Ho hum, Sam Gagner broke one of Wayne Gretzky’s team records

Feb 5, 2012, 3:12 PM EDT

Sam Gagner AP

Sam Gagner‘s last couple of games have been pretty outstanding. Netting eight points in two periods against the Blackhawks and then three points in the first period against Detroit makes for quite the offensive explosion.

Funny thing is, Gagner did something that not even Wayne Gretzky did during his time in Edmonton. Gagner broke a team record for most consecutive points by getting in on 11 straight goals. Gretzky held the old record of factoring in on ten straight goals, a mark Gagner broke after scoring his second goal of the game in the first period last night.

Gagner’s eight point outburst had everyone thinking back to the days of Gretzky in Edmonton, but actually breaking a scoring mark set by The Great One? That’s impressive.

His dad was a better player

I’m not old enough to remember the North Stars, but it’s hard to compare careers, especially when his son is only 22 and is already in his 5th full season. He is expected to be a lot better and he obviously has the potential. His father was probably a lot more consistent than his son.

I jumped and took him in my fantasy league, but here’s why:

-He’s an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, meaning he might get traded to be a top 6 on a contender.
-Even if he stays with the Oilers, he’s going to get top 6 minutes with some of the best young players in the game.
-At 22, he might be just scratching his potential, this could be the confidence he needed to put it all together.
-I’m in first place, have a ridiculous core of players, and can afford to take risks on guys like this (And an injured Sid Crosby/Mikko Koivu.)
