As a Wings fan, we could have used Downie… but i think they are looking for a cheaper option as their big forward they are going to get at the deadline (don’t listen to Holland, they’ll sign one at the deadline…)

Downie is like a slightly more talented Shaun Avery….

Sherman is a patsy (to be nice). Steve Downie is a nice player, but he’s not worth a late-first round pick. Especially after giving up their own pick in the Varlamov deal, getting a first rounder would have been a good idea.

Or former teammates and friends recruiting players. Apparently Rick Nash may want to come to the Sharks because he played with Thornton in Europe during the lockout and they had “good chemistry” according to some. Yeah, I would imagine two NHL All Stars would do okay in a european league, lol.

Likewise, Mike Richards talks to Jeff Carter all the time. Guess who else he probably talks to? His GM, Dean Lombardi.

Logan Couture, coming off a calder contender season where he lead the Sharks in goals, the Sharks who have a bevy of 7M dollar players, re-signed early in the season for around 2M per year for the next two years, a gross underpayment.

And who negotiated his deal for him? John Thornton, brother of the Sharks captain Joe Thornton. Joe Thornton who already got his money from Doug Wilson, and whose Cup hopes greatly benefit from teammates like Couture taking far below market contracts.

This kind of stuff is going on everywhere now. I think its worse in the NBA, but its getting there in the NHL. Didnt used to be as bad, but now its everywhere. No such thing as a fair sport anymore it seems.

Mind blowing stupidity by Sherman. I didn’t think he could get dumber than the Varlamov trade… and then he doesn’t see THIS coming? That Yzerman- who has friendly ties with the Red Wings, as we all know- might flip the guy right back to the Wings, who JUST ASKED for Quincey?

How does Sherman have a job? Seriously, can anyone give me a reason?

This opens up some big options for Tampa. They can now realistically grab another superstar at D *cough*Weber*cough* or a forward in addition to a superstar goaltender. So he dumps 3 players and could potentially get two superstars out of the deal and still have a bunch of picks if he doesn’t have to deal too many away for a skater.

Yzerman has something planned…I can’t wait to see it.

He gave up something he had a surplus of (top nine forwards) for something his team desperately lacks (talented, mobile defensemen) and then turned around and traded that for a pick that won’t help his team for years.

Doesn’t matter that Detroit might’ve given Tampa more than they gave Colorado, Tampa gave away something it absolutely shouldn’t have.

There’s no way Yzerman makes a faux pas by submitting an offer sheet. He’s been around the league long enough to know that it’s not the proper way to do business.

I’m just amazed that Yzerman got a 1st round pick for essentially for Downie after Detroit wouldn’t give it to Colorado for Quincey.

We don’t know if that’s what Colorado wanted. At some point they need to get competitive in the NHL, not just stockpile prospects, and they showed they were willing to do that in the Varlamov deal.

Detroit wanted to keep roster players. Colorado wanted roster players back. Tampa was willing to give up roster players, but wanted draft picks back. Tampa becomes the middle man, all three get what they want.

I can see Tampa getting ready to offer sheet a goalie this summer, but not wanting to lose all their picks in the early rounds. Price, Rask, Schneider, Pavlec, Lindback and others are RFAs this summer if they don’t get new contracts done, so Tampa could offer sheet the best of th bunch but still have plenty of picks they got from other teams.

Sounds like a conflict of interest. Must be nice for the Red Wings to have former players running other teams.
