In a related story, GM Paul Holmgren also commits to not winning a Stanley Cup with the Philadelphia Flyers, since the stunning new lows Bryzgalov's set in Flyers goaltending outright guarantee he'll be fired (Perhaps out of a cannon. Perhaps into the sun.) before Bryz's contract expires.

This was a rebuilding year for Flyers who over achieved with young talent. At this point stand fast and stop the stupid trading away of draft picks for 35 year old D who wont be here in 3 months!

Yup although Ive always thought that letting Biron go wasnt the best decision.(we wouldnt be in that situation with Bryz if they had sign Biron for the 3.5 mil a year he was asking and would get better goaltending thent they are right now.

Leighton is a bust? C'mon. The guy is a career backup who had a hot streak. He was a hundred dollar bill that you found in the street: He showed up out of the blue. It was awesome for the moment. You got excited. But eventually he was spent and you moved on.

I'm not sure that even the most starry-eyed dreamers in Flyerville expected him to be Pelle Lindbergh reincarnate.

That said, I agree with you on the fact that a goalie trade is going to be all but impossible to pull off. Bryz' contract makes him nearly impossible to move and cutting bait on him half way through his first year would be a sell-low panic move.

Maybe I'm more patient than most fans, but I'd like to see if he can dial it up a notch come playoff time. If he can, great. If not, deal with trying to move him in the offseason.

Ever since the post yesterday, where Bryzgalov said he was being used as a scapegoat, I've been trying to decide who the best Flyers goalie has been in the time I've been watching the team.

I started watching in the mid-90s, and the first goalie I remember well was Hextall, the second, worse time he was with the Flyers. After him there was Garth Snow, Garth Snow's enormous pads, Sean Burke (at least twice, there might have been a third time), John Vanbiesbrouck, Brian Boucher (again, twice), Roman Cechmanek, Robert Esche, Antero Niitymaki, Marty Biron, Ray Emery, Michael Leighton, and now Bobrovsky and Bryzgalov. I may have left a few out, but I can't say that's my fault, because they've all been a combination of forgettable and terrible.

So, looking over this list, I can honestly say that I think that the best Flyers goalie in the last fifteen years has been Brian Boucher. That makes me so happy that baseball season is about to start.

Leighton is a bust. What is Holmgren going to do ? It's not like he can trade Bryz and his $51M contract. Who would want Bob? What goaltender would be an upgrade? Rask, Bernier, Schneider? Not going to happen for Flyers, who'd have to give up another huge piece to get one of those guys. They're stuck (for the next decade maybe). Get used to it.
