Crosby vs Ovechkin: Which Sunday goal was more impressive (with video)

Mar 26, 2012, 12:59 AM EDT

Remember when the greatest rivalry (or at very least the most publicized) in the NHL was Sidney Crosby versus Alex Ovechkin? That contest has obviously been sidetracked over the last two seasons due to the time Crosby has missed and Ovechkin’s struggles. However, Crosby is finally healthy and Ovechkin couldn’t be hotter right now. On top of that both of them had highlight reel worthy goals on Sunday. So why don’t we make up for lost time and ask the question: Who scored the more impressive goal on Sunday? You can check out both goals below before placing your vote.

Johanssen takes a hit so ovechkin can shoot against some minny wild stiff vs. crosby undressing zidlicky and the best goaltender ever? hmmm…

Can this please not become a normal thing when they both score on the same night?

    “Crosby v Ovi round 52″…

Who in the NHL is paying you to write this? I’m a Caps fan who never wants to read about this manufactured rivalry again. Here, let me just say it: “Crosby’s better”. Okay? Now could we talk about some other hockey players?

When I read highlight reel goal and Ovechkin in the same sentence … I don’t expect to see a hard low snap shot from above the faceoff circle go through a goaltender.

The only similarity between these two goals is that they were scored on the same night.

Did Crosby also get an assist on his goal? He should have, that was a nice touch pass.

What about Ovi’s goal makes it worthy of a highlight reel… Pretty basic. and crosby’s goal wasn’t as impressive as his setup for the breakaway the goal was just icing on the ridiculous play.

  7. Buffalo Grumblings - Mar 26, 2012 at 8:48 AM

    Neither. Goalies looked pedestrian.

Crosby can do that to the best. Ha a buffalo fan acting like he sees that every night.

Commenting as a hockey fan since before you were born. Crosby is good, just not “heads and shoulders above everyone else playing the game” good. Though he might be the ugliest Penguin since Cliff Smautz.

OV. No contest, he was practically wearing that Dman while shooting, Cindy was on a clean breakaway.

    • hockeyfan1701 - Mar 26, 2012 at 9:20 AM

      Cindy….grow up child…..

    • napoleonblownapart6887 - Mar 26, 2012 at 9:31 AM

The reason he was on a clean breakaway was because of the terrific touch and move he made around Zidlicky. Also he wasn’t really “wearing” the Defenseman – if anything Ovie used him as a screen – probably helped more than anything.

With that said I agree with the general theme of most of these comments: Crosby’s goal was better, but neither was particularly mind-blowing – neither one will be in the top 20 at season’s end.

Moron it was what he did to get the breakaway durrrrrr

      • bcjim - Mar 26, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Really it was that great? Give me a break.

Look Cindy is probably the best player in the league but of those two…OV>>>>Cindy

  9. dougr42 - Mar 26, 2012 at 9:17 AM

Ovi has scored that samed goal about a billion times, yawn.

Cindy’s was better. Also, did anyone else notice that he punched himself in the face while celebrating? DERP.

Well… Crosby wins the debate, but the one I’d like to point out is Zdlicky. How the hell do you let CROSBY- of all people- get past you like that? (Not that it looked like he had a whole lot of say in the matter, I admit.)

    • dougr42 - Mar 26, 2012 at 11:30 AM

people are still playing soft on Sid. Zdlicky could have hit him without taking an interference call.

  11. rsl22 - Mar 26, 2012 at 12:03 PM

Unabashed Caps fan….Crosby’s was better. But OV’s had some other highlights this week that would have made for a more interesting question.

It almost feels like Crosby coming back has put an extra step in OV’s game, like he lives for that rivalry.

Ovechkin shot a wrister through a couple of hacks on one of the worst teams in the entire NHL. Anyone on their roster could have scored that goal. There was nobody worth his paycheque in front of him. I don’t know why you’re so impressed, Ryan. Your standards seem pretty low.
