say what you want, but if you watch the video Shanahan says he believes Ference’s assertion of no malicious intent. An unfortunate incident, much like Pacioretty, but once again no intent, just bad timing.

This is a solid call by Shanahan. I don’t care what Boston fans try to say about this hit, or Ference’s intent… the fact is he threw a check to the back of a vulnerable player and it resulted in injury. Stupidity or ignorance is not an excuse for something like this, and while three games is on the low end of what you might expect for this hit, its def in the ball park.

The NHL has got to raise the minimum suspension for hits like these. Regardless of the offenders past, ten games has got to be the baseline from which to escalate. This type of wreckless behaviour must be eliminated from the game before someone is seriously injured or worse. The only way to do that is to make the punishment supremely impactful not just to the player but to the team that employs them. Maybe it’s time to consider removing not only the player for the length of the suspension but the roster spot.

Ference didn’t mean to run anybody……just like he didn’t finger the Habs fans….and like Lucic didn’t mean to run Miller….and like Marchand was just protecting himself…..and like Thornton fought three guys in one period….and like Pacioretty is faking his concussion……..Why doesn’t anyone believe us anymore?!
