Ference to have phone hearing over his hit on McDonagh

It’s not a big surprise, but Andrew Ference will have a hearing by phone with Brendan Shanahan for his reckless hit on New York’s Ryan McDonagh yesterday.

Ference’s phone hearing means that if he’s going to be suspended for the hit he’ll get as many as five games or could wind up just getting fined. Conventional thinking on this play, however, leans toward believing Ference will wind sitting for a couple of games for charging McDonagh from behind in overtime of yesterday’s Rangers 3-2 win over Boston.

Considering the recklessness of the play and the fact that McDonagh was apparently hurt on the play, Ference is likely looking at a short vacation. Ference himself isn’t a guy with a very checkered history which will help him out, but a play like yesterday’s hit will always get you in trouble with the league, especially these days.

The onus is on Shanahan to be consistent with disciplinary action. Haven’t seen much yet.

And for the refs to call the dangerous hits consistently. They’ve been pretty good at boarding calls, but not so much on clips, slew foots, and open-ice elbows.

Probably 3 or 4 games, shanahan needs to remain constant

Ferrence = guilty for being stupid. No malice here. He obviously wasn’t trying to put his team down a major in OT, and he seemed [stupidly] unaware of the force he was bringing to the contact after skating full-steam for 180 feet. Stupid (very) but no intention to injure. Hope McD is okay — I though he broke his neck when I saw this play live.

A message has to be sent to Ference, the Boston Bruins organization and the rest of the league: These kind of hits have got to stop. TEN GAMES minimum!

      You’re drunk again.

Please, don’t try to minimize this. Anyone who has played the game knows this was a dangerous and dirty play. Three games for sure.

Also, Ference has had several incidents in the past. He just wasn’t suspended for them. The shoulder to an unsuspecting Jeff Halperns head last year was particularily dirty. Not to mention the middle finger last year (He called it accidental).

Agree deserves 3-5 for the hit. As far as his “stuck glove” He was just telling Habs fans they were number 1.

Suspended at least 1 game as not in today’s lineup.

how do i call a middle finger to the crowd accidental? these bruins lies suck as much as there hockey..

    • drewzducks - Jan 22, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Their lies may suck but their hockey ? Reigning champs and one of top 3-4 teams again. Better get used to it.
