Semin has played considerably better under the new coach, Dale Hunter, taking almost no penalties and he has adjusted better than many other players to the new defensive system. In fact, he’s been the teams best 2-way forward for the last couple of months. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new contract of some type but team has already said they will not negotiate contracts with any UFA until the end of the season. It’s not just Semin. The Caps have several UFA’s. Depending on how the season ends, they will have some leeway to sign some and not others.

I don’t think he wants to go back to the KHL. There’s no surprise that Jagr, Radulov, Nabokov, Filatov, etc, are coming back. The KHL is a chop-shop. Defective planes, players dying on the ice, terrible doctors, carrying your own bag, freezing your ass off in Siberia….I’ll take the crab juice.

Suter/Weber will cost huge $$$$ of overpayment. Those contracts rarely pan out as good deals long term.

Id take Parise over Semin yes but I’d keep Semin for 1 or 2 at virtually anything. 3-4 yrs? He’ll need to take less..5-ish probably.

Also, how much of Webers game is due to Nashville’s system? He might look a little more exposed in a more up tempo risk taking setting….not that he wouldnt be good obviously.

Whoever gave this a thumbs down is a complete moron! How can you honestly say that you’d rather keep Mike Green than get Suter or Weber? Green, when healthy, is good offensively and average, at best, on defense. Weber is a GREAT defensive defenseman and is one of those players that makes everyone around him better…. Imagine the line of Alzner and Weber/Suter…. SHUTDOWN CITY,

Semin was part of a large group of Russian players on the Caps that he was very comfortable playing with. At one point there were 5 (Semin, Ovechkin, Kozlov, Varlamov, and Federov), but now there are 2 and both are under immense scrutiny. The Caps are hopin his recent play continues and then they may reward him with another contract. As for his KHL options, he was very open to that since he has had trouble integrating into the American public, especially in Ovechkins shadow. Id bet he either resigns in Washington or departs back to the KHL.

There were rumors linking the Isles with Semin last offseason. No doubt, if there was any substance to them, it was part of a scheme to reach the cap floor. Not crazy about Semin, but he’d be a better solution to the cap floor issue than Rolston was or Gomez likely would have been. A lot would depend on the price. One possibility would be a simple swap of UFA forwards, PA Parenteau for Semin. Both are RWs capable of racking up points but are both prone to undisciplined play as PA recently showed in the game against the Devils at the Coliseum.

wouldnt pay him a dime over 4.5 million per year on a 4 year deal, If he’s doesn’t like it he can walk.
