Pavel Datsyuk’s dramatic goal makes it 22 for Detroit

Feb 17, 2012, 10:17 PM EDT

The Detroit Red Wings added win No. 22 to their all-time record home streak in about as dramatic a fashion one can ask for.

It looked like the Nashville Predators were going to force the game into overtime at 1-1 but Pavel Datsyuk had other plans. Nicklas Lidstrom sent a no-look pass to Henrik Zetterberg – who was doubtful to even play tonight – who then found Datsyuk with a lethal amount of room to score a beautiful winner with just five seconds left.

Datsyuk already generated an unusual point on Friday as he was credited with a second assist after he lost his edge and fell to the ice but managed to get the puck to Todd Bertuzzi, who helped Johan Franzen score the 1-0 goal. Nashville’s Nick Spaling seemed to collect the game-tying goal deep into the second period, but that was not to be.

A Fox Sports commentator described the scene in an interesting way: “It wasn’t a playoff game, but it was a playoff game’s cousin.”

Joey MacDonald allowed one goal on 21 shots for the second consecutive contest to win his fifth game in a row (and improve his 2011-12 record to 5-1-1). He’s been an interesting subplot to this run, as one cannot help but wonder if Ty Conklin will be the odd man out once Jimmy Howard returns to action.

That thought is probably pretty far from the minds of most Red Wings right now, though. The bottom line is that the historic streak is at 22 wins and familiar foe San Jose stands in the way of No. 23 on Sunday.

* Or tied the 1929-30 Boston Bruins’ unofficial mark, if you ask Mike Milbury.

      exactly… 22 in a row IN THE SAME SEASON…

  3. polegojim - Feb 17, 2012 at 10:42 PM

    James…. your prejudice is showing….
“Datsyuk already generated an unusual point on Friday as he was credited with a second assist after he lost his edge and fell to the ice but managed to get the puck to Todd Bertuzzi, who helped Johan Franzen score the 1-0 goal”

MANAGED to get the puck to Todd Bertuzzi…. please… it’s DATSYUK!!!

There is no manage… there is either DO, or not do. Dats is DO!!!

      Prejudice?

      • polegojim - Feb 17, 2012 at 11:08 PM

No disrespect intended, but seriously… Managed?

You’re too good of a writer to actually think he ‘manages’ those types of plays.

Dats is truly that good. Once is a lifetime type player. I feel highly privileged to have watched two of them where the winged wheel… Howe and Dats…. and yes, its because I’m getting old.

That’s all I’m trying to say…. I’ll get off my soap box now and temper my exuberance and zeal… but only slightly.

First I’ll say this, yes, this streak is impressive. Hats off to the wings for owning at home.. This streak would be more impressive IF it was 22 straight games regardless of the location.. I will also concede that the wings are leading the west and will get home ice in the playoffs(for the west) and that could very well be a series changer. I think this streak should obviously be applauded but streaks that are consecutive home and away should go before this one

As expected from a Sharks fan.

Tell us sharksfan754… when was the last time the Sharks won 22 in a row at home?

There’s a reason the NHL, NHL, NHL proclaims this an amazing feat. It’s only been done in the same season… NEVER before now.

Polego calm down and listen for a sec
        A) my name is sharksfan so everyone knows who I root for to cover all bias.
        B) to answer your question the sharks have never won that many straight home games (obviously) or for that matter a Stanley cup (one step ahead of ya)
        C) my favorite baseball team the Oakland a’s won 20 straight games both home and away, which you have to admit is slightly more impressive (for just 20 but obviously the wings have now won more and continue to, so it continues to make a better and better case with each w) than just home games
        D) I admitted Detroits home win streak is impressive and I’m not hating on it but I don’t really think you can compare it to the dolphins streak in the early 70’s bc the dolphins won consecutive games (not your comparison but pht’s)
        E) I think pavelis the best player in the game right now
        F) the sharks are one of the few teams to win at the joe this year and in looking forward to Sunday and I know you are too bc it’s always a great game when our teams play each other

All great records, but this is a stand alone NHL record, period. That’s really the point.

Yes, I look forward to it. Always a good game.

Are you trying to make some kind of point here?

      • polegojim - Feb 17, 2012 at 11:47 PM

        ; ) … with a doubt and absolutely.
