I used to really like him but the past 4 or 5 years I’ve thought of him as pompous when he starts going on about “our game” and when he does his ambush interviews. Maybe being seperated from the senile old man would breath new life in him, but right now I think of him as a guy who’s stuck around too long and started placing himself higher than the game.

Your argument is nothing more than the dissemination of a poorly conceived opinion, one based not on any fact but rather on the very principle you are deriding Canadians for: xenophobia and a baseless fear of “others” rooted in ignorance.

The two situations you speak of do nothing to make your point any more convincing. Generalizing all Canadians based on what Don Cherry says or does is simply illogical. Any Canadian or American who displays a lower level of bigotry than yourself will confirm this. As for the Montreal coaching situation, I’ve already explained why that is another issue altogether.

You haven’t substantially or successfully proved your point in any way. All you’ve done is name two events and claimed they represent Canadian society as a whole despite offering any connection between these events and Canadian society.

Canadians are fearful of outsiders. They are closed nations and rarely tolerate non-citizens to be successful. The examples in the NHL are simply a microcosm for an entire nation. These two situations are the hockey related facts which I present and seem substantially successful in proving the point. If you fail to acknowledge them perhaps it is time to look within.

I’d love to know what you’re basing that on. I know a lot of Canadians and none are xenophobic. We’re generally a tolerant nation when it comes to other people’s beliefs, customs, etc. America, on the other hand, seems to equate anti-Islamic sentiment with patriotism. So which country out of the two is really the xenophobic one?

As for the Habs’ coaching situation, it may seem stupid to us but it’s hardly an example of “typical Canadian xenophobia.” The French have been fighting to preserve their culture in Quebec for ~200 years. This “controversy” is nothing new or out of the ordinary.

What are you talking about? It is Canada’s sport, and the fact a “Canadian team” has not won the cup is irrelevant. Canada leads the NHL with most players at 504. Number two is the US With 223. Third is Sweden With 67 and so on.
Even the 2011 champion bruins have 16 Canadians on their roster.

@Leafs fans, why are there no Ontario guys on the team? Is this common or just worked out that way this year? Sinden was anti-european players for a number of years after they really started to get in to the league, as a result Boston was well behind the curve drafting off the new talent pool. I can’t imagine Burke having any issues with Ont players like Sinden (I soooo don’t miss Sinden) did with the European guys.

Cherry is a colorful character in the hockey world and I’d hate to see him go, love having HNIC down here now, thanks NHLN!!

Chiadam it’s been since 93 FYI and last I checked a team is the players not the city that it’s played in most US city teams have a large number of Canadian born players. When your in the dressing room a good player is a good player no matter where he’s from.If a guy is from Idaho or Saskatoon has got my back and we have chemistry and we are winning who gives a %#*| where he’s from. Grapes had a point for TV not in reality take the programs out of the stands and see if anyone knows where anyone’s from it doesn’t matter as long as the teams winning

This is why I hate listening to Canadians talk about hockey. When it comes to hockey, they’re a nation of obsessive hockey dads / moms. They claim the sport as their own (which should be fading since a Canadian team has not won a Cup in 300 years), but then go a step further and fight amongst themselves over their jewel. Just stop it. But what should I expect from a nation that puts Don Cherry on TV. He’s a clown of a dancing bear.
