CBS Chicago reports that Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews was involved in a car accident Thursday morning and left the scene in an ambulance.

Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports the paper contacted a phone number belonging to Toews via text, and the response was “it’s nothing serious at all.”

According to witnesses, Toews’ Mercedes Benz hit a support beam of an elevated train (aka “The L”) in The Loop, a commercial center in downtown Chicago. CBS radio affiliate 670 The Score confirmed the vehicle is registered to Toews with witnesses reporting Toews was the driver.

“I saw his car in the pole,” Theron Banks, an employee at Steak Express said. “I came out. People were everywhere. Toews was in the ambulance. People were videotaping and taking pictures and trying to get autographs, but police said they couldn’t get autographs.”

It should be noted that Toews is currently out of the Chicago lineup with a concussion. It’s the second one he’s suffered since 2009, the first coming on a big hit from then-Vancouver defenseman Willie Mitchell.

Here’s a picture making the rounds that claims to be of the wreck (from 25Stanley.com):

Glad he’s okay- that could have been very, VERY bad.

Chicago-area PHTers, can I ask an out-of-towner question? Does this happen often there? Cars hitting the ‘L’ supports? I’ve always wondered how safe of a setup it is and things like this make me wonder again. Is this unusual in that it’s a star hockey player, or is it unusual in that this never happens anyway?

(I’ve never lived anywhere with a setup like this- I grew up in Denver, with ground-level light rail, and live in D.C. with the mostly below-ground Metro, so I’ve never experienced this.)

When I heard that Toews had hit a L support beam I was picturing something a lot worse and I think hes lucky. Living in chicago this sort of thing does happen but I wouldn’t go as far as say it happens a lot. I personally didn’t think it was that unusual that Toews hit it.

Man am I glad he is OK. Who the hell would ask him for an autograph after he gets in a car wreck!!!!!! I’m sure this doesn’t help the speedy recovery from his concussion either. Nice car, Toews.

I guess an autographed piece of Toews’ bumper could be a nice collector’s item. Or not…

Dong. Where is my automobile? Oto-mo-biiile?

  4. rtrlive - Feb 23, 2012 at 4:03 PM

This is why you don’t drive with a concussion….

    And high on pain killers?

Man – scary deal. By the looks of the scene, good thing he was turning at slower speed, or could have been a lot worse.

    Get well soon JT.

Is it too early for a “Toews smokes pole” joke?

Going to the scorecards…judges say no, not too soon.

    Keep your head up, kid!

Evidently he’s a better hockey player than he is a driver.

But seriously, I’m glad he’s okay.

Can’t tell if the airbag inflated. What is it usually, anything over 35mph and it goes off? And what time did this happen?

They should name that support beam Willie Mitchell. (I hope he’s okay or I’ll regret making jokes)
