even the dirtbag matt cooke had to fight thornton after cheapshotting savard. When you make a questionable hit, I don’t care if you can fight or can’t fight. and you get challenged on the next whistle, which he did( he did not oblige which started the scrum) You have to drop the gloves to save your entire teamates from getting drilled. All he had to do was take a few punches. And your complaining that he got jumped? thats how you get dirty hits out of the game. Let the players police themselves thats the way its always been.

ps. thats pretty irresponsible to even bring the matt more incident into this. How are they even remotely similiar? challenging someone face to face or attacking someone from behind and shoving his head into the ice?

Are we applying the same laws of ‘answering the bell’ to Kane in this incident as people did to Steven Moore? Because Moore went with Matt Cooke but things still did not turn out very well….

It’s not like bad plays have suddenly appeared in the last 5 years! Ulf Samuelsson’s ? Ted Linseman? You can legislate poor plays out of hockey any more than you can remove goaltending mistakes!

This whole thing moves towards very questionable grounds in my eyes

We should expect the players will “self-police” if the officials don’t make proper calls. Players know that cheap head shots like Kane’s can’t go “unrewarded”. Violent retribution is the coin of the kingdom. Neil’s purse is full.

Kane (and many others) deserve some kind of effective punitive sanctions from the league to reinforce its efforts to stop skull bashing of all types.

A fine and a suspension, minimum.
A suspension for games that doesn’t allow a minor league call-up, or a player returning from an injury to fill the void. The team’s bench is simply ‘short-one’ while the offender is banned from the arena! That way the entire team suffers for the stupid actions of the one thug. No teams will countenance it’s players letting the entire team down like that. Nor the fans, nor the coaches, nor the GMs.

Just imagine having two or three skull bashers in the stands serving sanctions concurrently with no substitutes to cover their absence. Oops!

This situation is exactly why the instigator needs to go. “Fight or we’ll jump you anyway?” Yes, exactly. You cannot hide if you deliver a dirty hit, you will have to pay for it. This is the self-policing that hockey always had, and desperately needs again.

evander kane can hold his own in the fight department. Don’t make a questionable hit if you are not going to drop the gloves for your actions. he’s a big guy and should have dropped them.

So Karlsson looks to sit Kane down – fair enough attempt though did not connect properly

Kane looks to return favour – ugly attempt which is borderline at best (and that’s being generous!)

I’m down with the idea Kane ‘did wrong’ on the Karlsson hit. It’s not pretty and almost certainly deserved a penalty and perhaps more (personally I expect a fine or a small suspension, maybe a game or two). But I’m not particularly a fan of sending out the knuckle draggers to jump a guy at the next face-off either! What’s the message there exactly? Fight or we’ll jump you anyway?

As much as people decry the instigator rule, in situations like this I actually think it has its place.

Uh, kids? Kane knocked out Matt Cooke with one punch. Cooke’s enough of a fighter that he can hold his own, so that suggests Kane’s not half-bad himself. Not that Neil’s not an asshole, but Kane’s fighter enough that he should be expected to answer with his fists where appropriate. Nothing wrong there. He certainly didn’t have a problem with it.

kane certainly deserved what he got. that was a blatant headshot, with retribution in mind on an up and coming star of the game. he should face some supplementary discipline too as he obviously targeted the head, intentionally no less. and don’t think he can’t handle himself against neil, he’s a pretty tough kid… just ask matt cooke
