I think alot of free agents don’t want to come to Montreal for this exact reason… they just don’t say it.

When Danny Briere was a free agent in Buffalo, everyone in Montreal thought it was a slam dunk he would sign there since he was of French ancestry. (I think he was from a few hours outside of the Quebec border though) and he wound up signing in Philly for less money.

no, they should hire the best possible coach but the coach should be able to (or make an attempt) to speak the language of the land like Cunnyworth is doing.

No reason to limit yourself to the 20%

as someone from philadelphia, i can assure you Charlie Manual’s English is questionable. just kidding (sort of). he’s a good manager. period. and that’s THE CRITERIA. the fact that the fans like you, who are trying to add additional criteria for a coach that has zero relevance, is embarrassing. and yes, you are changing the subject.

spiffy, Charlie Manuel speaks fine English. If you’re referring to Jerry Manuel, as in the Manager that at worst ran the Mets into the ground, or at best is known for an epic collapse, I HARDLY believe the Yankees would hire him.

adirondack, probably the dumbest comments i have read in a long time. no wonder the canadiens are so lousy. the inmates are running the asylum. i am pretty sure New York would want the best coach available. Charlie Manual barely speaks English and the Yankees would hire him in two seconds. and basically, you are saying that in Montreal, the coaching pool should come from 20% of the hockey population? enjoy last place for a long time.

As a Yanks fan I could care less if our Manager spoke swahili as long as he knew how to coach/manage the team. Needing a coach to speak French is very elitist. I like my coaches actions and coaching abilities to do all his talking for him… The rest is well all BS sorry to say(just MHO)

This should not be that shocking. The Canadiens are to Montreal like the Yankees are to New York or the Cowboys to Dallas.

If you can’t take the heat, glad you got out of the kitchen.

As to the language issue, while Montreal is a mix of French and English, the province is overwhelmingly French. I’m sure NYers as a whole wouldn’t be thrilled if the new manager of the Yankees could barely speak English.
