Zac Rinaldo gets fined Saturday…twice

Feb 4, 2012, 10:28 PM EDT

Zac Rinaldo had a costly day on Saturday. Rinaldo was fined a total of $5,000 for two separate incidents during Philadelphia’s 6-4 loss to New Jersey. The first incident came when Rinaldo delievered a late hit to Jacob Josefson in the second period. Rinaldo later slew footed Zach Parise in the third period, which led to Ilya Kovalchuk dropping the gloves and earning his first Gordie Howe hat trick.

You can see Rinaldo’s slew footing and the brawl that resulted from it below:

The NHL can only fine a player up to a maximum of $2,500 per incident and the money is put in the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Rinaldo should have been suspended a game for the slew foot.

Too bad it was Schenn who got punched out instead of Rinaldo.

so instead of suspending this clown to send a message, shanny just fined him twice. the inconsistencies in the discipline department border on the comical, and i sure hope will be part of the new CBA. if they want to fine people, fine them $20k to get the message across. if the fine doesnt do the trick start with a scale for suspensions, 5 games for first offense, 10 for next, and just double it from there.

Don’t think a slew foot is a suspendable play or else I am sure he would have been.

Also, so much more respect for Kovalchuk after that fight, you can tell he is finally starting to care about his team along with himself.

Maybe if the officials knew how to call a game correctly none of this would have ever happened.
