Talk amongst yourselves: Flyers snap Penguins win streak, win 3-2 in overtime

Mar 18, 2012, 3:18 PM EDT

The comments section is open. Go say what you think. No big whoop.

We’ll give you some topics:

—- Safe to say there’s no love lost between these two teams, eh? Leave it to Scott Hartnell to win it in overtime.

—- Claude Giroux reminded us that he’s having a pretty special season as well.

—- Evgeni Malkin has to be the league MVP after scoring a goal like this.

This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!

—- Not every game Sidney Crosby plays is going to be a memorable one.

—- How Zac Rinaldo stayed in the game after taking this high stick from Scott Hartnell is beyond comprehension. Hockey players are kind of tough.

Now go, talk amongst yourselves.

    Awesome game.

  2. letangusespertplus - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:22 PM

    Tyler Kennedy.

  3. Matt - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:23 PM

Assuming that the Rangers can keep the top seed, this is extremely likely to be the 4-5 matchup in the East. Holy crap is it going to be an amazing series.

  4. darenpuppa31 - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:25 PM

Looked like the two best teams in the conference to me, besides the Flyers in the second.

  5. dsd3 - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:27 PM

Bryz is still the hottest goalie in the NHL. Been stealing the Flyers games right and left these days.

  6. napoleonblownapart6887 - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:27 PM

Hell of a game. Pens out played the Flyers for the first 40 minutes but Flyers played their best when it counted.

Tyler Kennedy needs to be scratched. I’m sick of him wasting opportunities with terrible shots.

Couple of dumb penalties taken by the Pens. Scott Hartnell is still a douche but he played really well all game.

  7. greggoldberg - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:28 PM

As much as it scares me as a Flyers fan, this would be a ridiculously awesome playoff series.

  8. illad3lph1a - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:30 PM

Great game these two teams hate each other! Go flyers big win!

  9. fbothharbaughs - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:31 PM

    Hartnell has a sweet perm

      • martysbetter - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:49 PM

        hartnell uses soul glo

  10. rainyday56 - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Hey Sid, minus-one on the losing goal. Reality bites, kid.

  11. ziggy7358 - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:34 PM

go home Pittsburgh … sick of these bandwagon jumping fans and the nhl riding the penguins malkin ..crosby . deucche bags.

    • miketoasty - Mar 19, 2012 at 9:09 AM

Bandwagon fans? All I read through the first half of the season was about how terrible Bryz was and how you (I mean that in a general consensus of Flyers fans) wanted him gone. Now that he is winning, you guys love him.. and you call us the bandwagoners? Puh lease.

  12. bobhpine - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:37 PM

Reality bites? Art Ross trophy, Rocket Richard trophy, Lester Pearson trophy, Hart trophy, stanley cup, gold medal…that’s some reality.

    1975 buddy.

    • rainyday56 - Mar 18, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Aaaaaaannndd minus-one on the winning goal of the game. But that’s hockey.

      • bobhpine - Mar 18, 2012 at 4:45 PM

I guess small people revel in small victories

    • ml3939 - Mar 18, 2012 at 9:23 PM

Hey Bob, here is what I think of 1975 as I have stated in a previous post-

I respect the team the Penguins currently have and think they are a huge Cup threat with or without Crosby but historically beyond the 4 Cup appearances, the franchise has been pretty pathetic. They were a bad team that intentionally lost games so they could draft Lemeiux first overall and they were so bad in the early 2000′s they got the first overall pick to draft Fleury, the second overall pick to get Malkin and they were the worst team before the lockout, won the draft lottery and drafted Crosby first overall. The franchise has more losses than wins in it’s history. They have missed the playoffs more than twice as many times as the Flyers.

I will take the team that averages making the conference finals every 2-3 years since they have been in existence to the team that averages missing the plays every 2-3 years since they have been in existence.

      That’s some reality Bob.

      • southyank7 - Mar 18, 2012 at 10:32 PM

check your facts JACK PENS traded up 2 get MAF & flyers will be eating those salaries of Pronger & Ilya for years so many garage league calls today wasn’t even funny no worries though your creamsicle pansies still come cross state TWICE of which i’ll be @ the april 7th game giving Jagr his own salute

      • bobhpine - Mar 18, 2012 at 10:35 PM

        ok…I’ll take the cups

      • ml3939 - Mar 18, 2012 at 11:30 PM

My apologies Southyank, they were the second worst team the year before selecting MAF. Pronger will be on injured reserve and his salary will have no impact on their cap. I am sure Jagr will notice you in the stands.

Hey Bob, the Islanders have 4 Cups, I guess you would rather have that franchise too.

      • bobhpine - Mar 18, 2012 at 11:55 PM

I’d definitely rather have any team that’s won since the Gerald Ford administration.

      • ml3939 - Mar 19, 2012 at 12:03 AM

Well Bob, now I am not sure if you are a liar or of lesser intelligence. You will take the team that has been to one conference final since 1985.

      • bobhpine - Mar 19, 2012 at 12:14 AM

I would, because I’m younger than 37 years old and I would like to at least say my team has won once in my lifetime…so yes, the Flyers are more pathetic than the Islanders, you nailed it

      • ml3939 - Mar 19, 2012 at 12:47 AM

Yeah, I am just not buying it. 2 years ago if you had the choice to be an Islanders fan, Bruins fan, Blackhawks fan or Flyers fan, the Islanders would not have been your top choice because they won a Cup most recently.

    • djamesbart - Mar 19, 2012 at 2:33 PM

holy crap Bob – you destroyed them in this little conversation

  13. dougsautersmustache - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:42 PM

The Flyers wanted it more in that third period. The Penguins are so talented and they always bring the rush on net, but 11-game winning streak or no, they can’t lapse on defense that way. A Bryzgalov (well, *this* version of Bryzgalov) or a Lundqvist isn’t going to give up too many goals, so the Pens have to lock up the back end against the gritty Hartnells of the world, and they didn’t do that here.

That being said, losing in OT to a very, very good Flyers club isn’t certainly indicative of a collapse, and like somebody commented on another topic, I’m not sure there’s any team that could beat the Pens in a seven-game series at this point. But games like this — and the February 19th shellacking against the Sabres — are a great blueprint for teams looking to take down the Pens. Do your best to frustrate their scorers on the back-check, throw bodies at them and the pucks they shoot, weather the storm until they start to tire and slow down, then kick it into gear and pressure their defense until they make mistakes, because Fleury’s consistently sharp but rarely absolutely dominant.

    • bobhpine - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:50 PM

so the blueprint is to hope the penguins get tired from dominating the puck and firing shots? that’s brilliant

  14. ravenscaps48 - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:44 PM

Kris Letang and Chris Kunitz are two of the sneakiest players in the league… Kunitz should’ve gotten a misconduct for washing Hartnell like he did. And Letang is Hines Ward on skates. He gets praised by everyone but he does SO MUCH SNEAKY, DIRTY TRASH PLAY

    • ndrdog - Mar 18, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Yes, Kris Letang is a Jedi mind bending genus! The way he took over Scott Hartnell’s mind and forced him to highstick Zac Rinaldo (his own teammate) right in the face is just sick. The worst and most twisted part of his sick plan is that he also mind bended the Ref into giving HIM a double minor for the highstick, and in doing so, threw all of the suspicion off of himself but you, my friend, are smart enough to see through it. Well played, well played.

  15. heyzeus143 - Mar 18, 2012 at 3:49 PM

not wise to motivate the pens, why can’t the flyers play like that all the time, oh cause they can’t – see you apr 1st for a beatdown

  16. garryjercia - Mar 18, 2012 at 4:08 PM

    So much for ‘the franchise’.

    Losers

  17. paulsdamnblog - Mar 18, 2012 at 4:15 PM

Being a Flyers fan I have to say I really hate all things Penguins. That being said, I really want to see a first round matchup of these 2 though. Best rivalry in hockey hands down.

  18. num1eaglesfanyo - Mar 18, 2012 at 5:17 PM

what a game! Hartnel off the bench was awesome!

  19. danesmitty - Mar 18, 2012 at 5:17 PM

As a Pens fan, I will gladly take getting 5 out of 6 points on a three-game road trip against the Rangers, Devils, and Flyers.

  20. mrpickled - Mar 18, 2012 at 6:11 PM

    Nice soup cans, pitt sucks

  21. lasallehockey81 - Mar 18, 2012 at 6:39 PM

Small people revel in small victories.. Says the guy degrading people’s comments on a message board.

Speaking of soup cans.. The Soup Can Army picked an odd day to stop posting obnoxious stuff every 10 minutes. Must be busy.

    • snutchpro - Mar 18, 2012 at 8:11 PM

i’m scrolling through these comments just looking for that delusional pens fan. where’s the franchise and soupcan?! awesome game.

      • letangusespertplus - Mar 18, 2012 at 8:59 PM

oh i’m here. we lost to some ginger kids. 11-0-1 aint to shabby though.

      • kitshky - Mar 18, 2012 at 9:22 PM

Hey kid, you do realize that you just (finally) admitted that this stupid Soup Can Army crap is all just you right…

      • letangusespertplus - Mar 18, 2012 at 10:06 PM

nah not really bro. you can ask the admins on this site if our IP addresses are the same if you are that interested.

  22. jagrbomb18 - Mar 18, 2012 at 7:05 PM

I love all of these comments…not saying the flyers are saints but letang and malkin are 2 of the dirtiest players ive seen lately….

  23. lemieux00066 - Mar 18, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Look at the standings. So tired of Flyers fans. Guess I’d be angry too if my team hadn’t won a cup in over 36 years.

  24. steelcityfranchise - Mar 18, 2012 at 8:44 PM

Ok…stealing a game at home by a goal in OT against a team that dominated the entire game with their marvelous, dangling hawgs isn’t exactly convincing. Last time I checked, THE FRANCHISE is still only 1 pt out of 1st with queen henrik and his merry men struggling. With the girthy one back in the line up, there is no team that can take a 7 game series from the franchise. On a final note, I know the Philly fans are not calling Letang and his luscious locks dirty, he uses pert plus every day. SCA 4 EVER

    • letangusespertplus - Mar 18, 2012 at 9:00 PM

      WOO WOO WOO

      you know it.

      SCA

    • stakex - Mar 18, 2012 at 11:41 PM

Your post is full of fail.

First of all, Crosby has been only so-so in his return so far. Yes he has 5 points, but points are not a clear indicator of how good someone is actually playing. One could argue, and its probably true, Crosby’s production in the last three games has been a simple byproduct of the players around him being on fire right now and not his ability. I would think he will get better as he gets more games under him, but at this point its a little early to think his return will make a major impact on how beatable the Pens will be in the post season.

Second, the Penguins are in fact still one point out of first (actually, two points since the Rangers have the tie breaker). Spin it any way you want, but through the same amount of games the Rangers have been the better team… like it or not. Now that they are finally healthy (injuries are the main reason they have been on a slid lately) I don’t see the Rangers losing their grip on first place to either the Pens of the Flyers.

Besides, wouldn’t you rather a Pens-Flyers first round? That would be a GREAT first round… and a Rangers-Capitals first round wouldn’t be too horrible either.

      • miketoasty - Mar 19, 2012 at 9:47 AM

He’s playing with Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy. Oh yea the players around him are on fire, even on fire neither of these players will ever break the 30 goal mark.

  25. hockeyfan1701 - Mar 18, 2012 at 8:51 PM

It is a shame this will have to be a first round match up instead of a conference final match up.

  26. napoleonblownapart6887 - Mar 18, 2012 at 9:09 PM

To all of the Philly fans who are tripping over themselves to pat yourself on the back. Take it easy. It was just one game. A game fairly won, but just barely. This game (like a playoff series would be) is a knock down drag out dogfight.

And ravenscaps boy, let the big boys talk. Shouldn’t you be worried about just making the playoffs?

  27. flyersgoalscoredby88 - Mar 18, 2012 at 9:11 PM

Pens fans keep saying 1975…isn’t that e year the IRS padlocked the igloo cause the penguins couldn’t pay their taxes? Odd…a few short years after losing a superstar they went bankrupt…probably a one-time thing.

  28. lasallehockey81 - Mar 18, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Hilarious. The Flyers win, so to Pens fans it’s just one game. Had they won, they would have been asking to cancel the rest of the season and ship the cup over to Pittsburgh tomorrow with 12 games in a row and Crosby back. Yeah, it’s one game… But with 11 games to go and the Flyers 2 back of the fourth spot and 3 out of the top spot…it was one REALLY important game to win, hence the excitement. They’re all pretty much playoff games from here on out, so I’d get used to it.

  29. blomfeld - Mar 18, 2012 at 10:53 PM

    CROSBY SCHMOSBY …

Today Crosby is a “top five” player, no argument there … nonetheless, he still gets denied an invitation to any discussion regarding the game’s “greatest” including but not limited to, Morenz, Richard, Howe, Beliveau, Hull, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, etc … sorry there all you “flightless birds” fans, but that’s the cold hard truth ! …

    • kitshky - Mar 18, 2012 at 11:53 PM

Those players legacies are already defined, they’re retired with a complete body of work. Of course we shouldn’t compare him to them … do the research and compare his numbers and Cups to the players you mentioned at this point in their career and you have to recognize greatness while it’s happening. You’re trying to compare apples to apple pie here…

  30. lasallehockey81 - Mar 18, 2012 at 11:07 PM

Ok I’m a Flyers fan.. And that argument is insane. At the end of his career he’ll most likely be mentioned with those names but you know why he’s not yet? Probably because he’s 24 years old. How is that not blatantly obvious? At 24, Gordie Howe still had about 20 more years to make a name for himself. Gretzky.. 14 more years after 24. I can understand not liking the guy because of rivalry.. But to say not being mentioned with the games greats at 24 means anything at all is just crazy.

  31. writeit22 - Mar 19, 2012 at 12:06 AM

THE ENTIRE PENS TEAM PLAYERS ARE FABULOUS! Dupris, Crosby, Staal, Malkin, FLuery- every PLAYER ON THE TEAM IS A CHAMPION QUALITY GUY and I KNOW PENQUINS WIN AGAIN THURSDAY. Great game ahead with a worthy opponent.

  32. whlskey - Mar 19, 2012 at 1:37 AM

I wonder if NBC likes the Penguins at all, and if Pierre McGuire plays with his wienus behind the boards while he talks about Crosby the entire game..? And has anyone else ever noticed Crosby looks a lot like Butthead, cause I have.

  33. lasallehockey81 - Mar 19, 2012 at 12:07 PM

When did the definition of “bandwagon fan” go from “person who only watches the team when they’re doing well” to “person who remains loyal to the team but complains about the drastically underperforming, high priced free agent until he stops underperforming”?
