Burke and every Leafs fan would like nothing more than to get an elite playmaking guy to centre Kessel. That’s a lot easier said than done though.

yeah that is very true and if it comes down to it they can put him on a line with 2 other forwards that are good in the neutral zone as well as defensively to cover up any inadequacies kessel brings in those zones. the other 2 guys need to be able to pass the puck to him as well.

Just a thought: obviously not going to happen, but imagine Kessel playing alongside Jason Spezza, Big Joe, Claude Giroux, ect. Get him someone that can feed him the puck. Not to say bad things about Lupul, but he’s more of a scorer than a playmaker. If Burke would open his eyes for once and look at the big picture. Kessel is doing at 24 years old, with no “real” playmaker on his line. God knows what this kid could do with a “real” playmaker alongside him, 40-50 goals?.

Trading him still doesn’t make a lot of sense. He’s still only 24 years old, I’m sure he could figure out how to at the very least not be a defensive liability.

he hasn’t played defense or backchecked his entire life, its not going to start now. sorry but that is the sad truth. he is good at what he does and not much else. one trick pony.

This doesn’t make any sense. The guy is our leading scorer, top 5 in the league. He’s not a cancer or a useless player or anything of that nature. This offseason Carlyle needs to drive it into his head to backcheck more and play some better defense.

It is true that Kessel is not a leader or a player to rebuild around. That much should have been obvious BEFORE Burke traded for him. He is the kind of player a contender adds for some more firepower, NOT the sort of player a rebuilding team makes its core player.

The arguments can be made either way about trading him, but they are irrelevant. Burke will never trade Kessel because it is against his nature as he is tempermentally unsuited to a bottom up rebuild and to admitting that he was wrong.

So they gave up a king’s ransom to the Bruins to get a player that, two solid All-Star caliber years later, they should get rid of and start over again? Because he doesn’t fit the style of the head coach you just hired a couple of weeks ago?

Toronto fans, please be honest with me, what is it exactly that keeps you from forming pitchfork-and-torch mobs outside the ACC? Really, if any team has reason to riot, you guys should be it.
