A quick look at Smyths numbers might look pretty good, especially playing for the Oilers. However looking just a little deeper and things don't look as swell. Smyth has just one goal and one assist in the last ten games, and both of those were in the same game. As eggserino points out, that could be a sign that Smyth, at 35, might be running out of gas. At the very least, its a sign that hes in a huge funk compared to the first half of the seasons.

Given that the Rangers might be primed for a deep playoff drive... would it really be a good idea to take on a guy who might not have the gas for such a run? If the Rangers are going to find the cap space for a $6.5 million contract.... I'm willing to bet there will be far better options out there that will be better suited to help the Rangers win the cup.

Certainly would help snipers like Gaborik to have a net-crashing presence like his. A guy who's so absurdly proficient at screens and deflections would make life very unpleasant for opposing goalies, especially on the power play. He'd probably solve quite a few problems for them.
