Briere says he was only trying to pump Bryzgalov’s tires

Monday we passed along a article in which Danny Briere said Ilya Brygalov had “actually been a great teammate” lately – the inference being Bryzgalov hadn’t been a great teammate the whole time.

Also contained in the article was the following paragraph:

Briere said that guys sat Bryzgalov down and told him he needed to redirect the focus off himself and onto the team.

It didn’t paint the most serene picture of life in the Philadelphia dressing room, and since then it’s been an operation in damage control.

First was Briere, as reported by “I was trying to pump his tires and trying to be positive, and obviously people try to read between the lines… Bryz has been great and he’s playing awesome – and we need him to keep playing that way. He makes us all look better.”

Peter Laviolette did some firefighting, too. The coach told 97.5 the Fanatic (via he was unaware any players had spoken to Bryzgalov, though he wouldn’t say a sit-down didn’t happen.

As for Briere’s comments?

“In talking to Danny that’s not what he meant,” said Laviolette. “(It was) the way the article was written and the way it came across…you know how it works: they get in there, there’s a scrum, you talk for five minutes and they might take 15 seconds, 20 seconds, they might take the words that they want and the sentences that they want. I’m not saying that they made up something — they didn’t — but a lot of times you can take what you want and use it in context of a story that you have in your mind or whatever.”

Whichever angle you believe, we wouldn’t be talking about this if Bryzgalov didn’t have such a unique personality. It’s one of the pitfalls of signing a guy who the cameras and microphones adore.

This whole thing is a non-story that was manufactured by Tim Panaccio, who like most Philadelphia Flyers beat reporters, enjoys creating gossip and drama more than he enjoys talking about hockey.

Thanks for the thumbs down, Tim!

Briere has a history of being a questionable teammate.

    • firstandonlywarning - Mar 8, 2012 at 12:42 PM

      Awwwwww facts hurt huh?
Funny coming from a group of people who bash the French constantly.

Ask Danny’s ex wife about his loyalty and what type of team commitment he has, lol.
Danny B is so typically the selfish and entitled French hockey player its unreal.

7 thumbs down from 6 philly fans and 1 Montreal fan who supports any French player.

I do wanna say I get a kick out of how little you people know about your players.
      Especially you Philly fans

Most of yas didn’t know that Jeff Carter and Richards did blow WAY too often and WAY too public.

Or that Carter was busted fooling around with Hartnells wife, and that the Briere divorce was all tied into the moves made in the offseason.

      Thumbs down to reality

      • hartsy19 - Mar 8, 2012 at 1:26 PM

I gave you a thumbs down because you have no idea what you’re talking about. Briere’s divorce has NOTHING to do with his ability to be a good teammate. And I, as a “Philly fan”, did know about the Carts/Richie party fiasco, as well as the Carts/Hartsy wife ordeal, what does that have to do with Briere again? Get outta here.

Oh yeah, and my 12 year old brother says LOL.

      • sheckyrimshot - Mar 8, 2012 at 2:07 PM

i can’t speak for the reason briere got divorced but from what i understand, the reason it was so long and drawn out was because he wanted to retain custody of his kids.

for the past few years he has offered to let both giroux and couturier live in his house to help ease their transition to the nhl. both have remarked on how invaluable experience this has been. what a bad teammate.

almost every time i hear briere’s name outside of hockey it’s because of some kind of charity fundraising event. it’s called briere’s bunch or something. check it out. facts hurt lol.

as for carter and richards not being on the team, i think it had a little more to do with their off ice party habits on wet island than briere’s divorce. i haven’t checked the stats in a while, how’s hartsy doing this year now that carter and richards are gone? he doin alright?

tim panaccio has a history of being a questionable journalist.

  4. icelovinbrotha215 - Mar 8, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Yea I hope this is just Panoch just looking for a story. Danny B has always come off as a class act in Philly. The only way to get ride of this story: start scoring some goals! Danny B is in one of his worst career slumps.

    • firstandonlywarning - Mar 8, 2012 at 12:52 PM

      LOL @ this

Small player with heart gets a pass despite making “im only thinking of myself and not the consqences of what im saying” more than once.

Pure class that Briere is cheating on his wife with pornstars (gina lynn, who banged a ton of Flyers last year)

      Lets overlook that too
Thumbs down to the truth cause it hurts so so much

      • icelovinbrotha215 - Mar 8, 2012 at 12:58 PM

Haha their are many guys who are like that in the NHL. I don’t know Briere personally. I dare to venture that you don’t either. I’m not going to follow the TMZ of NHL players to find out what they do and who they are with. All I know is that, based on what I have heard, he seems like a classy guy. Maybe he isn’t. Not my problem. You seem to have an axe to grind with Briere hahaha.

      • whlskey - Mar 8, 2012 at 3:47 PM

I guess you never heard the other side of this story, the one in which Briere’s ex actually cheated on him first with some fireman, and then they decided to get separated. How do I know such things might you ask, because my father is a firefighter in the same township Briere lived with his family and still lives in to this day. Once separated, which is what most people do before they get divorced, especially when kids are involved, is when he began banging pornstars and any other hot, young, vagina that came his way.. Have you ever even seen Briere’s ex..? I have, and I can’t say I blame him for wanting to bang pornstars and any other sexy, young broad that came his way after having to deal with that woman for most of his life.

  5. firstandonlywarning - Mar 8, 2012 at 1:06 PM

Im trying to figure out this word “class” you people throw around.

Not classy in his personal life
Not classy when it comes from hockey because as I said, this isn’t the 1st time Danny has made comments that he either.

    A) Wasn’t thinking
    B) Was thinking but doesn’t have that lil voice telling him not to say what he is thinking to reporters

How many times has Briere swung his stick at another players head in frustration? More than once

Like I said, small player with heart gets a pass from so many people when the reality is that there is a ton of evidence that Briere is not the best guy or teammate.

  6. dmacirish - Mar 8, 2012 at 1:20 PM

hey firstanonlywarning – any chance you are briere’s ex-wife? i mean kind of seems like you are not all that thrilled with briere and “know” a significant amount about him.

    • ml3939 - Mar 8, 2012 at 1:53 PM

I am guessing he is either Briere’s ex-wife or one the Montreal fans that so vehemently boo Briere whenever the Flyers play in Montreal.

You clearly have some ulterior motive here… We bash the French constantly. That is so 10 years ago. No one cares about the French enough to bash them… Thanks for the tidbit on Richards and Carter indulging in the nose candy. My whole perspective on what I know about hockey players doing in their spare time has been turned upside down thanks to you. You are bound to be mentioned in sentences with Woodward, Bernstein and the WikiLeaks guy. Some government in this world should be pounding on your door to garner the services of such a super sleuth… I also don’t know Briere as well as you but for such and awful man to get custody of his children in a judicial system that rarely sways that way is pretty incredible.

      • firstandonlywarning - Mar 8, 2012 at 7:59 PM

Im guessing you guys think Briere taking part in married men banging porn stars is great for the team huh?

All those bad feelings in the locker room, forcing the Flyers to clean house is CLASSY and sign of GREAT leadership.

The only reason why Danny is still a Flyer is nobody wanted his contract

OPPS more reality for you casual fans.

Yup, What a Classy guy and good teammate that Danny Briere is……
But again, that’s why they are the Flyers and haven’t won jack in ages, while the Red Wings would NEVER take players like Richards, Carter and Briere.

Want a lesson is class, check out the Wings.

Ohhhhh wait a second I understand
People in Philly are Clueless when it comes to class, because they are from Philly.
Yes, comparing Briere to your average Philly Fan, he is full of class.

When I speak of Class Im thinking Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Lidstrom and you know actual classy people.

Not guys out banging wh0res at the club doing lines off strippers cleavage, ending in divorce and a break up of the team

  7. danphipps01 - Mar 8, 2012 at 2:21 PM

Here’s hoping Breezy pumps yours, eh, Danny? Judging by your general uselessness lately, you could probably use it. Six assists in twenty games? Pathetic.

    • hartsy19 - Mar 8, 2012 at 2:37 PM

Agreed. Other than his hat-trick, he’s been invisible since the All-star break

  8. drunkbro - Mar 8, 2012 at 11:05 PM

when i read firstandonlywarning’s comments, i hear a prepubescent 8th grader. is this the same loser with the malkin, staal, kunitz, and neal names that spams this site?
