@pittsburghmoderns – That’s an excellent point about the “sports/industrial” complex having far too much power these days. In a sense, they along with the banking, media and pharmaceutical industries constitute a modern-day Spanish Inquisition. The level of both “conscious and subliminal” brainwashing which these industries are subjecting the masses to today, is completely off the charts in terms of precedence and it’s very much consistent with what George Orwell predicted in his book 1984.

It’s irrelevant where the clinching game was held, because the Pens won crucial games at home during those Finals, and all during the playoffs. Including the playoffs, the home fans saw those Cup winners roughly 50 times each season.

This a travesty and civic vandalism. The sports industrial complex has too much power over our communities and politicians. This building could have been easy reused (I speak as an architect)…In fact we had a plan that the Pens refused to listen to: http://www.reusetheigloo.org

Actually, sorry to snow on your parade, but whilst calling the Igloo home, by whatever corporate name, the Pens won Cups in Minnesota, Chicago and Detroit.

My bad, three Cups won in the Igloo. That’s a high total when you consider the Rangers and Chicago have won only one more Cup, and they had a roughly 40 year head start as a franchise. Pens trail Detroit by only one Cup and lead Toronto 3-0 since 1967-68.

Different than the TRS implosion, because that stadium housed several world champions across two sports. Actually, not a bad place to watch a game, but time marches on. Still, the Civic Arena had an impressive run, and served the Pens well. The great players, two Cup champions, and moments will live on forever. Most other NHL franchises like the Sharks, Blues, Kings, Sabres, Capitals, Canucks, etc. etc. can only dream about their arenas housing that type of success.

not as traumatic for me as three river stadium’s destruction was. somewhere Jean Claude Van Dam is crying. his shining moment had to be when he put those pads on in the igloo and for the first time had people actually cheer a performance from him.

Thank goodness this place is getting torn down. Awesome from the outside, but it was a terrible venue for hockey as it was not the reason it was built and had the worst acoustics for a place specifically built for the Pittsburgh CLO. The only team to win a Cup there was Detroit, Good riddance, Consol is far superior.
