A rule change like this will alter the game a lot, and have little to no effect on scoring in the long run. The simple fact is any minor change like this will quickly be met by a strategy to counter it. Even calling more penelties won’t do anything long term because players will get better at avoiding taking them. Not to mention there are already far too many weak, or complete phantom calls as it is.

There is only ONE thing the NHL can do to make a noticable, and sustained increase in goal scoring… make the nets bigger. Its really that simple. If you REALLY want more goals, that is the only way to do it. Of course every season and record after such a change would have to come with an asterisk, but its all about goal scoring, the sport be damned right? Obviously I reallllly hope the NHL never decides to do it… but they have experimented with it, and I wouldn’t put anything past the goal obsessed league right now.

How about no?

Last nights game was a lot of fun to watch. It didn’t lack speed, and certainly didn’t lack scoring. Not to mention there was already SEVEN minor penelties in the game, which means a full 1/4 of the game was played with one team a man down. When does it stop? Will you or the league not be happy untill teams are just taking turns playing a man down? After all, that would increase scoring wouldn’t it… and scoring is what its all about right? It couldn’t ever just be about the sport of hockey could it?

friend … the “superman capes” idea is absolutely true ! … I listened to it being discussed here in Vancouver one afternoon back in the winter of 2004, on our local talk-show radio station (ie: CKNW-98) … the topic that day was a list of suggestions which had emerged from one of the team owner’s meetings at which they were brain-storming for ways to “sex up” the game, etc … now I don’t recall which “particular” owner tabled the Superman capes idea, even though it had to have been one one of the sunbelt owners, I would imagine ? … but I do remember it very distinctly, as I was left laughing out loud “uncontrollably” for some time after ! … I remember that other less “insane” suggestions from that meeting included: 1) enlarging the nets .. 2) reducing the number of skaters from 6 to 5 during regulation time .. 3) moving the blue-lines out another 10-12 feet .. 4) allowing players to equip their helmets with “2-way” radio headsets … etc .. etc … again, if I suspect that most “if not all” of these idiotic ideas, were from the minds of the so-called “sunbelt” team owners ?

ps: I usually come to this website for just a “good time” … but on this one, I’m being “very” serious … at any rate, thank God that none of that crap ever happened, eh ? …

How about you call obstruction like your supposed to? Safety will always be an issue but these guys knew what they were signing up for

this is, indeed, true. that same year, several GM’s were on board for small rockets attached to the skates as standard apparel for all skaters on the ice.

this seems like a strange rule to bring in. would the ringette really do that much? not sure how many long passes come from behind the circles. that would be enforcing such a small percentage of passes that it doesn’t even make sense?

REMEMBER THE “SUPERMAN CAPES” IDEA ?

I remember from the ’04-05 lockout when these clowns were searching for ways to “sex” up the game, etc … that one suggestion by some brilliant GM that “capes” become standard team wear … the idea was that Superman-type capes would “enhance and accentuate” the appearance of the game in motion ! … it sounds funny now, but I do recall that it was apparently given some serious consideration at the time…

To change the rules now would hammer a lot of teams. Puck possession teams would transition alright, but teams like the Leafs that have been building small and fast in order to use the stretch pass will be screwed and have to rebuild their roster again!

Please, GM’s, no two line passes of any kind.
Want more scoring? I saw about 20 obstruction penalties not called in the Ranger- Hurricane game last night. How about just go back and enforce the clutching and grabbing rules better?
