Actually for teams that may have a hard time hitting the threshold of the salary cap Scott Gomez is a very valuable commodity. You take a cap hit of 15 million over the next two years, but you actually are only, loosely used term, pay him 10 million. So a team in that situation will get credit for 5 million against the cap and spend not but one penny. Kind of sad, but so true.

Neither is a perfect player, but both could help and would cost little or nothing in assets. A gamble as to how either player would turn out. Rolston’s 10-11 numbers were better than Hunts for both previous seasons combined. Main problems with MTL & Gomez were what they gave up for him and his contract. Neither would’ve been an issue for the Islanders.

Just what the Isles would have needed… Another soft player with no grit or heart. I’d rather have players like Cizikas who give everything they have on every shift playing then another teams problem.

You could probably get more for $5m than Scott Gomez has had to offer this year, but you probably couldn’t get that player for nearly nothing on the trade market.

Still I’d probably take Gomez over say a player like Brian Rolston.

Gomez’s main issue until this year has been that he has been a vastly overpaid 2nd line center who had decent production numbers. The ridiculous salary actually would be a benefit to the Isles who need a good 2nd line center until Ryan Strome is ready and need help reaching the cap floor. Some unthinking fans might shake their heads at that, but it would actually have been a good move hockey and cap-wise…depending on what, if anything it would have cost the Isles in assets.
