Like Detroit, the Avs' glory squad was built around a core of absurdly talented veterans. Unlike Detroit, Colorado didn't really succeed at injecting youth into the roster at a sufficient rate to keep the team competitive over time, and they don't enjoy basically unlimited funding as one of the richest teams in the NHL. If their AHL system was better, they probably wouldn't be in quite so poor a situation, but their internal monetary limits really hamper things regardless.

I stand corrected. I completely forgot about erik cole as well. It is strange for me to watch the avalanche struggle so much in the past few years. I grew up watching that powerhouse team led by sakic, roy, forsberg, foote, blake, and so many more clober vancouver all the time.

If you're investing that kind of money, try to get someone who earns a little more of it. Statsny's good, but he isn't worth his cap hit. You'd be better-served trying to buy Parise or trade for Getzlaf.

I do agree that they've made horrible moves in the last year but Varlamov was for a first and a second, not two firsts. They also acquired a first in the Stewart trade which I guess made that first rounder expendable in their minds. To answer your question, yes that has happened many times. In fact there's rules to limit how quickly a player can be moved back to his former team because in the days of the waiver draft Bobby Clarke used to trade guys away and then re-acquire them after the waiver draft to avoid losing them via waivers. That rule cost Dean McCammond half a season not too long ago when Calgary re-acquired him. More recently Erik Cole was traded from Carolina to Edmonton on March 4th, 2008, then back to Carolina on March 4th, 2009.

Wow, some brutal decisions by the avalanche in the past year...Shattenkirk and stewart for Johnson and two first rounders for varlarmov. Has a player ever been traded away then re-aquired a year a later?
