Don’t look now, but the Kings are scoring goals

Mar 7, 2012, 2:32 PM EDT

LA Kings

The Los Angeles Kings have to be pleased with their recent run of offense. They’ve played seven games since Feb. 21 and scored a whopping 23 goals over that span, an average of 3.28 per contest.

For most teams, that’s a nice surge in goalscoring

For L.A., it’s Krakatoa.

To put the recent 23-goal binge in perspective, the Kings scored 22 goals from Jan. 15 to Feb. 18 — a span of 14 games. That included shutout losses to St. Louis, Phoenix and Calgary and one-goal outings against Edmonton, Calgary, Colorado, Carolina, Florida and the New York Islanders.

One would naturally tie LA’s newfound offense to the acquisition of Jeff Carter, but that’s not entirely accurate. He only has two goals (zero assists) since coming over from Columbus five games ago, and both were scored in a 4-2 win over Anaheim.

That said, Carter’s presence has made a difference. He’s teamed with Mike Richards and Dwight King to give the Kings a dangerous second line, which in turn has made life easier for the top group of Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown and Justin Williams. At no time was that more evident than in Tuesday’s 5-4 win over Nashville — the Kopitar-Brown-Williams trio combined for four points as L.A. tied its season-high for goals in a single game.

Of course, scoring isn’t just about the guys up front.

“Our defensemen scored two goals by getting shots through, getting it past the first guy,” Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter said after the Nashville win. “That really was the difference. Our defense was more involved offensively than they have been.”

That’s been the case for the last while. Over the last seven games, Drew Doughty has three goals, Willie Mitchell has five assists while Matt Greene and Slava Voynov each have three points. It’s an impressive display considering GM Dean Lombardi dealt away a talented offensive defenseman in Jack Johnson to acquire Carter.

Add it all up, and you’ve got a Kings team surging at the right time. They’re currently on 74 points — the same as eighth-place San Jose — and very much alive in the wild Pacific Division chase. Current leaders Dallas (77 points) are just two up on Phoenix and three clear of both the Sharks and Kings.

    No Kings hater posts yet?

“No Kings hater posts yet ?” …

No there aren’t friend … and quite, frankly there shouldn’t be any haters either … after all, what have we done wrong ? The fact of the matter is that our Los Angeles Kings are an exciting and explosive team, which is finally starting to catch fire at the right time … Go Kings ! :)

Blommy! So you managed you pull the old laptop out from under the rocker? (see below). 😉

Where’s that guy that usually has those long winded posts about ho everyone should fear the Kings then ends every sentence with “!!!!!”? I’m sure he has plenty to say about how his team is perfect this year.

He also usually posts an Elvis song which makes even less sense.

Let’s not forget some truly baffling uses of quotation marks, either.

      • blomfeld - Mar 7, 2012 at 11:05 PM

SANGFROID ! … “Coolness and composure, especially in trying circumstances” …

I’ll have you know comrade Phipps, that that was the credo of the British Army for centuries … despite a withering fire of volleys from a fast approaching enemy, the British “soldier of foot” would never ever for a second consider breaking rank and running or firing prematurely … no sir ! … rather, he would wait until he could see the whites of their eyes .. and even then he wouldn’t fire until the order was given !

and so it is with us LA Kings fans … we don’t break rank and run when the going get’s tough or our prospects look dim … instead, we LA KIngs fans look to “close rank” and press home the attack with even greater zeal ! … to you and others, that may seem like a foreign or alien concept ? … but to us, that is the way we are and we’re proud for it !

That would be “Blomfeld”. His old lady caught him blogging instead of pruning the maples as he had promised, so she hid the laptop in the attic with mother.

        “I LOVE YOU” …

despite the fact that I’m very much at liberty here to counter with some venomous, cowardly, electronic response … instead I will offer you this simple Christian rebuttal … the kicker is however, that in reality “you and I” squaring off would probably be akin to the heel of a jackboot coming down on the head of some unknowing ant …

I’ve never said that the Los Angeles Kings are perfect. What I’ve said, is that it was just a matter of time before they break out and show themselves for what they really are … an “exciting and explosive” team which ought not to be saddled with any reservations or doubt … that’s all I’ve been saying …

I still think this team has a long way to go before they become a real threat. Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re pretty good, but I believe you’re hyping a team with a lot of problems. They shouldn’t have let go of Ryan Smyth and now their powerplay has suffered quite a bit without him. I also think that trade for Carter was horrible. Why trade a truly gifted offensive player like Johnson for an under performing forward with motivational issues like Carter? They also lack some good bottom 6 players which is vital to having a long Cup run.

Also, I wasn’t trying to offend you with my earlier post. I like your enthusiasm for your team and was poking fun at you in hopes of getting another long post followed with a song.

your analysis of our LA Kings is excellent … losing Jack Johnson was not good, no two way about it … but I do have a serious feeling that despite that, “good times” now lay ahead for us Kings fans !… yes, of course Carter was a parasite in Columbus, notwithstanding what he did before with the Flyers, etc … but we’re turning a new page here man and so anything’s possible ! … so who’s to say that Carter doesn’t now go “berserk” and finally reach for his true potential ? … you’ve gotta admit, we’ve got the best goalie in the league in comrade Quick and we’ve also got the best “untapped” offense in the west, let alone the league perhaps … no ?

at any rate, I’m inclined to offer you this excellent video, which directly addresses the King’s and us’ fans “current” feelings:

they’re not in the playoff picture just yet. not getting my hopes up so fast

    • blomfeld - Mar 7, 2012 at 10:41 PM

No friend, we’re not there yet … but as God is my witness, we’re getting there ! :)

to he who calls himself “Rainyday56” …

no doubt you mean well friend and that your remarks are not made in the spirit of malice or trickery ? … I therefore offer you the following “poignant” number by the King, which is seriously one of my all-time favorites … please enjoy and God bless you …

Just as Elvis is the King, so is this Mike Halford a “quality” correspondent !

of course none of us know what’s going to happen … but it sure is refreshing to see a decent, God-fearing, values-driven reporter like Mike Halford call it like it is ! … the Kings are indeed on the upswing, no two ways about that … and therefore “praise be” I say that someone like comrade Halford has chosen to report that which is undeniably so !

  6. cmutimmah - Mar 8, 2012 at 12:18 PM

Blomfeld hasn’t commented on this thread in 12 hours… quick, someone file a missing persons report!

I like the Kings, but they aren’t going to beat any of the Central Division teams if they can’t score…

    • blomfeld - Mar 8, 2012 at 11:23 PM

No need for alarm friend ! … but thanks for your concern :)

Hey man, it’s good to hear you’re a Kings fan too ! … I just got in and I see that we lost to the Jackets tonight ? … that’s a shame, as we need every point from here on in, especially if we’re going to still catch the Canucks … it’s okay though, as I’m sure we’ll bounce back convincingly in our next game …
