I didn’t say he was horrible, but I think he’s overrated as a GM. It was a bold move to trade up for the Sedins, and his drafting had good points, but he (and Nonis, his protege) didn’t do a good job of filling in the gaps.

Deadline deals to put us over the top for the likes of Brad May, Martin Rucinsky, Marc Bergevin, Keith Carney and Eric Weinrich were forgettable, as was him using our draft picks to get them. Our quantity at the draft suffered as a result of that and Gillis has been trying to catch up.

Add to that his mishandling of the RJ Umberger deal for a rumoured contract gap of a couple hundred thousand and his role in the Bure holdout and you have a GM who’s tenure wasn’t so rosy as people think.

Uh…no. To say that Burke deserves a lot of credit for Vancouver’s success is one thing. To say he is the sole reason…well you’re pretty much just proving that you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.

Burke certainly did some good things in Vancouver but there’s a reason we never went deep in the playoffs with him in charge. It’s the same reason why, despite spending several years rebuilding and having a lot of talent, Toronto still only has “a chance” of making the playoffs.

Burke is saying he might be in the market for a goalie because he has to say after last night’s game. He won’t give up anything worthwhile for a rental goalie. Wilson also won’t be fired, he’s Burke’s guy and that won’t change just because the media calls for his head.

Bryan Murray did very well in Anaheim. Burke came in there with a team already built, drafted Bobby Ryan (who didn’t play for Anaheim during “Burke’s” inherited Stanley Cup run) & added Chris Pronger. Adding Chris Pronger was big but incredibly easy since Pronger demanded a trade due to his rumoured fling with an Edmonton news reporter. Anyone can make a deal when the other GM has a player bending him over

Yes Blomfeld … Brian Burke does indeed rock. In fact, he’s the sole reason why the Canucks are who they are today, make no mistake about that … and he’s also the sole reason why the Leafs still have a chance to make the playoffs this year.

Go back over what both Burke and Nonis brought to Vancouver, you can say we don’t miss him because of the work that Gillis is doing but don’t underestimate the good he did here.

Without him Vancouver would not have the Sedins. They probably would not even be playing together if it wasn’t for Burke.

as I understand your viewpoint, I think he did okay in Van. and did very VERY well in Anaheim and is doing a good job in Toronto.

Time will tell but overall he is a top 10 GM

Wait until you have him as a GM of your team. He’s great for sound bites, but could be better as a GM. We don’t miss him in Vancouver.

Why does he have to fire him? If the Leafs do not make the playoffs, it will revolve around the goaltending and whose responsibility is it to get a competent goaltender for the team?
