NHL Power Rankings: Not ours, someone else’s

Jan 30, 2012, 4:39 PM EDT

We’ve discussed doing NHL power rankings on PHT, but they take a lot of work, so every once in a while we’ll link to someone else’s power rankings and comment on those instead.

Today, we’re discussing Pat Leonard’s rankings at NYDailyNews.com:

A few thoughts:

—-Based on recent play, Nashville (9-1-0 in last 10 games) deserves to be in the No. 3 spot. Yes, even ahead of Boston and Vancouver. The Bruins have lost four of their last seven and the Canucks haven’t been particularly impressive since beating the B’s in that barnburner three weeks ago.

—-No real issue with the Rangers on top. If Detroit had beaten Montreal in its last game before the All-Star break for an eighth straight win (instead of getting blown out, 7-2), I’d have put the Red Wings first.

—-Ottawa at No. 9 is a real stretch. The Sens went into the All-Star break on a three-game losing streak. They’re also the only team in the NHL that’s played 52 games, so their 11th place in the overall standings is slightly deceiving.

—-The Kings at No. 18 is extremely unfair. In their last 18 games, they’ve only lost twice in regulation.

—-The Ducks are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. I’d say they’re playing better than just Carolina and Edmonton.

—-Buffalo should be lower than No. 24, at least below the Ducks and Islanders. The Sabres have one regulation win in their last 10, a stretch that’s seen them score just 15 goals. And it’s not just their last 10 games — they’ve been awful since mid-December.

—-The Oilers are better than one team, and one team only.

I know pittsburghpoonslayer is gonna rip me a new one for this but how are the Penguins ahead of the Flyers. Flyers have more points, less games played, and have been pretty good lately. Some tough losses but that happens to every team. I understand the Pens are on a 5 game winning streak but that was after 6 straight losses! So they sorta cancel out.

And Nashville is better than Ottawa. Look at the # of games Ottawa has played already.

My apologies. 7 game winning streak. Still, the Flyers have been and are the the better team.

You’re right…flyers have been better than the pens. However, I’ll be at the garden on sunday to watch my boys hand philly another loss! I’m curious to see the trades that will go down among the top teams in the east (nyr, bos, philly)

Um Boston has 3 games in hand over Nashville along with a a plus +69 Goal differential compared to Nashville’s unimpressive +13.

Nashville might be 10-2 in January but here is who they beat:

CBJ x2 Colorado x 2 Calgary Carolina and the Islanders. The only impressive wins were against Chicago x2 and Philly both teams with unpredictable goaltending.

I could go on but the Bruins schedule in January was brutal. Basically in a 7 game series would Nashville or the Bruins win? Honestly Nashville’s top forward would be on Boston’s 3rd line.

I agree, but I wouldn’t dismiss Nashville. They play a completely different style of play. It should look familiar… because the Bruins used to play it not that long ago…

This has nothing to do with talent level and everything to do with team play. Nashville deserves top ten recognition.

You guys seemed to have done a lot of work for not having released your own power rankings.

Have any of you suffered through a Jackets game? Columbus is ranked too high. I can think of numerous AHL, college, and a few select High Schools that could take a seven game series from Columbus. But, hey, they got the All Star game, so why change anything?
