Ilya Kovalchuk had a Gordie Howe hat trick

Feb 4, 2012, 4:07 PM EDT

Ilya Kovalchuk has been having a monster season for the Devils but getting a Gordie Howe hat trick? That would seem pretty unlikely… Unless you’re the Philadelphia Flyers trying to hold him down today.

Kovalchuk scored a goal and added two assists in the Devils’ 6-4 win over the Flyers and Kovalchuk even played the role of enforcer when Brayden Schenn came calling. Kovalchuk and Schenn squared off and sure enough, Kovalchuk can handle his business.

Who knew that Ilya Kovalchuk would be the guy to score goals and throw fists for the Devils? Perhaps the next 13 years in New Jersey won’t be so bad.

For the record, the fight was the ninth of Kovalchuk’s career according to Hockey Fights and it’s the 14th Gordie Howe hat trick overall this season and the first of Kovalchuk’s career.

Only 47 pts in 44 games, 3 SHG, leads all forwards in avg TOI (by a huge margin), and fights for his teammates — such a one dimensional, lazy, selfish player…

And currently a -9 +/- rating that does not include being on the ice for most of the teams, I believe 13 short handed goals allowed? I would tend to say that he is a little too one dimensional- all offensive minded and not enough defensive minded.

Love the Devil articles Mr. Yerdon! They seem to be coming more often but that must come with winning and with Kovy and Elias playing like this, the Eastern Conference better start getting use to it!

Well the goal was BS. That was a penalty. But Schenn probably shouldn’t fight he got his butt kicked.

This all started because Zac Rinaldo pulled an absolute bush league moved and slew-footed Parise. Flyers were playing like scumbags the entire day what with Hartnell punching Clarkson in the back of the head and Coburn with his blatant late hits. Admittedly, the short-handed goal was started by a penalty, but the refs missed blatant calls going both ways.

As a Devils fan it’s great to see the highest paid guy on the team stick up for his captain. The team is definitely getting hot at the right time what with Pittsburgh tomorrow and then the Rangers in the Garden on Tuesday.

Nobody cares about the Devils and their failing revenues prove it. Schenn should not fight…not his game. Rinaldo should have fought and he would have kicked the commie’s ass -did not need to embarrass Schenn. Sestito should have cracked Kolvasucks -that is his job. Flyers need to get some mean physical people on the D-Line or this season will come to an abrupt close.

Holmgren should call the Leafs and get Aulie and trade Carle and pick up another tough d-man with a nasty attitude. Get that done and the Flyers are in the finals.

Oh, I almost forgot about the devils….wait….wait…there! I’m on the toilet and I just put the entire team where it belongs.
