It’s his own business when he isn’t under contract (a huge contract at that)

Uh, we’re talking about hockey bodies, here. You seriously think Freeney could play hockey at 6-1 268? Even Zdeno Chara maxed out at around 250–and he’s six inches taller than Ovechkin.

I think some of the comments here are pretty funny, but it’s not like he was fat by any stretch. Dude was huge, but it looked like muscle.

As McPhee said, he just liked crushing people….at the time, he was going to a lot of Redskins games and hanging out with Chris Cooley. I think he just thought he was a linebacker or tight-end or something.

Backstrom on the other hand….I think that pudgy Swede might need a bit more time on the bike and a bit less time eating meatballs.

I want to know who else is lazy other than some Russian players, so I can see whether the stereotype of the lazy Russian is truly accurate. All I can think of are guys like Kovalev & Yashin. Malkin’s obviously an exception to that rule, while Michael Ryder (before Dallas, apparently) was always an example of a guy who took shifts off and lived solely off his talent.

Wait…so Ovetchkin hasn’t been training? Wow. Players like St. Louis, Crosby, Toews, and Jagr do nothing but train because they want to be in peak condition at all times. This certainly corresponds with the suggestion that he’s more about the rockstar image of being a star player, and not the game itself.

From all reports and previous indications, Ovie tends to “sloph” around in the off-season, or at least has before. Guys can do what they want, but I always assumed that come time for training camp, guys should be pretty close to season conditioning and weight. I thought most of the teams in the league try to keep guys between certain weights during the year.

One could question his discipline or dedication during the golf season, but I guess that’s up for the Capitals organization to determine if he needs an off-season nutritionist to babysit him.

Shoot, at 6’4″ I played at 245-250# in high school. Must have really hurt the guys I put into the boards back in the day…

What Ovechkin weighs is his own business, I suppose- that’s pretty hefty, but I don’t have much room to talk, since I’m right around there myself (of course, I’m also taller than he is, but whatever).

But if McPhee, and others in the Caps organization, keep saying they’re happy with Hunter and content with the makeup of the team as it is right now… well, they’re either delusional or they aren’t watching hockey games.
