I wish this shocked me. I really do. I guess the lesson to be taken from all of this is: If you’re going to make low, dirty hits and you want to get away with it, make sure you’re not 5’9″.

Ya that’s definitely a solid point, and it happens a lot. Just because a guy who skirts the line doesnt have a history of actually getting suspended he’s not “known’” for being dirty.

(Although between Kesler and Marchand specifically, there’s a clear difference)

Vindicated!!!! I was posting about this very issue yesterday. It’s almost ironic that they used Marchy as an example. As I have said all season there is one set of rules for the Bruins and another set for everybody else.

The reputation argument is another case of the League letting us all down. Kesler still doesn’t have any “history of suspension or fine” so the next time he does something dirty the league will say he has no history….what a joke.

For clipping the difference between the two minute call and the 5 and a game is whether the player is injured or not so thats why it was only two. Looked to me like if Kesler was only defending himself, and thats a big if, he had plenty of time to do it cleanly rather then go low. hated it when it happened to salo so i have to hate this one too … he should have gotten some sort of supplemental discipline or atleast a fine

Kesler is 6’2. Marchand is 5’9. Obviously he will be lower.

Another crock from the NHL. Where is the consistency? Clipping for one player is a 5 minute major, game misconduct and 5 game suspension. Clipping for a Canuck is a 2 minute minor and no suspension. WTF?!

Not as bad as Marchands, and Kesler doesnt have near the reputation so it’s not really comparing apple to apples.

I did think they’d put in the press box or a game or two tho, Shanahan was so clear in his explanation regarding what makes a hit like this questionable or not questionable … and then goes back to the Colie Campbell playbook of throwing darts at a board to see what the penalty should be.

When are they going to realize they don’t need to worry about tweaking and changing rules every year … and just actually call the rules they have in the books?

Marchand’s hit was slightly lower. I guess Kesler didn’t hit him hard enough to injure so 2 minutes was enough?

I agree with the decision from a hockey standpoint, this isn’t a really bad hit. Looks like he hits him above the knees with a pretty good hip check. From a consistency standpoint it’s not a great call. Either suspend guys for hits like this every time or not at all.

“Lucky”? Luck had nothing to do with it. Kesler just didn’t hit him very hard, which is why he got right up and wasn’t hurt. If Kesler wanted to hurt him, Clutterbuck wouldn’t be walking.

Marchand’s was worse, but this is still extraordinarily dumb on Kesler’s behalf. While it was only 2-minutes on the ice, I wouldn’t be upset if he had received a few games to get the message through to him.

Really, if the league is serious about cleaning up the game, this is what supplemental discipline is for: correcting calls that missed the severity of an act on the ice.

All season long the league let’s things go when a Wild player is involved. The hit that ended Bouchard’s season just to name one. The message all year long has been “do whatever you want to Wild players, you’ll get 2 minutes then go on about your business.” What a joke

Canucks fan here. Dumb move by Kesler. He should know better especially given team-mate Sami Salo’s history with clipping from January’s Brad Marchand incident.

The department of player safety has just degenerated into a complete farce. It’s not all Shanny’s fault as the league insists on having draconian rules that take into account injuries on plays. Both of the hits above are basically the same thing. Both players knew what they were doing and both players went low in a cheap and predatory fashion. Marchand receives 5 games because Salo landed awkwardly on his head after the hit. Kessler gets none because Clutterbuck landed in a slightly more graceful fashion. If you want this hit and others out of the game, punish the action regardless of the hitter, the hittee and the result. Until then, the department of player safety will continue to be nothing more than a dog and pony show.

Watching those both side by side makes you wonder how the NHL justifies their inconsistencies.

Not only was Marchand suspended 5 games and Kessler none but in the game Marchand got a 5 minute major and a game misconduct compared to Kessler’s 2 minute tripping. Oh and Vancouver scored the game winning goal during the 5 minute penalty.

If suspensions are about injuries then Tom Sestito should have been suspended for possibly ending Nathan Horton’s career. But Mr. Shanahan didn’t deem that necessary. Is it really that hard to be consistent?

the “intent” might be different. Kessler was coming full speed in open ice.
He is lucky he didn’t implode Clutterbuck’s knee.
