Interesting thought, that he might just be ammo for another trade. Part of me wondered if the Preds were doing the same thing when they got Hal Gill- it made sense there, and it makes sense here. Question is, what would the Wings really need right now? They’re fine on defense, Howard has been solid in net (other than missing time injured, of course), and despite Datsyuk missing some time they’re one of the better offensive squads in the league. So where do you improve, really?

If I’ve learned anything from the past 20 years, it’s that the Wings will find a way. (And as an Avs fan, that pisses me off! )

I would say they wanted him back because you can’t go wrong having big and talented defensemen on your team. I really didn’t want to see him go after their run in 08′. I think they also want to bolster the D seeing as how Stuart is a RFA after this season and rumor has it he will go back home to the west coast.

maybe they traded for him and then realized what his asking price would be? Pure speculation on my part. You’d think it’d have to be given detriot will probably be in the late first round

thanks for the reply… I think he has done a pretty good job too, but nothing has really been eye opening to me but I am sure that’s because I haven’t been paying THAT much attention. I just don’t see how this team is failing to make the playoffs and am probably pushing too much blame this season on Mr. Y

I believe he will be a good GM, but it’s too early to forecast… Kind of like how I think about my teams GM in Chuck Fletcher for the MN wild. So far so good. but time will tell.

GB, Bolts fan here, we’re all fully expecting him to stock the cupboard a bit by moving some of these picks. No one thinks he’s going to draft 6 guys in the first two rounds and let Stamkos rot for a few years.

He hasn’t been GM of this team for long, but enough of his moves (Shipping Meszaros, getting Gagne for a bag of pucks, picking up Brewer and Roloson at last year’s deadline) have panned out nicely so we have a certain level of trust for him.

The only consensus disappointment has been his decision to re-sign Roloson, but he gets a mulligan due to how weak the free-agent goalie pool was last year (How are Bryz and Vokoun doing these days?)

Wow. Great to see that Yzerman is still on the Red Wings payroll. I thought he was trying to build a contender in Tampa. “Hey, let’s ignore the goal position, miss the playoffs, and get good players for the Red Wings! That’ll be good for me…”

based on what? Not saying he is or isn’t but what are you possibly basing that on. He is a rookie GM that has the best goal scorer in the game. Personally, I’d help him out and not go on a 3-5 year plan stocking draft picks.

He could be stocking picks to make a trade this summer, who knows but if I was a fan of the Bolts I would be a bit disappointed

Is Detroit giving up a #1 (obviously a late round pick but still seems like a lot) for Quincey maybe part gamesmanship on their part since that kind of trade value precedent can hamper teams like Chicago’s ability to pick up the pieces they need?

Perhaps Yzerman is stocking up on picks that he can use as trade bait at the deadline (or off-season) for one of those teams desperate to re-tool. I won’t mention any potential teams that could be in that position, but just a thought.

Call me crazy but I really don’t know if I like this deal for the Lightning. Det wins the most here but the Avs did well too. Just don’t see how a late 1st round pick is going to help the Lightning in Stamkos’s eyes!

Downie’s a restricted free agent, the Avs should be safe there.

The team I dislike this trade for is actually the Lightning – their defense corps needs a lot of work and turning a physical forward over (when they have Ashton and Connolly coming up) for a mobile defender who can move the puck seems like a great move.

Why they turned around and dealt Quincey for a first round pick and an undrafted AHLer is beyond me – I know Stevie Y has been saying the Bolts are not as close as some think, but he must think they are a long way off if a 26 year old defenseman is less valuable than a draft pick.

Not sure if I really like the Avs making this move- the only way this goes well is if they’re hoping to re-sign Downie after the season. Otherwise it’s a team bringing in a rental player, despite not really being in the running for a playoff spot in the first place (let’s be honest here), at the cost of a very good defenseman.

On Yzerman’s behalf- man, what a draft he’s getting ready to have…
