Heard an interesting comment on radio which seems pretty relevant; they were talking about the Flames, and how they have built their entire team around one star goalie and one star forward.

They said with the talent Kipper has shown since the lockout, if he played for the Leafs, they'd be in the playoffs every year. It wasn't my take, but I thought it was relevant considering how bad some of the goalies on that list have been.

What's not notes is how they srafted Tukku Raask after a stellar world juniors & then traded him to boston for Andrew Raycroft. That right there summed up John Ferguson Jr.

Putting this all on their shoddy goaltending isn't quite fair. They also haven't had a legitimate #1 center or #1 defenseman in a long time either, and they finally just got a credible coach. It all comes down to ownership in the NHL and whether or not the ownership is committed to winning, spending money WISELY, and holding its staff accountable.

Examples: Canucks after the sale to the Aquilinis, Hawks after Bill Wirtz died, Illitch's crazy record of success in Detroit, and if I may be permitted to reach a bit Super Mario taking over the Penguins.

Obviously other factors are important, but if you look at the teams in the basement (NYI, TOR, CBJ), they have owners who really are doing nothing to make their teams better. One could argue that Katz in EDM is also more concerned with a new arena than a cup.
