It could open up more teams to a trade or the cap could go down more than anyone expects and make Nash's salary even more of an issue. Bit of a gamble. Honestly, if they do it now or later, I will be shocked if it works out in Columbus' favor. Nash is all the Jackets have. What free agent in his right mind would want to come to Columbus this off season without Nash there? The Jackets will have to offer a 25% salary premium to get anyone to come to Columbus that has another offer. Every guy in the NHL knows the Jackets won't be competitive next year. So, sign with Columbus only to become trade bait in February? Who the hell would want that? Even if they get a boatload of draft picks, nothing in their past indicates that they will pick well and/or develop the picks properly. McConnell, Howson, and Priest has set this team back another 10 years.

That (to paraphrase - "Howson is an 'assclown'") is a very compelling argument for Howson to trade him before the deadline, however I still believe the CBJ will be better served to wait until there are less restrictions (teams w/ less cap space and players they won't trade mid season) come summertime.

Just curious, what in the 11 year history of the Jackets, leads you to believe that Howson will do any better in the summer? Their skill at drafting? Their "amazing" free agent signings? Their "brilliance" in extending the contract of a rookie goalie that got destroyed in the only playoff series they were ever in and has been completely useless since? Nash is the only real asset they have and they have put the future of the franchise in the hands of assclowns that have been embarrassed by almost every move they have ever made. Do you expect that Howson will become a brilliant GM in a few months time? Have you ever worked at a job with a complete idiot and found that a couple more months made him the smartest guy in the business?

Yea.....C'mon! The CBJ are dumb. They should just lighten up and trade Nash to your favorite team for next to nothing! They definitely shouldn't wait til summer. That's no good for your team!

It's posturing and it's foolish. Here is a classic example of why Columbus is so bad year after year. Nash, despite the opinions of some folk here who clearly haven't watched him year in and out, is an amazingly talented player. He is a rare prize. But the owner, McConnell, left Howson in charge of the negotiations. Howson is a puppet GM controlled by the President, Mike Priest. The track record of both men speaks for itself. They have no standing, they command no respect at the negotiating table. It's like two rubes off the turnip truck acting like they own Vegas because they hold a pair of aces. The others teams can smell the desperation and are all too aware of the stupidity. What any normal, well run franchise would have done is made Craig Patrick the President and allowed him to pick a real GM. At bare minimum, you let Patrick handle the negotiations regarding Nash. Patrick may not be as well thought of as he once was, but at least he's not perceived as a drooling idiot like Howson and Priest are. Other GMs would be willing to work with Patrick because he has earned some respect. With Howson, it's like a boy at a table of men. They tolerate him because he has something of value. But they know he's nothing but a boy and as the deadline nears, one of them will do his best to pick Howson's pocket. Who here would be surprised to see the Jackets get robbed blind? Teams that are bad for a long period of time are that way for a reason. When you let idiots run the franchise, you get the last place team in the NHL. Not hard to figure out. Maybe, someday, Columbus will have an owner that grasps the obvious. I'm not holding my breath.
