Penguins review Crosby medical tests: “No evidence of a past or present neck fracture”

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that an independent review of Sidney Crosby‘s medical tests found no evidence of a past or present neck fracture, essentially refuting claims Crosby had cracked his C1 and C2 vertebrae.

From the Penguins website:

An independent specialist contacted to review recent medical tests taken on Sidney Crosby found no evidence of a past or present neck fracture but verified that Crosby is suffering from a soft-tissue injury of the neck, that could be causing neurological symptoms.

Dr. Alexander Vaccaro is a spinal trauma expert at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and co-director of the Spinal Cord Center at Thomas Jefferson University. He is past president of the American Spinal Injury Association.

Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, along with Penguins owner Mario Lemieux and CEO David Morehouse traveled Monday morning to Philadelphia, where Vaccaro reviewed a CAT Scan and MRI taken last week by Dr. Robert S. Bray in Los Angeles. Bray diagnosed a neck injury.

Bray has treated Crosby with an injection to alleviate swelling in the C1-2 joint of the neck and will be overseeing his progression with therapists.

Doctors say the symptoms of a soft-tissue neck injury are similar to concussion symptoms.

Vaccaro, Bray and UPMC doctors all agree that Crosby is safe, the injury is treatable, and he will return to action when he is symptom-free.

Some questions that still need answering:

— Did Penguins team doctors still miss/misdiagnose the soft-tissue injury?

— What findings led to the fractured vertebrae diagnosis?

— What finding led to dismissing the fractured vertebrae diagnosis?

— Wait…was there even a fractured vertebrae diagnosis?

There’s also going to be plenty of questions asked of Bray, who declared Crosby’s neck injury “healed” — especially given today’s release, which says Crosby is still suffering from a neck injury.

who knows and frankly at this point who cares (no offense Mike). penguins trying to save face or a doctor trying to draw attention to himself and his practice by creating a diagnosis that cant be proven or disproven? either way this will be my last crosby comment until he is declared eligible to play, i’ve about had it.

Well Mike another 5star post here on!!! I for one continue to have a thirst for knowledge in the subject of this superior human specimen. I believe alot of the confusion came when the xray showed that soupcan actually has the legs of a purebred racehorse. Not only is he changing hockey, but he know manages to change modern science

Geez, I hope I can get a competent spine guy somewhere if I ever need it…

As much as this Crosby Watch, and Spine Watch is getting pretty annoying for those of us who don’t really like Crosby…. it is scary to think that a serious injury (even if its actually not a neck fracture) could be missed for over a year. After all, these teams have a large medical staff and we can only assume the Pens have had Crosby checked out by the top doctors in the country. Yet this problem, what ever it is, still went un-detected? Thats not cool.

    Gamesmanship ?

The renewal of Crosby’s contract is now fast approaching on the horizon. Therefore one is compelled to at least “consider” the possibility that this entire business is nothing more than a calculated charade on Crosby’s part ? Yes that may sound “ludicrous” and completely “inconsistent” with the carefully crafted image and brand of the man. But how are we to know any better, than to not consider this possibility ? Nobody really knows what Crosby’s mind is thinking or what is true motives are ? … just as we don’t really know what’s truly going on in the minds of the Penguin’s management ? If he was just in year 2 or 3 of a “Luongo-styled” contract for 12 years, then I wouldn’t be harboring such thoughts for a second. But the fact is, that negotiations are looming on the horizon and therefore I’m now starting to “definitely” smell something here ? … don’t you guys agree ?

At this point STFU about Crosby. I don’t care, the league doesn’t care, and fans of the sport don’t care. He has become the drama queen of the NHL and I don’t even believe he personally wants it to be that way. All the false claims and stupid progress reports take away from the excellent hockey being played on a nightly basis. How does a specialist find an injury, then the terrible doctors in Pittsburgh find nothing, yet he holds a press conference about the findings in California. Stop. Just stop. Report the great battles going on every night, the great games, the plays and setups. This has gotten too far and as a life long NHL fan and hockey player, I can say nothing has tarnished the league like the ideological reporting done on Crosby. There is so much great hockey going on that is ignored by the sore that has become Penguins hockey and all that is Crosby. If he is a true “embassador of the league” he would agree with this. I wish him nothing but a speedy recovery and to once again view him showcasing his skill set, but damn, SHUT UP about all the drama around his injury and stop turning this onto a scandal or NFL calibre story. I’m upset over this and I don’t want it to reflect or disrespect the great work Pittsburgh, a team I greatly dislike, has done without its star, but I can’t ignore that coverage of his everlasting injury has taken away from coverage of some of the greatest hockey ever played in the history of the league. The NHL is at its pinnacle as far as skilled forwards, defense, and GOALTENDING go. I just feel all the high school drama detracts from all the great play going on. That is all.

Haha, what are you, twelve? No…seventeen and you’re posting from your phone while you sit in class. I would love to have him on my team because I know what he can contribute. I will decline your offer because unlike you, I wouldn’t want to be in a situation with a man on my junk…but I guess Crysby fans will take whatever they can get. You’re late for class, boss.
