The Pittsburgh Penguins have locked up one of the best names in the NHL for two more seasons.

Today the team announced that center Joe Vitale has signed through 2013-14. His cap hit will be $550,000.

Vitale, who’s described in the news release as “one of the Penguins’ most versatile performers,” has 10 points in 44 games.

Joe Vitale.

Great name.

Here we see Vitale fighting Boston’s Gregory Campbell while Bruins announcer Jack Edwards displays his trademark objectivity.

Vitale is a good player – gritty, good all over the ice, and provides energy. Though with this signing, and the Penguins picking up Cal O’Reilly, one has to wonder what this might mean for Dustin Jeffery’s future.

Also, Jack Edwards… geez. It’d be fun to hear him and his Penguin counterpart Paul Steigerwald have a homer battle on the air during a game.

pens had a lot of centers in their camp this year and he earned every bit of this roster spot and extension. good to see, i was a little worried when we got rid of letestu and then staal, crosby, malkin had injuries but vitale has been the model of consistency and grit we need on the 3rd or 4th line. jeffrey has had one good game this year on the score sheet but hasnt been a liability either though so who knows. he is listed as a winger so i dont know if the vitale signing in the middle poses a threat to his tenure in pittsburgh just yet

True, they did sign Letestu to an extension and then trade him… so if Jeffrey picks up his game it may not mean much. That said, moving him to the wing at a time when two of your big three centers are hurt – and then signing Cal O’Reilly – might be a subtle signal to him (and perhaps a few other guys) that it’s time to start netting some points. They’ve been looking at him to provide some offense here and there, but he hasn’t provided any.

But not to take away from Vitale – he’s the type of role player you need to go deep in the playoffs.

Another terrific move by GMRS. The greatest GM in the game and sports in general. Every other team wishes they could have Shero. Billy Beane can eat it.
