousse is in because of his NHLPA position. Like you said, Patrick Roy could be holding out for the Nordiques. Pierre McGuire didn’t do so hot in Hartford, maybe it would be a change in pace, personally, I don’t know the guy, but I think he’s happy at NBC Sports. Hence, why he left TSN/RDS as an analyst/commentator. To me, the frontrunner is Julien Brisebois, he is the GM of the, in my opinion, most on fire AHL team in that league, the Norfolk Admirals. They lead the league in points, and look like a terrific farm for the Lightning.

Please hire Pierre! Get him off television.

Only if he takes Darren Pang and Brian Engblom with him.

for the love of god make sure we speaks French, we dont need riots in the streets of Montreal!

I couldn’t agree more with both of you tarotsujimoto74 & homelanddefense.

Sorry you both beat me to it.

As a Leafs fan (cue laughter) I’d love to see the Habs hire Patrick Roy as GM and bring back Mario Tremblay as coach! LOL.

  7. bcisleman - Mar 29, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Probably Bergevin would be the best choice. Working under the Bowmans, he has had good mentorship and his French Canadian ethnicity would win over Habs fans.

    • firstandonlywarning - Mar 29, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Stan Bowman hasn’t done much in this league…..at all
And -10000000 Thumbs down to someone who tries to point to his ring that Dale Tallon bought for him.

      • bcisleman - Mar 29, 2012 at 7:00 PM

First, Stan’s done enough. Second, a large part of Tallon’s contribution was screwing the cap system up so badly that the Hawks had to sell off many of the players who helped them win the Cup. That mess Tallon left for Stan and his dad to sort out. Third, Stan’s dad is part of management in Chicago and there isnt a better hockey manager anywhere in the universe.

      • firstandonlywarning - Mar 30, 2012 at 12:41 AM

Sounds like you’re complaining about winning the Cup, and then saying Daddy is part of his success. And then I guess you figure Scottie with help out Bergevin too

  8. firstandonlywarning - Mar 29, 2012 at 3:05 PM

    Julien Brisebois – too soon
    Pierre McGuire – not happening
Jim Nill – Best choice out there by FAR
Vincent Damphousse – Is this a joke?
Marc Bergevin – No, stan bowman himself is questionable
    Craig Button – see Damphousse
    Paul Fenton – Sleeper candidate

Pat Roy – The Habs new GM
Nill is the best choice but the Habs would have to break the bank and totally commit to him and his people. Don’t see that happening

  9. firstandonlywarning - Mar 29, 2012 at 4:28 PM

And to those who do not know (Leaf fans)
Jim Nill is not only assistant GM for four Stanley cup champions
He is also a director of scouting for the Wings.

In other words he has done so much more than any of these candidates. (and so so so much more than Burkie)
Or long story short he is the most qualified and deserving front office man who has yet to take over a team himself.

Will the Habs or Leafs be smart enough to figure this out?
    Doubt it

Of course us Red Wings fans would be happy to keep Jim part of the organization.

Gotta be Loiselle, he’s a natch…forget the number one A Hole in Patrick “the statue of liberty” Roy. QC wants that turkey home in time for Christmas. Nill’s a Red Wing for keeps….Holland the heir apparent to run the whole shebang after which Stevie will come home to where he belongs! Book it….

  11. vsl3993 - Mar 29, 2012 at 9:22 PM

I think Pierre Maguire would be the best choice. His knowledge of scouting and drafting puts him in my mind the obvious choice. Plus he’s bilingual !!

  12. sabatimus - Mar 29, 2012 at 11:20 PM

As a Bruins fan, Pierre absolutely gets my vote.

  13. id4joey - Apr 1, 2012 at 7:19 AM

Maybe Geoff and Serge can build a team of a new breed including those on the list.

Special Hockey Consultant – Serge Savard
Head of Player Development – Pierre Mcguire
    General Manager – Julien Brisebois
    Asst. GM – Vincent Damphousse
    Coach – Patrick Roy

As indicated by this season, if it’s bad in the office it’s worse on the ice.

And a French Canadian wearing the ‘C’ is also mandatory. How about Vinny?

Bring back the fire and passion.
