School kids clean up graffiti on Lucic’s family church

Feb 17, 2012, 2:36 PM EDT

It’s becoming a bit of a tradition in Vancouver – good citizens cleaning up the day after idiot Canucks fans make a mess.

The Globe and Mail’s David Ebner reports via Twitter that a group of school kids showed up to scrub off the graffiti that was sprayed on Milan Lucic’s family church in Burnaby, BC.

We assume at some point the kids stopped peering in the windows and actually got to work.

Anyway, it’s not surprising that this story is getting some traction; however, the majority of Canucks fans must be getting tired of taking heat for the actions of a dim-witted minority. The only real solution is to round up all the idiots and throw them off a cliff, but the “law” says that’s not an option.

  1. elvispocomo - Feb 17, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Once again, the majority outweighs the minority. I’m sure there will still be plenty of Boston fans coming crawling over to apologize since they were so quick to jump on the other story as clearly showing how all Canucks fans were idiots.

    • back2backbees - Feb 17, 2012 at 3:37 PM

All Canuck fans ARE IDIOTS, only SOME are criminals

      • koyoteken - Feb 18, 2012 at 9:07 AM

        LOL! ……good one…

    • dropthepuckeh - Feb 17, 2012 at 3:45 PM

Wtf are you talking about? Apologize for what? For spray painting a Vancouver church? Jason, of course the story is getting traction. It is a despicable display of ignorance and undoubtedly extremely offensive to the parishioners who worship there or anywhere.

We get that it is the “minority” of Canucks fans but everyone jumping up and crying about how it isn’t representative of the majority of Vancouver is equally offensive. Stop making excuses and assume some responsibility for this crap still happening.  If you aren’t adamant in your opposition to these idiots you are complicit for allowing it to continue to happen. “It’s not our fault” is tired. Get your shyte together Vancouver.  You lost the Cup Finals, deal with it. The rest of the world is looking forward to the 2012 Playoffs.

      • Jason Brough - Feb 17, 2012 at 4:04 PM

I have no control over and won’t apologize for the actions of a few dumb kids.

      • dropthepuckeh - Feb 17, 2012 at 5:06 PM

Jason I never asked you to apologize – I replied to elvispocomo and his ridiculous statement. We all know it was a select few blah blah. You guys are more concerned with how everyone perceives you than you are with the insanity happening within a contingent of your fan base. The story is barely a day old and every Canuck fan (writer) is ready to say its overplayed/ not a big deal/ or your fault. Eerily similar to your team’s antics. It’s f*cked up that it is still going on. I know it’s not your fault.

      • elvispocomo - Feb 17, 2012 at 5:37 PM

And you’ve obviously missed my point, which is ironic since back2backbees illustrated so nicely that there are Bruins fans that have no interest in not lumping all Canucks fans in with the idiot(s) who spray painted the church – much the same as they have for the riot and that the whole team dive and whine, etc.

Now, I’m certainly not expecting anyone to come apologize for making generalized comments that are obviously untrue. I really would be an idiot if I thought someone would make a statement and either back it up or apologize for it when questioned. If I can’t expect some of the Bruins fans to understand that before they comment the first time around, I surely can’t expect a modicum of humility when it comes to being wrong.

If you were one of the people that try and say Vancouver sucks because they dive, or whine, or their fans riot, then I’d be pointing my comments at you. If you weren’t then I’m not sure why you got so defensive, since you must clearly realize that all those same things Canucks and their fans are accused of are done by the Bruins themselves.

And, btw, I’ll just have to assume you’ve adamantly opposed the fans that have rioted in Boston over the years, since clearly you’d be complicit in allowing those to continue (and continue, and continue) to happen.

      • Jason Brough - Feb 17, 2012 at 5:53 PM

What do you want? A huge rant on how it’s wrong to spray paint churches? The kids who did this know that. It’s why they did it.
You’re telling me I have to assume responsibility for stuff like this. How? Patrol the streets at night? And why? I didn’t do it. I’m not their dad. I just happen to live in the same city.

      • dropthepuckeh - Feb 17, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Yeah man, rant about how insane it is to spray paint a church. It would be a lot better than your immediate defensive posturing about how it is only a small group of fans etc Don’t you think everyone here understands that in the same way the punks knew it was wrong. Further, as a “journalist” you actually have an opportunity to say something to a lot of people (or some). Instead you come off as a homer whose main point is not the craziness of the incident but the fact that his isn’t all fans.

Elvis, take the blue suede shoe out of your ass and re-read my post. I totally agree that EVERY team is guilty of diving, whining, cheap shots, etc. Clearly it is extremely subjective depending on your loyalties. Look at Jason’s reporting. In terms of riots -any idiot who riots when a sports team loses is pathetic. Anyone who riots when they win is insufferable. I look at it as an opportunity to identify some serious scum of society gathered in one place. The nonsense that has occurred in Boston is inexcusable. In response, Boston police, the mayor (think Simpsons) and the Boston team owners have been extremely aggressive in preventing anything else fom occurring. In fact, game 7 was supposed to be shown for season tick holders in the Garden and the mayor nixed it for fear of something happening.

So Elvis, I am adamant that rioting is stupid, in Boston, vancouver, Montreal or Miami.

Every fan base has a few idiots that make everyone else look bad, but Vancouver seems to have alot more of those idiots than most people.

    • haterzgonahate - Feb 17, 2012 at 3:29 PM

no… just a lot more attention seeing as their team is one of the best and last years SCF was exciting. same reason why Boston is hated on daily.

i feel like i’m the only one that gets this…

      • elvispocomo - Feb 17, 2012 at 5:44 PM

Nope, plenty of us get it but no matter how much we point it out, the ones who should understand don’t pick up on that.

Boston didn’t get the same level of attention through the regular season last year, and didn’t get as much hate for doing the same things as everyone else as a result. Now, they’ve won a Stanley Cup and have been challenging for 1st in the league, but we hear a lot about how they aren’t liking the attention. Weird how that comes around, no?

    • kitshky - Feb 17, 2012 at 6:59 PM

I can think of a few markets in North America with a far larger percentage of “idiot” fans than a city most known for its liberal views, pot induced apathy, and its combination of tree hugging / birkenstock wearing / drum circle attending hippies living next door to money hungry business men …n/mind the hipsters who’d never let themselves admit they even care about sports.

Is Vancouver a squirrley odd town full of character contradictions? Absolutley, but..

Have you ever been to a Yankees and Red Sox game in either stadium? I’m a huge Yanks fan but no reasonable person could defend the actions of a large percentage of both the NY and Boston fans. Take the Raider nation into account, remember stories of players getting mugged walking out of the old Chicago Stadium, consider whats happened recently in the parking lots of Stadiums in major US cities… I could go on but I won’t.

Be a homer, but do it with at least some perspective.

        Stay classy, Philadelphia!

  3. chiadam - Feb 17, 2012 at 2:50 PM

The children then realized that the Canucks did not win the 2011 Stanley Cup, re-vandalized the church, and burned down a few buildings.

  4. hsnepts - Feb 17, 2012 at 3:03 PM

Positive it was a Boston fan trying to make us look bad. Maybe it was Lucic himself. Only a Boston fan would misspell ‘Canucks’.

    • back2backbees - Feb 17, 2012 at 3:50 PM

the irony of it…oh wait you meant the typo i’m sure

  5. guinsrule - Feb 17, 2012 at 3:52 PM

I find it odd you censored the graffiti in the photo, the same graffiti that a large group of school kids are actually standing around in the photo.

  6. jthompson77 - Feb 17, 2012 at 4:28 PM

Welcome to the club Vancouver….the entire fanbase being blamed for the actions of a few rotten apples. Oh wait, am I exposing the double standard?? I’m sorry, I forgot only Philly fans all act the same way. My bad, I’ll go find Santa to throw some batteries at.

  7. banshee950 - Feb 17, 2012 at 4:49 PM

rough day to be a Canucks fan eh? yesterday you were having such a fine time pig piling on Boston with the habbies calling us the most classless fans, cheapshot thugs and all that. now today, riot sentencing, more graffiti, and a Betuzzi story. OUCH!
lets be honest here, is there anyone who can stand up and say they’ve never been embarrassed by the actions of fellow fans at home? I can’t. You are right about the minority, it’s worse at playoff time since it seems the dbags come out of the wood work and can afford the tix. We’ve had some class moments too, The Vancover fans that stayed to cheer the B’s, Bostons standing O for Koivu, Habsman anything to add to the list? FYI, Raymond was cheered by many (myself included) as he got up and was helped off, listen for it.

  8. t16rich - Feb 17, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Awesome. I am glad this got mentioned. It seems people like to focus on the negative Nuck fans instead of the ones like this or the ones who showed up after game 7 to clean up our streets. Or the high school girl who wanted to raise depression awareness after Rypiens death. Say what you all want, but the real Canucks fans are second to none. Except maybe in Stanley Cups. Same with Philly. Sure they might deserve the fans criticsm but fact is, both are awesome fan bases and have way more good fans than dick head fans. Aside from that dumb Eagles fan that posted on here, did you really hear any fans from Philly support the assault of a Rangers fan? I didnt. Every Philly fan that left a comment online that I read was hoping that dick head got caught for his assault. I recognize there is negative, but both are great fan bases regardless of what haters say.

  9. chiadam - Feb 17, 2012 at 5:20 PM

Did they enjoy some homo-erotic donuts after cleaning the church? Seriously, those animals in Vancouver vandalized a church? A CHURCH?? They deserve to have a loser franchise. Win a Cup already. Losers.

    • elvispocomo - Feb 17, 2012 at 5:49 PM

      Stay classy, chiadam.

    • t16rich - Feb 17, 2012 at 6:16 PM

It would only take a man who thinks to much about men to find a donut homo erotic. Have a good day chiadam.

  10. kitshky - Feb 17, 2012 at 6:44 PM

    Once again …

You have no idea what you are talking about if you think this is in any way reflective of the team or it’s fans. The only reason this story is getting “traction” is because the Vancouver media (and Canucks fans) have brought this ridiculously juvenile act of vandalism to light. This story is about how a clearly well intentioned teacher or parent took the initiative to help out.

You again are just showing us you have zero knowledge of the city of Vancouver.

I will never apologize for people coming into the Downtown core and vandalizing my neighborhood, disprespecting this city, its citzens, and lastly it’s hockey club. I’ll also never apologize for a couple drunk kids in East Van with too much time (and immaturity) on their hands. I’ll also try and restrain myself from highlighting the irony of any fan from the Boston area (or NY, Chicago, Philadelphia …ect) pointing fingers at any city’s citizens acting in an undignified manner … seriously guys, its a reputation you’ve taken pride in for years.

As well, having the police finally charge and convict a rioter is a good day for the city of Vancouver so thanks for highlighting it.

  11. babar61 - Feb 17, 2012 at 6:49 PM

People love to label people or entire city’s. So is everyone in happy valley a pedophile enabler? Hey didn’t someone die in the riot when the Boston red sox won the world series? Oh but it’s different right because it was just a freak accident with one idiot, right?
