Video: Steve Stamkos gets his 40th goal on a breakaway

Feb 19, 2012, 12:18 AM EDT

Stamkos has been on fire lately with seven goals in his last nine games. He’s a threat every time his stick touches the puck, as he demonstrated to the Washington Capitals on Saturday.

That was Stamkos’ 40th goal of 2011-12 and this is the third straight season he’s reached that milestone. With 24 games left in the Lightning’s schedule, Stamkos is well on his way to also reaching the 50-goal mark for the second time in his career. Stamkos currently has an eight goal lead on the Rocket Richard Trophy, which he previously shared with Sidney Crosby in 2009-10.

Great goal, terrible video editing. I guess we’re to assume Stamkos challenged the Capitals to a race from the blue line, and won?

What a tremendous young talent, with great upside. Hope to see him in the league for many years to come. Maybe he’ll bring the Bolts to the front of the hockey world. Good luck, kid.

I was at the game. And the D made a horrible cross ice pass and Stammer just put on the jets, no Goalie in the league stops that
