Ryan Malone explains why he lost it against Montreal

Feb 29, 2012, 2:46 PM EDT

Ryan Malone had a pretty epic outing in Tampa Bay’s 2-1 win over Montreal on Tuesday. He registered an assist, threw two hits and racked up 17 penalty minutes — including a rare aggressor game misconduct — trying to pound Habs defenseman Alexei Emelin.

Why the beef with Emelin? Let’s go to the video.

(For those wanting to jump ahead, here’s your FF guide:)

Malone hit on Emelin — 0:02
Emelin hit on Malone — 0:39
Malone jumps Emelin — 1:58

According to Damian Cristodero of, Malone wasn’t as displeased with the hit as he was with Emelin refusing to fight him.

“It’s not old school hockey, it’s pretty much hockey,” Malone said. ” If they feel they can take a cheap shot at someone and then not stand up for themselves, that’s the way they play. I think I always played fair where if I take a cheap shot at someone you have to kind of pay your dues.”

When told Emelin no longer fights because his face got smashed in and rebuilt with metal plates after a 2009 scrap in the KHL, Malone said that was T.S. (which stands for Tethered Swimming, of course.)

Lightning head coach Guy Boucher stood behind Malone with his post-game comments.

“The blind hit he got there, that’s extremely dangerous,” Boucher said. “He had no puck. The puck didn’t even come close to him; a blind-side hit with no puck. we’re just lucky Malone is that tough that he could take that check. He took care of his own business.”

One final note about the aggressor game misconduct call —  rule 46.2 describes it as “the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.”

Which, having re-watched the video, is a fairly accurate description.

Get OWNED kid! I don’t have a dog in the fight, but Malone had that dude rethinking his life for a second.

How was that hit blind-side or cheap?

    • drewsylvania - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:43 PM

To downthumbers: Where is the hit to the head? Or an elbow? And Malone was facing Emelin when the hit came in.

    • coreyw87 - Feb 29, 2012 at 5:12 PM

he didnt have the puck when he hit him. which is why it was an interference penalty.

    • vanchuk - Feb 29, 2012 at 10:18 PM

Certain similar events in the past have resulted in 4 game suspensions in the cup finals…interference, yes, interference.

The pass went right through Malone (he waved his stick at it, which negated the icing).

yea and it wasn’t late or anything.

  4. sportsfreak13 - Feb 29, 2012 at 3:49 PM

I’m siding with malone on this one. Emelin has the same amount of guts as pk suban, which is to say none.

  5. solador78 - Feb 29, 2012 at 3:51 PM

    Malone is trash.

    • sportsfreak13 - Feb 29, 2012 at 3:54 PM

so are the habs. Slewban anybody!

    • odj810 - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:37 PM

cheap hits are going to happen in the NHL. What I can’t stand is when you cheap shot someone and then don’t fight and pay the price for your action.

A guy who skates around with puck and his head down is trash.#1 rule keep your head up.thanks for the flash back of that sweet hit by bugsy.

    • solador78 - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:02 PM

      You mean like this?

  7. matthews4 - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Really HAB fans? If Lucic or Marchy did the same thing it would be classless. Oh they have a history, and I guess Emelin doesn’t? I really love how the spinning of hypocrisy works. You would think that after Chara took a puck to the face that required 17 stitches, and HAB fans cheered they would never have the audacity to call any other group classless. This is no different, Emelin should not put himself in a position to get the crap kicked out of him. It was an unnecessary hit at the least. That would lead to a fight in every league I played in.

    • drewsylvania - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:26 PM

I’m a Bruins fan, and I say this hit wasn’t cheap or blindside. And if you’re going to talk about unnecessary hits, I’d say a large number of clean hits aren’t “necessary”.

      • odj810 - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:39 PM

I’d say it was very late. I have no problem with the hit though if after the fact you stand up for it when challenged.

  8. drewzducks - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Cuz he’s a Hab, Emelin is clearly garbage. But as a Bruins fan I see NOTHING wrong with that hit on Malone. Just wish he had the stones to take on Malone. Even if he gets whupped he’d be a lot more respected in a lot of people’s eyes.

    • scottybcboy - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:44 PM

That is the crux of this whole conversation, IMO. The hit was a little cheap, Emelin was upset that he got hit, but not over the line suspendable. Emelin and Subban have got to realize that what makes them such dislikable players is that if you are going to be cheap you MUST answer the bell when another player takes offence to your hit. Say what you want about some other rats, Marchand, Lapierre, etc, but at least they will throw down and defend themselves and their actions.

  9. habsman - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Malone jumped Emelin from behind and started wailing on him. Maybe he’s auditioning for the Bruins. Thats their style.

  10. lsxphotog - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:44 PM

Sometimes people forget this is hockey and should stop being such pansies – fans and players alone.

  11. boltsfan777 - Feb 29, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Look, it’s very simple… Malone checked Emelin cleanly into the boards earlier, just after Emelin released the puck, so soon afterward Emelin crushes Malone into the ice as retaliation for the hit. True, it wasn’t blindside. The problem is Malone wasn’t close to the puck at the time or even recently, so he wasn’t expecting the interference hit. If you want to get even, fine, but do it when the guy has or just had the puck. It was the equivalent of a sucker punch.

  12. jrod691 - Feb 29, 2012 at 5:03 PM

Malone made a pretty cheap play when he tripped a Habs player at 0:26 of that video. Wonder if that had anything to do with it?

  13. ribs108 - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:13 PM

How hilarious is it that Subban was ‘sticking up’ for Emelin? Hey Malone, pick your turtle…and how ironic that the Habs have a player that “…no longer fights…”. Now, doesnt’ that just figure. Seems most of the roster may have had their “…faces smashed in and rebuilt with metal plates”. In any case, Malone had better watch himself as PK is sure to spit in his general direction at their next meeting.

  14. muttbolts - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Sounds like a bunch of crying hab fans. If any player threw a hit like that in any league, he better be on his toes. Has everyone got used to this nhl lite? Theres maybe a few players in the game today that wouldve lasted 15 yrs ago. And none play for the habs

  15. arbruins - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:28 PM

The habs and their fans are a class act…just ask them!

    • habsman - Feb 29, 2012 at 7:38 PM

      Thats funny.

  16. lordstanley65 - Feb 29, 2012 at 8:23 PM

I’m just surprised all the Habs players didn’t fall down and look for penalties. Flop City Central in Canada.
