Video: Selanne ties Shanahan with 656 career goals - in style

Anaheim Ducks v Pittsburgh Penguins

We already covered the short-term impact of the Anaheim Ducks’ 2-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but what about the historical angle? Teemu Selanne scored the game-winner for the 656th goal of his NHL career, tying Brendan Shanahan for 12th all-time in style:

Interestingly enough, Selanne and Jaromir Jagr could jostle for their place in history as the season goes along. Jagr is currently in 11th all-time with 659 (just 31 behind his former teammate Mario Lemieux for ninth overall).

Selanne continues to inch up the points scoring list, too, as he broke his tie with Brett Hull for 21st all-time with point No. 1,392:

19. Jari Kurri: 1,398
20. Luc Robitaille: 1,394
21. Selanne: 1,392
22. Hull: 1,391

The Finnish Flash isn’t likely to make Jagr sweat in that category, however, as the Czech winger is in ninth place with 1,638 points. Surely the most interesting name on that list for Selanne is Kurri, who must have been an inspiration as a fantastic Finnish forward whose greatest years came alongside Wayne Gretzky.

(Feel free to debate the merits of the two Finns in the comments, if that’s your thing.)
