Anyone interested in a Dustin Brown?

Feb 24, 2012, 7:00 AM EDT

Dustin Brown

TSN’s Bob McKenzie added an interesting name to the trade rumor mill yesterday after the Jeff Carter-for-Jack Johnson deal broke. The name? Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown.

According to McKenzie, Brown is “absolutely” being shopped by general manager Dean Lombardi, who may just be hoping to change the team’s culture as much as he’s hoping it can score the odd goal.

Brown has a very manageable cap hit ($3.175 million) on a contract that runs two additional seasons. The 27-year-old right winger is a four-time 20-goal scorer in the NHL, including a career-high 33 in 2007-08. He plays on the power play and the penalty kill, plus he leads the team in hits, with 215.

In other words, there will be plenty of suitors for Brown.

Not surprisingly, the TSN panelists were falling all over themselves to say he’d be a fit with the Leafs, and he probably would be. But a lot of teams could use a gritty top-six forward that can put the puck in the net.

In fact, we hear the Kings are quite interested.

I see him as a great fit in boston, even long term. Though what would it cost to get him is the question?

  2. joshuakorr - Feb 24, 2012 at 7:11 AM

I was thinking the same thing. This guy is everything that is positive about the Bruins identity, not the stuff that gets criticism, but the hardworking Bergeron kind of Bruin. He is the prototypical guy that would fit in a Claude Julien team.

  3. amerika1313 - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:11 AM

Was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the headline, too. Krejci for Brown? Krejci plus mid-level pick for Brown? Man, it would be huge for the Bruins if they could snag him…

    • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:23 AM

you cannot trade david kreci, Bruins fans and everyone else need to get that out of your head. We just signed kreci to an extension, what kind of precedent does that set for people wanting to sign here or sign extensions? it gives the team a bad rap throughout the league. David kreci isn’t going anywhere for another year.

      • amerika1313 - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:34 AM

Yeah, you’re probably right. It’s been encouraging to see him play wing and get more physically involved the last couple of games. When he’s on he’s something to see, but he’s been dragging lately… I guess I’m just trying to figure out who else would be a viable trade piece.

      • amerika1313 - Feb 24, 2012 at 9:38 AM

I’m hoping Chiarelli is looking at Brown, Chris Stewart, Okposo, or even like a Chimera-type guy. Maybe Ryan Smyth until the off-season, so he can head back to the Oilers. Again, what is he going to move to get one of them though?

      • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:09 AM

I agree i want one of those players, even a knuble. I just don’t see how it gets done, prices are high and we don’t really have anything to give up. I wouldn’t trade hamilton, and i don’t think our prospects really get it done in the trade aspect. Realisticly i don’t think were gonna get any top 6 guys. probably gonna end up adding a depth forward to challenge for a spot. We need the internal competition to battle who gets the healthy scratch. Caron is just not getting it done.

      • amerika1313 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Agreed. Hamilton and Rask are obviously the two most impressive pieces, but neither’s going anywhere. It wouldn’t matter with LA and Brown anyway, since the Kings seem pretty well set in net and with blueliners. Caron has been a bit of a disappointment, but maybe Camper/Hennessy/Caron can fill in the gaps until Peverley gets back for the playoffs. Still, any one of the above-mentioned guys would seem to be perfect fits for the B’s system and mindset. A guy can hope, can’t he?

      • dolanster - Feb 24, 2012 at 11:19 AM

Having lived in LA for a decade and watched the Kings a lot — Brown is NOT an upgrade from Krejci, trust me. Think Lucic with worse hands. He’s a good Bruin type guy, but would not crack the Bruins top 6 if everyone was healthy.

    • yoitsdabs - Feb 24, 2012 at 1:40 PM

Krejci is not going any where and Brown is unlikely to be in Boston but they will get a top 6 forward without trading tukka or hamilton. Caron and Corvo with a pick to dallas for Souray and Ryder will be back with the Bs.

      • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 2:03 PM

i know were not getting brown. But 1 ryder isn’t a top 6 forward on our team. 2 ryder has another 2 years left on his deal. that we will start to not be able to afford.3 why would dallas ever do that? they just signed ryder and he’s playing good for them. Corvo is a useless expiring contract. and caron doesn’t have very high of a ceiling

      • yoitsdabs - Feb 24, 2012 at 2:35 PM

You only make 1 decent point there and thats Ryders contract at this point without peverly and horton he is a top 6 forward or at least a top 4 wing on the bruins and dallas clearly thought they would be more competitive this year and although ryder is playing good for them, his stock is as high now as it will ever be. Corvo and Souray more or less cancel eachother out I think Souray fits the Bruins system better. And you have no idea how the stars value Caron and with a second round or even third round pick thrown in there it makes the gamble on Caron that much easier. As for Ryders contract, I think the Bruins are willing to except that if they think Ryder can give them a higher playoff seed and therefore a easier road to the cup.

Brown to the Pens… count on it

  5. broadstbully33 - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:20 AM

jvr for brown???? then get howson to flip johnson to the flyers…..bob. and pick for johnson

    • rtrlive - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:26 AM

The Kings are going want more than just JVR for Brown. Be a little more realistic.

  6. patsbruin1021 - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:24 AM

Brown to the bruins makes a lot of sense the bruins r deep at center n need winger help

  7. rtrlive - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:25 AM

1st rd pick, Eric Tangradi (prospect) Matt Niskanen and Tyler Kennedy for DUstin Brown

    • sportsfreak13 - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:57 AM

If the pens made that trade you would still have to clear some salary for the next couple years. Considering the kings just lost jack johnson i would do a combination of paul martin+pick/tangradi for brown but that still wouldnt work because they would want to replace the goals their going to lose when hes gone. Too expensive.

      • bihler7 - Feb 24, 2012 at 9:04 AM

sportsfreak, who would have to clear salary? Niskanen makes 1.5 and kennedy makes 2.0 which is more than what brown makes at 3.175. Martin would be too expensive for the Kings, unless they want him to replace willie mitchell who is up at the end of the year, but he is 1.5 more than what mitchell currently costs

i am not sure the kings are looking to replace goals right now, what it appears like they are trying to do which is mentioned in this article is change the culture

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 24, 2012 at 9:24 AM

true but Neal makes 3 million more next year plus we have to resign Crosby and other key free agents. You have to plan for the future years not just this one.

      • bihler7 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:27 AM

no i understand about planning for the future, but the cap will go up the amount the neal is making i feel, and if you can get rid of martin knowing that despres will be top 6 next year you also save alot of money there…

yes sid and staal both need contracts after next year, i bet sid goes no higher than 9 and staal no higher than 5, which only adds 1.3 onto what they are currently paid right now

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:36 AM

All very true except the cap is supposed to go down next year. Teams in smaller markets are having trouble reaching the cap basement level and are arguing that they can’t compete with the teams at the cap ceiling.

      • bihler7 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:50 AM

i havent seen anywhere that the cap is going down, i am not calling you out at all, i just havent seen it or any indication that the league is having issues that it would go down

as a pens fan i just look at it as such a good fit for the team and have faith in shero from what he has done in the past to make it work like he has so far, this is the final piece i feel that the team needs

crosby, malkin, staal, neal, kunitz, brown….i cant help but really like that top 6

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 24, 2012 at 11:03 AM

no argument here. That top 6 looks great. Were lucky to have hero as our GM!

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Feb 24, 2012 at 1:08 PM

I’ve also heard that the cap is expected to go down, the NHL is expected to demand that as part of the new CBA, they saw the NFL and NBA get concessions and they want to get on board with that.

I also heard the NHL is going to try and get rid of the salary floor in hopes of propping up teams that aren’t viable…we’ll see if that comes to fruition though.

  8. bihler7 - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:32 AM

rtrlive, i am in agreement with going to the pens, this guy is chris kunitz 2.0

what everyone has to look at here is that the Kings are in a salary cap situation as well with now having carter, richards, doughty, kopitar, williams in long contracts that are tough to move (unless you are the kings, who apparently want the long contracts)

so i think a team going in with prospects/draft picks package for Brown might have a better shot

    • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:16 AM

I don’t think that would get it done. and i think he’s a better player than kunitz.

  9. lonespeed - Feb 24, 2012 at 8:50 AM

My son’s pee-wee team will take him. We’ll offer four of our best 5-year-old prospects. He has to be willing to renegotiate his contract and play for juice boxes and snacks.

It may take 15-years, but we can offer the Kings a ton of value. Full disclosure: You can’t put them on the ice at the same time or they’ll all bunch up wherever the puck is. They also grow out of their equipment really fast. Oh, and one more thing. They whine. I mean, like really whine. ‘My skates are too tight’, ‘He pushed me’, ‘My helmet is too loose’. It will be like having four Sydney Crosby’s on the team.

    • sportsfreak13 - Feb 24, 2012 at 9:00 AM

Sounds like your maturity level is right up there with your sons and his teammates.

      • lonespeed - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:05 AM

Nine up-votes for those with a sense of humor. Five down votes from Penguin fans who are over sensitive to Crosby jokes.

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:10 AM

more like 5 thumbs up from people over 20, 3 thumbs down from people under 16 years old.

  10. chrisjdonohue - Feb 24, 2012 at 9:03 AM

Same sort of package the rangers would send to cbj for nash, send to la for brown. Dubi, christian thomas and first rounder.

    • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:12 AM

that makes more sense for the rangers then nash. I didn’t really make the connection initialy and just hoped the bruins would find a way to swing it without giving up to much(yea i know not really happening). But the rangers have the pieces, brown fits there script and his cap hit is right around 3 million as opposed to 8 for nash. Talk about saving money… damnit he’s defanetly going to the rangers.

    • drury2313 - Feb 24, 2012 at 3:12 PM

I say Dubinsky, zucarelo, eminger and a 3rd round pick for brown

  11. ravenscaps48 - Feb 24, 2012 at 9:55 AM

    Brooks Laich 2.0

  12. buford2000 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:03 AM

He would be a nice fit in Buffalo where we need so
E toughness. Also from the Ithaca region.

  13. buford2000 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:05 AM

The Sabres could use him as we need some team toughness and leadership. Miller seems he wants to go so how about miller, stafford for brown, quick and a second?

    • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:14 AM

are you on drugs? that trade only happens in a sabres fans dreams. Quick and brown are much better alone than miller and stafford.

  14. tn16 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Ballard and a prospect for brown

    • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:12 AM

noone wants ballard get over it.

  15. deeboy - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:50 AM

If the Kings are looking for prospects and picks

    Kings Get:
    Jamie McBain
    Zac Dalpe
1st round pick (likely top 5)

    Hurricanes:
    Dustin Brown

Carolina needs another top-6 forward and has the assets to do it.

    • odj810 - Feb 24, 2012 at 2:06 PM

that would be a good trade but i think the kings think they have a shot at the playoffs. So i don’t think they’ll give up brown for the future.

    • drury2313 - Feb 24, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Brown ain’t worth mcbain and a top 5 pick.

  16. chrisjdonohue - Feb 24, 2012 at 11:22 AM

News that the kings like luke schenn and prospect matt frattin. Could go to toronto

  17. jaybaileys - Feb 24, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Well that settles it, he’s going to Winnipeg.

  18. drury2313 - Feb 24, 2012 at 3:07 PM

He would be a perfect for for the Rangers. He is young, not really big contract. Still under contract for two years. Brings leadership, he can hit, penalty kill, powerplay, and he can score goals. Give the Kings Dubinsky, Zuccarelo, and a third round pick

  19. uscthom78 - Feb 24, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Brown to Toronto for MacArthur and a 3rd round pick…make it happen Burke.
