Ovechkin, Michalek will hear from NHL on Monday

Jan 22, 2012, 11:50 PM EST

Maybe some of the dislike started with all the media hype, but there should be little doubt that the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals have taken the hate from there. The NHL will determine if two manifestations of that distaste will result in suspensions on Monday.

Alex Ovechkin will discuss this hit on Zbynek Michalek in the afternoon:

Michalek might already be in a bad mood by the time that decision comes, however, as he’ll hear from the NHL for his check on Matt Hendricks in the morning.

I think that Ovechkin will probably get suspended for the hit, but it wouldn’t shock me if he doesn’t. But the one thing I don’t understand is how a player like Ovechkin, who’s been involved in a lot of questionable hits, and has been suspended a handful of times, only has like two fights in his career. I’m shocked that other players haven’t tried to hold him accountable when he crosses the line.

      Three things..

      1. Really not all that many questionable hits for Ovechkin and none recently.

      2. There would be instant retaliation if kind of goon tried to ‘hold him accountable’.

      3. He may not fight much but he is pretty big and pretty violent, Im not sure (outside of a few heavyweights) who exactly wants to find out how well he can fight.

        *any* kind

He’d have to fight another star for the other players to let it go (ala Lecavalier v Iginla in cup final). Your right a goon would trying to take on Ovechkin would bring the rest of the team into the scrum.

Something tells me Ovechkin’s hit would’ve been swept under the rug if the game wasn’t on national television.

Here’s a question. If Ovechkin gets suspended for this hit (which I believe he deserves to) — Will it include the All Star game this weekend? Or does he still get rewarded?

What would be the reward? Still going to the dog-and-pony show? Or getting a relaxing week off? He is probably hoping for the the suspension includes the ASG.
