Former NHL exec: Patrick Roy to be next Montreal GM, Bob Hartley to coach

Mar 23, 2012, 11:58 AM EDT

Former Capitals goalie Shawn Simpson — who has worked as a Maple Leafs scout and as the director of hockey operations in Washington — has tweeted an interesting rumor:

source:

The rumor makes sense (logistically speaking):

– Roy and Hartley won a Stanley Cup together with the Avalanche in 2001.

– Despite his anglophone-sounding name, Hartley’s first language is French (he’s a Franco-Ontarian). He spent two seasons coaching Laval of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

– In case you haven’t heard, it’s beneficial for the Habs coach to speak French.

– Roy’s already rumored to be leaving his QMJHL team, the Quebec Remparts, at season’s end. (Though he did shoot down those rumors recently.)

– Current Habs GM Pierre Gauthier has struggled through a nightmarish campaign and Randy Cunneyworth was essentially hired to be fired. Both could be out the door after the season’s done.

It makes so much sense that anywhere else it would be likely. But… if it makes sense, why would the Habs do it? ;)

Kidding aside, it would be good to see Hartley return to the NHL. His firing in Colorado made no sense, and he didn’t have a particularly good Atlanta team to work with- why he hasn’t worked since is beyond me.

Combine that with my being a huge Roy fan, and it’s going to be hard for me to continue my hatred of Montreal, at least as much as I’d like to.

This really does make to much sense. As an Avs fan, I was upset that Hartley was fired and even more so when Tony Granato got two cracks at coaching the team.

I love this rumor; assuming Gauthier and Cunneyworth are fired and that Roy and Hartley are hired, all before Gauthier and Cunneyworth are actually fired. It is pretty clear that they should be fired, but it’s not all bad. They have a chance to win the lottery this summer, and pick up some nice high picks.

Maybe someone can play this game with Burke; let’s find out who the next GM of the Leafs should be.
