Graham James gets two years in jail

Graham James

Former junior hockey coach Graham James has been handed a two-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting two of his former teenage players, one of which was ex-NHL star Theoren Fleury.

The ruling, announced today in a Winnipeg court, will be widely criticized as too lenient. The Crown wanted a six-year prison sentence. James’ other victim, Todd Holt, called the ruling “nothing short of a national travesty” in a statement.

James was given a 3.5-year prison sentence (he served 18 months) in 1997 for sexually assaulting two other former players, and Judge Catherine Carlson said the court must consider what he would have received for all four assaults.

“There is no sentence this court can impose that will give back to Mr. Holt and Mr. Fleury that which was taken by Mr James,” Carlson said.

But the judge also pointed out that Mr. James expressed remorse, apologized to his victims and has experienced what she called “an extreme degree of humiliation” — factors that warranted a reduction in his sentence.

She said Mr. James could have fought extradition from Mexico, where he had been living, but voluntarily came back to face the charges. He pleaded guilty and has kept a regular full-time job.

Given the damage that Mr. James has caused and the shadow his actions have cast on youth hockey in Canada, two years is far too light of sentence.

This guy makes me sick and this sentence is a disgrace.

“She said Mr. James could have fought extradition from Mexico, where he had been living, but voluntarily came back to face the charges.”

Great, except he went and hid there in the first place, and would have continued merrily living a happy life if someone hadn’t ferreted him out.

    Two years… incredible. Just incredible.

““There is no sentence this court can impose that will give back to Mr. Holt and Mr. Fleury that which was taken by Mr James,” Carlson said.”

BUT YOU MAKE THE EFFORT ANYWAY.

Canada is earning itself quite the history of protecting this guy. What about his victims? If I’m one of his victims, I consider suing to hold protectors liable for criminal negligence.

Why the hell does the humiliation that James suffered factor into his sentence… “well he’s really embarrassed by this whole, ‘sexually assaulting multiple boys and stealing their innocence and really the rest of their lives’ thing, so I think we have to take that into account.”

No you don’t. You don’t have to take that into account. His humiliation is what comes with these monstrous acts and should NOT be a factor in sentencing. It just doesn’t. Makes me sick

What a joke….not the first time I have been ashamed of the Canadian “justice” system and probably not the last…

I’m at a loss for words at such a short sentence for such a horrible crime.

Seems like child abusers and their enablers in the sports world don’t have much to worry about these days. Hell, sometimes people even want to name stadiums after them.

What do you get for bank robbery in Canada? I could use some cash and it might be worth the jail time it sounds like.

I want to know who is giving these comments a thumbs down. This guy is a SCUMBAG 2 years is a joke. I’m disgusted you can be charged more for growing your own personal marijuana without even selling it. I hope he doesn’t make it through the 2 years.

Weak. Mandatory minimums for scum like this is the only part of Harper’s crime bill I support. The judge should’ve thrown the book at James. Not doing so because he says he is remorseful is despicable. The degree of humiliation this guy has suffered doesn’t even compare to that of his victims. He better not ever show his face in Canada for his own sake.

Let’s all hope he becomes a ‘girlfriend’ of one big ugly inmate who treats him like he treated his victims for the entire 2 year sentence. Then he should be castrated.

two years may have been ok, if they had castrated him first

Further proof that the justice system is a joke.
