After 6-0 loss, Columbus coach accuses San Jose of…water-bottle squirting

Feb 1, 2012, 3:26 PM EDT

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what caused the bad blood in last night’s Sharks-Blue Jackets tilt, a game that featured nearly 100 penalty minutes.

It could’ve been the blowout factor (San Jose won 6-0), or the dirty hit factor (Jared Boll delivered a headshot to Joe Thornton), or the overall frustration factor (the Blue Jackets are terrible)…

Or, as Columbus coach Todd Richards suggested, maybe it was THE WATER-BOTTLE FACTOR.

“As [Derek] Dorsett is coming down the ice, you can see a water bottle squirted on him from San Jose’s bench,” Richards told CSN Bay Area of a third-period fight between Dorsett and Colin White. “I don’t know if that’s what set him off, but as he’s carrying the puck up the ice, that happens.

“Things erupt a little bit then and you get some emotion.”

Here’s video of what we assume to be the alleged incident. There’s a really good close-up at the 54 second mark, though no clear-cut evidence of any squirting.

Interesting to note that, at the 28 second mark, Dorsett emerges from the fight gesturing at the Sharks bench. Could it be in response to the alleged squirt?

Whatever the case, the Blue Jackets will likely want to put this incident behind them and focus on their next opponent — the Los Angeles Kings. If any Kings end up squirting water from the bench, at least the Jackets will know it’s accidental:

The last thing players on the CBJ should be worried about is water bottles. How about maybe putting a respectable effort on the ice.

People need to shut up and just play hockey. The story about the Habs complaining didn’t surprise me because it’s the Habs, but it seems there’s a lot more whining in hockey than there used to be.

How glad were you that you could type this sentence and make it fit into a hockey context?

Took everything in my power not to write “that’s what she said.”

Right at 57 mark you can clearly see that he does get squirted from the middle of the bench.

I dunno…I’ve watched the video several times and I just can’t “clearly” see anything definitive.

Turn on 720p and put it on full screen. He even flinches when he gets hit.

He did get squirted!!! If you watch the video full screen you can see what I believe to be Joe Thornton reach for a water bottle and then squirt it at Dorsett as he goes by!

I agree. You can clearly see even in the small player that someone squirts a water bottle in Dorsett’s direction. I had to watch it several times in 720p before I was sure that it was Thornton who did the squirting.

As a Sharks fan I find that pretty disappointing. Go out there and break his face if you’re that upset with him, don’t pull that bush league crap.

Kinda like Joe repeatedly putting his finger in Henrik’s face when they were talking to the refs recently? Or when he dropped like his legs had been chopped off from a minor slash?

I don’t see anything that looks like water being squirted but it’s hardly the worst thing he’s done even if he did (not saying he’s the only one ever to do so either).

      • jrod691 - Feb 1, 2012 at 7:39 PM

        a) I don’t understand how anyone can’t see the water being squirted in that video.

        b) Ya that dive really made me lose some respect for Joe.

NHL should be proud that it’s given the All Star game to such a well run and competitive franchise. Thanks, Garry! Now, all the season tickets fans will buy their tickets next season so they can get All Star tickets and we can look forward to the rematch where San Jose will beat CBJ 9-0 and a fight will break out because someone on the Sharks bench looked at someone on the Columbus “funny”.
