To the occasional hockey viewer the game is confusing enough. I think having different rules for each conference would only make it seem more confusing. I'm all for getting rid of the trapezoid, though.

As you said, in baseball there's not as much inter-league play as there is inter-conference play in the NHL. Having the rules change for teams on such an arbitrary basis would probably yield misleading results - either good or bad. Imagine playing one night against a Western Conference team where there's no trapezoid but the icing rule is still a touch-up one, then the next night playing an Eastern Conference team where there's hybrid icing - but hey! - the trapezoid is back. It'd be confusing and frustrating for the players, coaches, and the fans.

Try it in the AHL as itsallniceonice says, or test it in pre-season games. That'd be the way to go with these changes.

So baseball has the DH in one league and not the other, along with Bean balls in one and not the other.

I always thought they should try out the rule changes with the conferences each getting one rule and not the other, and playing it out over 1 season to see how it goes. I know baseball is vastly different than hockey, and the East and West play more often than AL and NL, but i always thought it was a really good way to see if things are better with or without a rule, or even try it in the preseason.

For example, East Conference gets no-touch icing, West gets the Trapezoid removed ( or Fighting, this stupid red line idea, or 10 min overtime with 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 )

Dont have to throw everything away for it, you get a solid amount of data and results from it, and nobody cries if you change it back after a season
