Bruins, Sabres get downright nasty

Feb 8, 2012, 9:32 PM EDT

The Boston Bruins-Buffalo Sabres game is only in the second period, but it’s already provided all kinds of mayhem. (And not just for Tuukka Rask, who was pulled early after allowing three goals.)

Buffalo is handling Boston on the scoreboard so far with a 4-0 lead, but the biggest fireworks are happening in the form of fights. Shawn Thornton‘s second fight is likely to create the most controversy, but whet your appetite with the first one as he took on Cody McCormick:

For those who called for Milan Lucic‘s head after he steamrolled Ryan Miller in November, this video of him absolutely pummeling Sabres pest Patrick Kaleta shows why that’s easier said than done:

Update: here’s video of Thornton dropping the gloves with Mike Weber. Thornton received 17 penalty minutes (including an instigator) for the fight. Word is that it was a legal line change, so that should quell suspension worries. (Feel free to advance a counterargument in the comments if you’ve heard or feel otherwise, though.)

Enjoy it, Buffalo, since this is your Stanley Cup.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Feb 9, 2012 at 4:10 AM

Enjoy it? They probably should. Their Stanley Cup? I’d say that’s a bit of a low blow. I remember when the Bruins weren’t exactly the team to beat. I’m sure you do as well. Just keep in mind how karma’s a b!tch.

      • drewsylvania - Feb 9, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Just stating the fact. Buffalo isn’t making the playoffs. You read the low blow into it.

      6 cups to none

    • drewsylvania - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:10 PM

One of these teams won’t be around come playoff time. Hint: check the standings.

    • hockinj25 - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:59 PM

      yeah I know Buffalo isn’t good. That’s why I’m a wings fan. 11 cups to 6

      • trbowman - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:40 PM

So you’re a Wings fan just because they’ve been good?

      • hockinj25 - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:44 PM

no I’m from the Detroit area

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Feb 9, 2012 at 3:07 AM

13 cups to 11. See how pointless that is? Playing this game just fosters a situation where Habsman can show up and say something none of us have a retort for. Seriously, nobody wants that.

  3. nhlbruins90 - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:07 PM

    This is just ugly.

Obviously, the momentum changed when the goal was disallowed. Who knows how the game would have evolved if that horrible called hadn’t been made. Still, the B’s need to wake up now.

  4. drewsylvania - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Third man in for Weber–ten game suspension upcoming. He probably doesn’t want to play for the Sabres anyway.

    • habsman - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:51 PM

“Third man in for Weber–ten game suspension upcoming.”

As soon as I read that, I knew beyond a shadow of doubt, that you were an idiot.

The same goes for your cheap shot, sucker punching Bruins.

      • itsallniceonice - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:05 PM

I just had to read your username to figure out you were an idiot.

“The same goes for your cheap shot, sucker punching Bruins.”
So what do you call Subban fighting teammates in practice I’d love to know?

      • habsman - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Based on your response, am I to believe that you agree that the Bruins are cheap shot sucker punchers? It’s hard to know when you point fingers in another direction in order to deflect attention. Nice try, but it won’t work. The rest of the league is onto the cheap shot Bruins.

Do you always bag-lick for other bloggers like drewsylvania aka redrews? Anything else?

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Feb 9, 2012 at 3:10 AM

I hope everyone here knows that in Habsman’s world a sucker punch is any kind of physical play his soft as sh*t team is forced to deal with, be it perfectly clean or Subbanesque.

    • laurely515 - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:11 PM

Wait, what? Third man in? You can’t be serious. You didn’t actually watch what happened, did you?

      • drewsylvania - Feb 9, 2012 at 10:55 AM

I think I messed that up. I didn’t see it–went by what Emrick and my brother said.

    • madtolive5 - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Habs are you serious…you always write the same crap.
Sorry you were pissed about a good ferrence non
      Elbow call LAST YEAR

      Get over it

      • habsman - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:01 AM

It wasn’t an elbow, Ference drove his shoulder into the head of an unsuspecting forward who was looking the other way. It was a typical cowardly Bruin cheap shot, one of many over the past couple of years. Up until recently these incidents were routinely disregarded by Colie Campbell (Greg’s Daddy). But nice try at the “spin”. Good luck at “spinning” going forward. Just too many incidents to defend.

Over/Under on next Bruin suspension? How about Lucic cross checking Kaleta in the back of the head while he was down on the ice tonight? Can you say cheap shot?

      • drewzducks - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:21 AM

He still hasn’t gotten over the extremely clean McLaren hit on Zednik or Chara’s gentle nudge into the Maxi-pad.

      • habsman - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:33 AM

        drewzducks/drewsylvania/redrews,

Why all the names Drew? Do you need three to defend the cowardly cheap shot Bruins? Come on man, grow a pair.

      • drewzducks - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:41 AM

I’m neither of those posters Habsnot and as a Pats fan why don’t you root for your Alouettes.

      • habsman - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:47 AM

Haha, come on now. You most certainly are those three. Don’t be a coward like your hockey team. Come clean, you’ll feel better.

Look at it like this. You’ve outed me as a Pat’s fan, and I’ve just outed you as having three names on this blog. The first step is admitting.

      • drewzducks - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:51 AM

Have no reason to lie pal but if it makes you feel better knock yourself out. Just don’t hurt yourself.

      • dropthepuckeh - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:58 AM

Habsman it is time to move on from the “sucker punch” and “Coli Campbell (Greg’s Dad)” story line. Your material is stale, your attitude pathetic and your effort lame. Surely you can’t believe the Bruins are guilty of anymore sucker punches than your beloved Habs? To the contrary I pretty sure that most would agree that Bruins fight when fighting is called for; one might argue too much, but certainly not “sucker punchers.” Look at the turtles in Montreal, Mon Dieu!! Alert the authorities and call 911 but when push comes to shove, to a man, Marchand and Lucic and whomever else has been regarded as having taken a liberty, have dropped the gloves when asked. They understand the code and while they play on the edge, they get it and answer.

As for the Campbell Dad reference….we are all very happy that your knowledge of hockey includes a former disciplinarian of the NHL and his son who now plays on the Bruins but do you also know that he isn’t still in that position right? You also understand that he was actually quite outspoken at one point about his distaste for Marc Savard (a Bruin) while in his disciplinarian position (ironically). Unfortunately, Savard is no longer with the Bruins and probably will never play again due to what I assume, even you, a single-minded frustrated angry child would agree was a “cowardly cheap shot” as you like to spew.

So do us all a favor and move forward in your commentary as you are clearly passionate and interested in hockey. It is too bad your participation mirrors that of your beloved bleu blanc rouge: irrelevant, obnoxious, and having no impact of the NHL of 2012……

      • habsman - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:59 AM

Thanks for the concern Drew. You don’t mind if I call you and your “friends” Drew do you?

      • drewzducks - Feb 9, 2012 at 1:08 AM

I’ll try to make it easier for you and post under “Kordics Dealer” from now on.

      • habsman - Feb 9, 2012 at 1:31 AM

        @dropthepuckeh,

Nice critique and I will agree on some points.

However, I certainly do believe the Bruins get away with much more than any other team. Chara on Max, No suspension. Ference on Halpern, No suspension. Ference flips the bird, No suspension. Horton sucker punch on Moore, No suspension. Lucic runs Miller, No suspension. Shall I go on…..?

And Campbell’s’ distaste for Savard was before Greg’s arrival in Boston, and quite possibly before Savards’ arrival as well. And lets be clear, to have the head of discipline dishing out suspensions and fines while having a son playing in the league wouldn’t be tolerated in any other sport in North America.

The Cooke hit on Savard was definitely a cheap shot and worthy of suspension. However, Colie couldn’t suspend him. Why? Because the exact same check happened two weeks earlier when Mike Richards destroyed David Booth. Richards got zero games. So a “cheap shot” is a “cheap shot” regardless of who is delivering it.There is a difference between tough clean hockey, and what we have seen from the Bruins over the past couple years.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Feb 9, 2012 at 3:14 AM

@drew: obviously there’s some sarcasm there, but Chara’s hit was interference (surprisingly not a felony outside of Quebec) and that hit on Zednick is one of the most gutless plays I’ve ever seen. Nevertheless, I will support the Bruins anytime they play anybody but the Leafs. I’d rather cheer for a team that plays on or over the edge than cheer for the Habs.

      • madtolive5 - Feb 9, 2012 at 8:28 AM

        Habs for the 1000 time.
Colin did not rule on his sons games.
This was true when he was in Florida and Boston.
Any incident involving a game which his son participated he legally could not rule on any disciplinary action.

SO HE DIDN’T RULE ON CHARA LAST YEAR.

      • solador78 - Feb 9, 2012 at 9:46 AM

How about those NEW YORK GIANTS?!?!?

        Good vs. Evil triumphs again!

      • habsman - Feb 9, 2012 at 9:54 AM

Do seriously believe that Colin Campbell didn’t exert any influence over decisions involving the Bruins? Do you believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny as well?

He had one assistant, Mike Murphy who made a fool of himself in last years PO by consulting Brian Burke on the Rome suspension (This was after Colie graciously stepped down prio to the finals to “remove any perception of favoritism”).

Campbell and Murphy worked together for years and handed down rulings on every team in the league. They are friends. They ate together, drank together, golfed together, went to peeler bars together. And you think Murphy had complete autonomy when ruling on the Bruins? Seriously?

Mike Murphy is a “Yes Man”, and an incompetent one to boot. Thats why Colie hired him. How else do you explain the multiple incidents involving the Bruins without suspensions? Do you believe the NHL should have the Head of Discipline making desicions that could effect the outcome of games and team standings, while having a son playing on one of the teams? I don’t.

      • solador78 - Feb 9, 2012 at 10:07 AM

The NHL Board of Governors took an informal vote on whether to suspend Chara. The results were split in 3 almost equal parts: suspension, no suspension and not sure.

In the end, the Chairman broke the deadlock and ruled that his own player wouldn’t be suspended.

Bettman then smiled and nodded and cashed his $7 million contract extension.

      • drewsylvania - Feb 9, 2012 at 10:57 AM

Until a few minutes ago I hadn’t touched this page until around 10PM last night. This conversation is hilarious.

  5. rabidbillsfan - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:14 PM

Or maybe a Playoff preview. I may have been one of the only Buffalo fans last season who had asked for Boston in the playoffs over Philly, but I perosonally think we match up well with Boston. Sure, were not as physical, but as you can see that doesn’t matter. We owned the B’s last season, or should I say Stafford owned the Bruins. We have the guys that get under the tough guys skin and draw the stupid penaltys. Also, sure that disallowed goal may have been a bad call, but you brough it on yourselves. Do you think if Lucic hadn’t steamrolled Miller earlier this season, that half of the calls against goaltenders would even be called? I mean 6-0? This is just the beginning.

    • drewsylvania - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Playoff preview? Match up well? The Bruins can’t beat Carolina, but they won’t be making the playoffs either.

      • elvispocomo - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:52 PM

That’s a good point, maybe the Bruins should aim for the 4th/5th matchup in the first round, just in case any of those teams they can’t beat finds their way into the 8th spot. It sure looks like they’re trying to based on last night’s effort, but if they really want to do so, they’ll have to be much worse considering they play most of their games against Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo and Montreal.

    • trbowman - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:42 PM

      Playoffs in my wildest dreams.

Another disappointing season for a Buffalo team!

    WTG Tim Thomas!

  7. t16rich - Feb 8, 2012 at 10:34 PM

And this guy was telling Dale Weise about tough guy etiquette? If Thornton ever got traded and had to play like this against Boston, both Chara and Lucic would rip his tough guy punk ass a new one.

    • elvispocomo - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:57 PM

No, no, you’ve got it wrong – he wasn’t trying to teach Weise about tough guy etiquette, he was trying to trick him into a fight when Weise was actually talking with McQuaid, not Thornton.

It might have been a legal line change but he for sure only had one thing in mind coming off the bench.

    • drewsylvania - Feb 9, 2012 at 1:38 PM

Everyone knows what Weise did–pretending to drop–was a total pussy move. And Chara or Lucic would beat up just about anyone in the league.

This is why I love having fighting in the NHL. Sabre skates in for a job that wasn’t needed, teammate sticks up for the fallen player. Lesson learned (willing to bet he thinks twice before doing that next time)

  10. trbowman - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:39 PM

    Go Sabres!

  11. donfocker89 - Feb 8, 2012 at 11:48 PM

Geez its all the same. The Bruins get knocked around for a 6-0 loss and have lately kind of been reeling. So of course every post is all about what happened in the past with the whole “6 cups to none.” You obviously have nothing to say because your team lost, so just get over it and move on with the season, mmmkay?

    • dropthepuckeh - Feb 9, 2012 at 1:06 AM

Without a doubt move on brother! 82 games makes a regular season and teams lose a bunch….have to love how many beat downs got issued tonight though right? Wow they got pummeled! Pretty sure Buff will now be playing that “tough”, if they are playing, in the playoffs….

    • drewsylvania - Feb 9, 2012 at 1:40 PM

If you think “every post” is about “6 cups”, then you haven’t been reading many of them.

      • donfocker89 - Feb 9, 2012 at 6:00 PM

No I dont read many of them because nothing changes. People call the Bruins “cheap” and then Bruins fans respond with disagreeing and saying they’re the ones with the cup last year. I agree you have every right to flaunt last year until a new team gets crowned. But I hear responses of yours all the time. Everytime I talk smack about football I hear in retaliation “4 superbowl losses, huh?” So like I said, enough about the past just move on cuz your upset with the outcome of the game. Fact is, your team got shutout by 14th place. Buffalo will take this day and you will have chances for redemption. Untill then keep your mouth shut.

      • drewsylvania - Feb 9, 2012 at 7:34 PM

        You’re an idiot.

  12. noulp - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:33 AM

Mike Milbury called out Kaleta because, according to Mike, accepting a fight with Milan Lucic while wearing a visor makes you despicable. Milbury, of course, doesn’t even wear a helmet when he beats on children and fans.

    • xxshookonexx - Feb 9, 2012 at 7:46 AM

      I chuckled

    • elvispocomo - Feb 9, 2012 at 12:59 PM

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that Mike Milbury is an idiot.

    • drewsylvania - Feb 9, 2012 at 1:41 PM

Didn’t beat on children. The rest I agree with.
