Tim Thomas has always been a “lone wolf”

Jan 24, 2012, 8:35 AM EDT

Tim Thomas sure found a way to push everyone’s buttons yesterday, but standing up for himself and what he believes in is nothing new.

Thomas deciding not to join the rest of his Bruins teammates at the White House for the team’s visit with President Barack Obama turned out to be Thomas’ way of protesting against the government.

As Joe Haggerty of shared in his must-read column on Thomas, however, doing things his own way is the way Thomas has always done things in his career.

He’s often looked at as a “Lone Wolf” that doesn’t have very much in common with his teammates. Thomas often goes his own way throughout the season, but that’s not unusual for a goaltender. It’s also not to indict him as a divisive influence or a problem because he’s neither of those things.

With that aside, Haggerty says Thomas could’ve used a bit more tact this time around.

But here’s one suggestion: why not announce Thomas’ intentions prior to the visit in order to defuse the situation and take the heat out of it on Monday afternoon. Thomas is wonderful at stopping pucks in tense situations and he’s one of the most humble athletes you’ll ever come across.

But he’s not a brilliant PR strategist and there seems to have been no notion of getting out ahead of the train wreck that steamed into the East Wing of the White House Monday afternoon.

Whether you’re in agreement with Thomas’ stand here or not, he’s well within his rights and reasons for not wanting to meet the President, but if nothing else, he sure could’ve used a little coaching on this one. How Thomas handles the press this weekend in Ottawa at the All-Star Game could prove to be another circus of its own.

enough of about this joke, lets talk about how great fluery and the penguins are some more.

Lets not enough about the sh#tburg pens and how much you miss the good old days and ur pretty boy crosby. GET OVER IT

  2. jamesmakesurmomneil - Jan 24, 2012 at 8:49 AM

What a disgrace this guy is. He should be cut for these actions. Sidney Crosby would never disgrase his team with selfish moves like this. Crosby is a better leader and American than Thomas will ever be. Kick this tree hugger out of the NHL and off our olympic team

    • clevonj - Jan 24, 2012 at 9:15 AM

jamesmakes etc… you are the stupid for one thing, America is a free country so he should be allowed to make a choice of not attending the White House. Secondly Crosby is Canadian you dumb@$s. Third, there is nothing worse than someone who knows nothing about sports, tries to comment about them. Go sit in a park somewhere and protest about your free handouts, you my friend are the tree hugging freeloader. Do you have a full-time job? I do, and Tim Thomas, you are a great American goalie and I hope you represent the USA in the next Winter Olympics.

      • clevonj - Jan 24, 2012 at 9:16 AM

sorry, some grammatical errors in the beginning so feel free to point it out.

Nicely Done… Just another toolbag Penguins fan that thinks he and his favorite bandwagon team are hot shit… Get a life, homo

      • howiehandles - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:27 PM

It kills me that there are still so many lemmings in this country, after what the politicians have dragged this country through for the past decade. Thomas is my new favorite goalie!

What the sheep need to understand is, this country was built on challenging the status quo, or at least questioning it. One can love their country and still question those in charge.

    • frankvzappa - Jan 24, 2012 at 9:33 AM

better American? sounds like terminology used in Germany in the 1930s…the only bad Americans are those who don’t believe in free speech anymore because they have been convinced by fascists that giving away liberty is the most American thing they can do…

“I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

      • elvispocomo - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:02 PM

Too bad he isn’t really saying anything. He just took his ball and went home – or rather, stayed home.

        “Government’s bad, mmkay?”

      • howiehandles - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:30 PM

Seems rather clear cut to me. He’s not blaming either side, but actually both sides.

“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT”

It’s America, he can do what he wants and he is a valuable commodity which gives him more leverage.

  4. timmyfan1997 - Jan 24, 2012 at 9:05 AM

What I think Thomas did was rite he is more American. Than stupid crosby saying. He is. More American is a. Disgrace to. This country

  5. timmyfan1997 - Jan 24, 2012 at 9:21 AM

See some ones agree what he did was rite so get a life

  6. raccy1 - Jan 24, 2012 at 9:32 AM

No one disputes Timmy Boy’s right to do what he did. The problem is that he made a stupid decision.
People are always criticized for stupid decisions and they have to live with the consequences.
You just do not turn down an invitation to the White House. This “lone wolf” crap doesn’t fly. He proved himself to be a jerk.
This whole thing has nothing to do with his “rights”. It has to do with his being an American and doing the right thing.
Thomas should ask to leave Boston. He does not belong on this great team.

  7. pittsburghpoonslayer - Jan 24, 2012 at 10:01 AM

tim thomas is a dirty commie, he should be deported for not respecting the usa. remember when crosby met with the president in 09. yea hes more american that tim “the commie” thomas will ever be. blow it out your holes all you anti-americans.

    • howiehandles - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:32 PM

Considering he’s a Canadian, not sure how that makes him more American. Is it because of the concussions?

  8. clarenceoveur - Jan 24, 2012 at 10:02 AM

Always find it ironic when someone uses his right of free speech to bemoan his lack of freedom. But whatever, I agree with the writer’s take. Timmy can do what he wants, but the manner in which he did it made his stand the entire story and is incredibly selfish and unfair to his teammates.

  9. jamesmakesurmomneil - Jan 24, 2012 at 10:39 AM

ClevonJ- you are typical redneck…figures you would want a racist goaltender to represent our great country. While I may be unemployed, at least I respect all people no matter what color they are. In my opinion Thomas needs disiplined, and so do you.

    • howiehandles - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:39 PM

What about his comment infers racism? Comprehension is a tricky b***h, isn’t it?

  10. iluvwikileaks - Jan 24, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Hey, Tim?! Anytime you want to fight me, let me know. I’ll take you on, jack@$$.

    • foodforthesoul28 - Jan 24, 2012 at 3:18 PM

And then you will answer to Shawn Thornton, Milan Lucic and the rest of the team. Go back to where ever you are from!

  11. bostonsfullofrats - Jan 24, 2012 at 10:51 AM

its always the same old story.. a bruin being suspended, crying about an elbow or this shit. suck it up you bunch of
    pussies and fuckin move on.

  12. iluvwikileaks - Jan 24, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Yep…I know somebody that knows Tim. He is a prick.

  13. firemarshal1 - Jan 24, 2012 at 11:05 AM

Tim Thomas is a disgrace to our country. Mr. Thomas may not agree with the President’s political views, but he’s still our elected official. Respect the Office of the Presidency, the leader of the free of the world. Tim Thomas showed no respect to our country. Karma, what goes around comes around. Maybe, as fans, we should not attend and honor his next awards ceremony, i.e. MVP award. Poor taste.

  14. pittsburghpoonslayer - Jan 24, 2012 at 11:14 AM

bmoorfagnuts, the pens are an amazing sports franchise that everyone in the world should worship. there is no other team in the world that can compare to the penguins franchise. you are just a doosher who probably roots for filthadelphia and the ginger hartnell. stop being a commie racist like tim thomas and join the movement of the greatest franchise in the world the pittsburgh penguins!

    • ravenscaps48 - Jan 24, 2012 at 12:52 PM

You mean the Greatest Franchise in the World that almost relocated 8 years ago because of how shitty they were doing? That Greatest Franchise in the World?

      • ravenscaps48 - Jan 24, 2012 at 12:58 PM

I think the New York Yankees have something to say about that…And that’s coming from a kid who grew up hating that damn team

      • letangshair - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:57 PM

it sure isn’t the ravens. stick to losing in the playoffs.

    • howiehandles - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:36 PM

The team that almost graced Kansas City with hockey? The team that threatened to leave because they were LAST in attendance prior to Mario bailing them out?

    • howiehandles - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:37 PM

And by your handle, you’re obviously about 14, and the closest you’ve ever been is opening the door while your sister was having a bm.

    • elvispocomo - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:09 PM

Why the hell would the Canadiens want him?! The one thing they do have going for them is Price so they don’t need to trade for a highly paid lone wolf that won’t show up if he thinks it vaguely is against something he maybe believes in.

  24. iluvwikileaks - Jan 24, 2012 at 12:54 PM

Too late Timmy. You obviously are too chicken shit to fight. I’ve got better things to do.

    Oh, yeah…

    GO PENS!!

  25. richie500 - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:07 PM

Tim Thomas is one of those DBAG right wingers that claims he loves America and then turns around and slaps America in the face by not showing up for the honor of going to the White House, ( The American People’s House) regardless of what party is in office!!
How out of touch with what America is can you be!
He’s a loser and I don’t want him to represent ALL Americans at the Olympics!

    • foodforthesoul28 - Jan 24, 2012 at 3:35 PM

How is he slapping America in the face? If your eyes have been open this government is trying to take away all our rights and control everything. Tim Thomas said he does not like the way this man is doing his job. He obviously has different views than the President and does not like the way the government is doing things. He has that right to not go somewhere in which he does not agree with the way things are being done. I will relate it to this situation. Say you are against abortion (please don’t let this become a debate about abortion this is only an example) and you are invited to a fundraiser dinner at Planned Parenthood. Would I go? No. Why? Because I don’t agree with the way things are being done. I understand going to the White House and abortion are not related but the concept of the premises are related. Therefore, To call Thomas a “DBAG who slaps America in the face” is such a terrible argument in which your logic does not follow. Just because Thomas Chooses not to go to somewhere that has different beliefs does not make him a DBAG. I could say the exact same about you if you are Atheist and was invited to a Christian event for an honor and turned it down. People, please think before you speak!

  26. eagles512 - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:42 PM

A lot of people ripping Thomas would be backing him if he did it to Bush. Not all but a lot.

    • The Baseball Gods - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:56 PM

I completely disagree. I think Bush was a terrible President, but if I was invited to the White House to meet him and shake his hand I would have without thinking twice.

      • foodforthesoul28 - Jan 25, 2012 at 5:35 PM

So you’re calling yourself a Hypocrite? If I had opposing views with someone and I was invited to meet with them I would turn it down because I stand up for my rights and beliefs. Not trying to be mean. :) Just the argument…

  27. kiopta1 - Jan 24, 2012 at 1:58 PM

There is a level of respect, honor, and integrity that should be present in these situations and Tim didn’t live up to that. I did not agree with Pres. Bush on many things and would not vote for him. However, I did serve under him in the army for most of his presidency and would never ignore an invitation…especially if doing so would risk the embarrassment of the office, my unit, or the army. There is just a level of respect and honor that far too many have kicked to the wayside and that hurts this nation more than reckless statement making.

  29. shutyourfivehole - Jan 24, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Hey, moron demoncrat politician, if you want Thomas to “stick to hockey” then stop expecting hockey players to mindlessly parade in front of the press with a guy that knows nothing about hockey and doesn’t give a rip about it other than to use it for publicity. And probably thinks they’re all racist anyway. Screw obama.

  30. charlutes - Jan 24, 2012 at 4:38 PM

To give you an idea of the level of sophistication Thomas has when it comes to politics, the person he would most like to have dinner with is Glenn Beck!!!

  34. drewsylvania - Jan 25, 2012 at 12:35 AM

Read all the posts, and…wow. Racist? Asshole? Prick? Should be cut? Anti-American?

Most of you are among the stupidest people on earth.

    Don’t procreate. Please.
