Vancouver making plans to avoid another riot

If the Sedins keep playing the way they’ve been playing, Vancouver won’t have to worry about another Stanley Cup riot.

But just in case the Canucks make it to the finals again, The Province reports steps are being taken to avoid a repeat of June 15’s smashy-smashy-burny-burny fiasco.

“We all want to ensure a fun atmosphere during the playoffs, but obviously it’s not going to be the same as last year,” said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.

No, obviously it won’t.

For starters, the city’s decided against the “cram thousands upon thousands of wasted fans into a city block with nary a cop to be seen” strategy. They’ll be going with smaller venues this time around, with ticket-only outdoor events.

Stopping trainloads of young suburbanites from streaming into the downtown core is another objective. Most rioters, at least the ones that were charged, came from outside Vancouver. And they brought their alcohol along.

“We need to stop people from getting on the train with alcohol, to stop people getting out of the train with alcohol,” said deputy city manager Sadhu Johnston.

No specific plans to keep revelers from flooding downtown in June were provided, though trading Cody Hodgson was probably a good start.

Wow only took them 9 months to come up with a plan… oh wait they already had this happen in 94 and 2010… so lets recalculate it took 3 damaging riots over the course of 17 years for Vancouver to figure out hey maybe we need to do something about these riots… WHAT A JOKE!

    • kitshky - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:10 PM

While I’ll agree the Provincial and City Government is to blame here I’m a lil confused ….1994, 2010, and 2011? Three riots?

As a lifelong resident I know there’s a ton of morons in this city, but while the blame lies almost primarily in the Mayors office but the lesson they should learned was next time the Police hand you a report from 17 years agop detailing what you should do to prevent a riot …you should read it.

For the record my memory sits at 2 riots 17 years apart, am I off here?

      • terminalcityhockey - Mar 8, 2012 at 5:13 PM

The 2010 “riot” vfs13 is referencing was the brief scrum at the start of the Olympics were the protesters smashed some windows of the Bay…

The Mayor (and many other Vancouverites) was wrongly convinced that the people would be well-behaved after all the large scale celebrations that had happened on Granville St during the Olympics and after several key victories in the 2011 playoff run.

My disappointment lies not in the government & police response, but rather the inaction fellow fans to self-police the rioters as it all started.

A – Im not buyin one or two instances acted out by professional protesters as a “Vancouver riot”

B – If you honestly believe that people not stepping in to stop drunken rioters is the issue then you weren’t there …or you’ve never heard of Youtube,.

      • viewsfromseat13 - Mar 9, 2012 at 11:53 PM

Please dont turn a blind eye to the simple fact that Vancouver proved itself to be vast unprepared and that it took this long for guidelines to show up… Also lets add that I feel there are other cities and college programs that seemed to be woefully unprepared as well…

      • kitshky - Mar 11, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Blind eye? Do you even read other peoples posts or do you just like repeating yourself? I said it was the City’s fault, they had a report sitting available for the past 15 years and this current administration chose to not even read it. Whether it was arrogance or an attempt to sway public opinion on their side with the election coming up within half a year, they ignored almost every suggestion and recommendation given to them and that puts the blame almost exclusively on the Mayors office.

My issue with your post was you falsely stating that there was 3 riots and that there wasnt any study or report on how to deal with the possibility of things going awry again. That part of your post … was completely inaccurate.

Got to prevent fans from rioting after they get swept in the first round.

  3. drewsylvania - Mar 8, 2012 at 3:32 PM

They’ll probably attempt to riot regardless of whether they win the Cup or not.

    • drewsylvania - Mar 8, 2012 at 3:42 PM

You seriously think they wouldn’t riot if they won? It’d be an even bigger “excuse” than losing in the Finals.

  4. hsnepts - Mar 8, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Bout time the nucks lost in the first round. Hasnt happened since 03-04.

  5. kitshky - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:15 PM

Hey … we’re not Montreal, Maryland, or LA here!

    • 8man - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Whoa! What did I miss? What happened in Maryland that rivals the civil unrest of last June?

      • kitshky - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:38 PM

Nah it wasn’t thaats bad but I was jus quickly tryin to think of fans who rioted over a win (Uni Basketball Championship)

Canuck Fan’s are like their team, they are who they are – Over Hyped, Over Liqoured & Over Confident!!!

    • drewsylvania - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:19 PM

      You forgot “Over Rated”.

      • kitshky - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:36 PM

        That’s a lil much..

  7. ikillchicken - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Chicago lost 8 of 11 in March before winning the cup. The Pens lost 7 of 11 in February, then won the cup. The Red Wings lost 10 of 11 in February and then won the cup. The Ducks lost 17 of 25 following the all-star break before they won the cup.

But yeah, you guys go ahead and keep flailing about how the Canucks are totally gonna get knocked out in the first round.

  8. 8man - Mar 8, 2012 at 4:27 PM

This is still a good hockey team that is playoff bound and has a shot at the President’s Trophy (again). They could win the West, if Detroit stumbles. I don’t care to speculate beyond that.

  9. haterzgonahate - Mar 8, 2012 at 5:20 PM

Brough.. seriously… what does this have to do with hockey anymore? keep this story in the local news papers for the people that care to not forget about it.. seems like it’s all just troll food here.

    • thearabiangoat - Mar 8, 2012 at 6:25 PM

Really? You expected more from Brough? Him and his talent-less hack of a partner turned a picture of 4 Chicago Blackhawk’s players topless, in a limo into a $30k year job re-posting other people’s work and calling it “analysis.” This is par for the course for these guys, it is the depth of their ‘hockey knowledge.”

      • kitshky - Mar 8, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Well …that and a hilarious Blog for the Vancouver Province and regular spots on Team 1040.

(gotta say thats the first hate I’ve ever heard for the Kurtenblog … )

      • taytay099 - Mar 8, 2012 at 7:22 PM

If you have a problem with their writing then why do you read and comment here? Shouldn’t you be drawing pictures of rainbows or something?

PS. They also made fun of Mike Commodore topless in a pile of money so it’s not like they single out topless Chicago players only.

      • geo91 - Mar 8, 2012 at 9:11 PM

Maybe you should write for the site instead? Get a life guy

      • drewsylvania - Mar 9, 2012 at 9:21 AM

And we comment on it. We keep it going.

  10. blomfeld - Mar 9, 2012 at 1:11 AM

“A dog only bites when it knows that it’s safe to bite” …

that friends, is not only the credo of our canine friends, but the credo for “all” creatures and life forms … the bottom line is therefore quite simple for our fair city of Vancouver … if the “out of town” scum wish to again re-engage in carnage & mayhem this spring, then let it be that the “consequences” of their actions will rue them to their dying days !

    • kitshky - Mar 9, 2012 at 3:02 AM

You bloody nut job …ha ha

      I love this post.

  11. buffalomafia - Mar 9, 2012 at 4:27 AM

Don’t worry they won’t make it past second round of the playoffs!
