Sean Bergenheim sends Hurricanes a golf swing taunt

If any NHL franchise should cringe at the end-of-season “golf swing” taunt, you’d think it would be the Florida Panthers. After all, the Southeast Division leaders haven’t made the playoffs since 2000.

Then again, Sean Bergenheim was one game (and two goals) away from the Stanley Cup finals in 2011 with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Rather than just count his many blessings,* Adam Gold reports that Bergenheim used the classic taunt on the Carolina Hurricanes after they convincingly beat his Panthers 3-1.

Let’s weigh the pros and cons to the gesture:

Pros

  • Sure, it’s juvenile … but it’s kind of funny.
  • Brad Marchand did it last season and the Boston Bruins were angry. Then he had a monster postseason and they eagerly re-signed him.
  • The Hurricanes are out of the playoff picture, but it gives us all fodder for next season, when both teams might be taken seriously enough to develop a decent rivalry.

Cons

  • Do the Panthers really want to mess with fate when their spot isn’t clinched? A team with this kind of drought shouldn’t be so brazen.
  • Bergenheim has 22 points, a -3 rating and two game-winners this season. If he was in Carolina, would anything be different? Kris Versteeg or Brian Campbell had the right to make that taunt, though.

So where do you stand? Are you a fan of the swagger or do you think it’s a lame move? (If you don’t like it, please keep your comments clean.)

* – To be specific: riding a conveniently timed playoff run into a hefty contract with the Panthers, who conveniently look primed to snatch the third seed.

Bergenheim will be golfing after a 5 Game Series with the New Jersey Devils in three and a half weeks

Gesture wouldn’t have been made if there wasn’t a bench-clearing confrontation after the game. He just got pissed after a frustrating game and some fighting after the final whistle. It shouldn’t be read into too much.

But it is a little funny, right?

its kind of funny but when the guy doing it is such a bit player there is no reason to do it. and especially for a team that’s been out of the playoffs like the panthers

Bit player is a stretch. He has 17 goals and plays second line minutes

I’d argue that the system promotes not caring about making the playoffs. Would any of you guys try extra hard every year at your jobs for the right to work even harder for another 4-8 weeks…For *No more pay*????

They have got to give guys a financial incentive because not all of them want to keep working for free.

Yeah being the best team in the world at your sport means nothing without extra money? What? You have obviously never played any sports in your life

Keep deluding yourself…you think every Russian/Euro holds the Stanley cup in the high regard Canadians might? Probably not.

Plenty of guys do care but if you don’t think there are guys out there that just want to hit the beach/golf course/ whatever, then you are a fool.

My name is Happy Gilmore. Ever since I was old enough to skate, I loved hockey. I wasn’t really the greatest skater though. But that didn’t stop my dad from teaching me the secret of smacking his greatest slap shot.

Another product of the removal of the instigator.

Another guy that should get punched in the face, and isn’t much of a player in the league, but is too much of a punk to take what he deserves and would most likely turn his back and run from the confrontation, ending up being suckered ala Steve “the Rat” Moore where everyone will cry for the talentless goof who brought it on himself.
